Wiping drool off his chin with the edge of his pillowcase, Phillip Carmichael stuffed his half-hard erection into his white boxers. What the hell, Carol,
he muttered to the empty side of his bed. Did you forget your key again?
The pounding continued as Phillip walked down the stairs to the front door, squinting to see through the small pane of glass at the top. Okay, I’m coming. Calm down.
Phillip Carmichael?
Yeah.
Peering through the peephole, the blue-gray hat gave way to a khaki shirt as the man on the other side stepped back. Phillip focused on the gold badge with a nameplate. Ramirez. Adrenaline dumped into his system as his mind raced through the reasons a law enforcement official would be standing on his porch.
Sorry to wake you,
a woman’s voice answered from nowhere before moving into Phillip’s line of sight. I’m afraid I may have bad news for you. There’s been a bad car accident. Your wife and son were possibly involved.
Adrenaline surged through his system, causing the blood to pound in his ears, and Phillip forced himself to focus on a single word…possibly.
They said possibly, so that meant they didn’t know. Inhaling a lung full of air, Phillip tried to keep his shit together as he opened the door.
What do you mean by ‘possibly?’ Where’s my wife and kid?
