The Crypt
Sloan Huggard and Betty Russell huddled in the back seat of Sloan’s Chevy Camaro.
Sloan, Point Guard and Captain of the Monticello High basketball team, and Betty Russell, a transfer student from Bangor, began dating soon after meeting at the annual Midnight Madness Festival in Houlton. They had little in common. Sloan, an athlete and popular member of his class, had a family background saturated with genes from Madigan, McCluskey, Putnam, Fitzpatrick, and Cary; the town’s notable ‘upper crust.’ This genetic boost, together with his natural athletic ability, contributed to his commanding stature (six foot five) and charismatic personality.
Betty. A product of foster care did not know her heritage other than what the Nun’s revealed to her. Only six months old, somebody, whose identity was never determined, left her in a cardboard box on the doorstep of Saint Michael’s Orphanage in Bangor. After being cycled through six foster homes before she was sixteen, Betty finally landed at a ‘forever home’ with the Lamberts in Houlton. Shy at first, the friendly atmosphere of a family with two boys and three girls helped her adjust to the new surroundings.
Meeting Sloan and becoming part of his circle of easy-going friends helped her develop a friendly personality. Sloan and Betty started dating. Six months after meeting, they agreed to ‘go steady.’
Like most teenagers going steady, a Lovers Lane jousting contest was a routine event after the school dance every Friday night. Sloan began the current session with his usual initial maneuver; a hug, kiss on the neck, and a light nibble on an ear.
When Betty responded to this tender gesture, he held her tighter and tried to squirm his leg between hers. It was a losing cause. Betty, blessed with the instincts of most young girls, could lock her knees together tighter than a clam closing its shell.
Sloan, undeterred, went for Plan B. He pushed his hand under her sweater, cupped her bra-covered breast while whispering in her ear, You know I love you, Betty. Just let me touch you, we don’t have to go all the way.
Betty gave Sloan a tender kiss on his nose and said, I love you too, Sloan, but you know I want to wait. Just hold me tight and keep doing what you’re doing; it’s the part I like best.
Accepting his fate after another losing battle, Sloan wrapped
