About this ebook

Since immemorial times, the human beings observed the heavens, reflecting on the great existential mysteries (origin, purpose and destiny of humanity), the meaning of life and the final reality after death, and asking different questions: Is there a God? How was the universe created? What is the origin of life and the human being? Is there a struggle between the good and the evil? Why is there so much suffering in this world? What is the meaning of human life? What comes after death? Why is there time? What is the destiny of humanity?

Obviously, the existence of the Almighty Judeo-Christian God constitutes the greatest existential mystery and also contributes significantly to glimpse the other existential enigmas.

In addition, there are two alternatives (non-existence and existence of the Creator). The first argues that the universe, the life and the human being were generated randomly, as a result of an accident, while the second is consistent with the facts and the greater probabilities that justify the Lord's intervention in the origin and evolution of the universe, the life and the human being.

The Existence of God and the Great Existential Mysteries - Rolando José Olivo

    I. INTRODUCTION

    According to the Bible, there is only One True God (Exodus 20:3, Deuteronomy 4:35, 4:39, 6:4 and 32:39, 2 Samuel 7:22 and 22:32, 1 Kings 8:60, 2 Kings 19:15, 1 Chronicles 17:20, Nehemiah 9:6, Isaiah 37:20, 43:10, 44:6, 44:8, 45:5, 45:14, 45:18, 45:21-22, 46:5 and 46:9, Zechariah 14:9, Psalm 14:1 and 18:32, Mark 12:29, John 5:44 and 17:3, Romans 3:30 and 16:27, 1 Corinthians 8:4 and 8:6, Galatians 3:20, Ephesians 4:4-6, 1 Timothy 1:17, 2:5-6 and 6:16, James 2:19, Jude 4, 24 and 25, and Revelation 1:8), incomprehensible and unattainable for human beings (Job 26:14, 36:26 and 37:23), which is an eternal (Psalm 90:2), immutable (Psalm 102:26-27), omnipotent (Job 42:2), omnipresent (Jeremiah 23:24) and omniscient (Psalm 147:5 and Romans 16:27) spirit (John 4:24), who existed since before the beginning of time (Genesis 1:1-2, Micah 5:1, John 1:1-2 and Colossians 1:17), is the Creator of the universe, the life and the human being (Genesis 1 and 2, John 1:1-3 and Colossians 1:16-17), is a Righteous Judge (Isaiah 30:18, 43:15 and 45:21, Hosea 11:9, Zephaniah 3:5, Job 34:12, Tobias 3:2, Sirach 18:2, Psalm 7:12, 9:8-9, 11:7, 35:24, 45:7, 49:8, 50:6, 51:6, 57:11, 75:8, 89:15, 92:3, 96:13, 100:5, 103:6, 111:7-8, 116:5, 119:137 and 145:17, Matthew 19:17, Mark 10:18, Luke 18:19, John 17:25, Romans 3:5, Colossians 3:25, 2 Timothy 4:8, 1 Peter 4:19, 1 John 1:5 and 1:9, and Revelation 15:4, 16:7, 18:8 and 19:1-2), whose Divine Justice is different from that of human beings (Tobias 3:5, Sirach 16:12, Psalm 19:10, 60:13, 82:1-4, 96:13, 119:142 and 145:7, John 8:15-16, Romans 2:6 and 12:19, and James 4:12), will lead the final judgment to humankind (Job 36:17 and Revelation 20:11-15), and his kingdom will be eternal (Isaiah 9:6, Daniel 7:14, Psalm 89:30, 89:37-38 and 118:22-27, Hebrews 1:8-12, and Revelation 21 and 22).

In addition, together with Jesus (the Son) and the Holy Spirit, They constitute the Christian trinity, which is confirmed by these aspects:

    a) God's expression: Let us make man in our image, after our likeness... (Genesis 1:26),

    b) the statement of the Lord: ...the man has become like one of us... (Genesis 3:22),

    c) the Father and the Son are distinguished as King of kings or Lord of lords (Deuteronomy 10:17, Psalm 110:1, 1 Timothy 6:15, and Revelation 1:5, 17:14 and 19:16),

    d) the Father and the Son are of the same nature (Deuteronomy 18:15, Luke 10:22, John 1:1, 7:29, 10:30, 10:38, 14:11, 17:21 and 17:25, Acts of the Apostles 3:22, Romans 9:5, Philippians 2:6 and 2:9, Colossians 1:15-17 and 2:9, Titus 2:13, Hebrews 1:8-9, and Revelation 1:8 and 1:17),

    e) the Holy Spirit has the same Essence as the Father and the Son (Genesis 1:2, John 14:26 and Acts of the Apostles 20:28).

Certainly, it is difficult to glimpse the existence of the Lord, which constitutes the greatest existential mystery of humanity.

Likewise, since immemorial times, the human beings observed the skies, reflecting on the great existential enigmas (origin, purpose and destiny of humanity or: Where do we come from? What are we doing here? Where are we going?), the meaning of life and the final reality after death. They also sought meaning from various unexplained natural phenomena. This gave rise to a superstitious, mystical, esoteric, spiritual and religious thought.

Although some anthropologists maintain that the first generations of human beings worshiped a Unique Creator God, most of the next ones worshiped several gods.

Even despite the rise of science and modern philosophy, since the 17th century, there are still no satisfactory answers to the great existential mysteries, which include these questions:

    1. Is there a God?: who can justify the origin, purpose and destiny of humanity.

    2. How was the universe created?: which is related to the origin of humanity.

    3. What is the origin of life and the human being?: in order to explain the origin of humanity.

    4. Is there a struggle between the good and the evil?: that can give notions about the purpose of humanity.

    5. Why is there so much suffering in this world?: which can grant ideas about the purpose of humanity.

    6. What is the meaning of human life?: this includes several questions related to the origin, purpose and destiny of humanity.

    7. What comes after death?: which can confirm if there is a destiny for humanity.

    8. Why is there time?: this is also linked to the destiny of humanity.

    9. What is the destiny of humanity?: which is related to the existence of the Creator.

In this regard, expecting to grant the best approaches to these unresolved existential enigmas, this literary work contains these main chapters:

    II. The Existence of God.

III. The Origin and Expansion of the Universe.

IV. The Origin and Evolution of Life and Human Being.

    V. The Conflict between the Good and the Evil.

    VI. The Human Suffering Problem.

VII. The Meaning of Human Life.

    VIII. Life after Death.

    IX. The Time.

    X. The Destiny of Humanity.

The Chapter II. The Existence of God is divided into these sections: a) II.1 Evidences in Favor of God’s Existence (What are these certainties?), b) II.2 Arguments against God’s Existence (What are the main approaches of skeptics and atheists?), c) II.3 The Relativization of God (How is conceived a Lord different to the Judeo-Christian one?), and d) II.4 Conclusions on the Existence of God.

The Chapter III. The Origin and Expansion of the Universe contains these subchapters: a) III.1 The Big Bang Notion (What is the Big Bang?), b) III.2 The Fundamentals of Big Bang (What is this theory based on?), c) III.3 Questionings to Big Bang (What are its failures?), and d) III.4 Conclusions on the Origin and Expansion of the Universe.

The Chapter IV. The Origin and Evolution of Life and Human Being has these parts: a) IV.1 The Evolutionary Theories (What are its foundations?), b) IV.2 Questionings to Evolutionary Theories (Why are these theories objectionable?), and c) IV.3 Conclusions on the Origin and Evolution of Life and Human Being.

The Chapter V. The Conflict between the Good and the Evil is divided
