About this ebook

It is a fact that Humanity finds itself at a crucial period of its existence. This, due to a number of reasons, among them the astrological changes brought forth by a change of cycle the planet has entered, where different cosmic influences have begun to impinge over it through the poles, following principles and laws dictated by universal magnetism.
The so called planetary “axis” has an inclination of 23,5 degrees, but this position is not fixed, but variable. The planet’s dynamic has three movements. The fist one is its orbital displacement; the second is its gyration, moving at a speed of 18.5 miles per second; and the third one is the progressive inclination of the axis, so gradual, that cannot be perceived either by the human eye or any technological contraption utilized to measure it.
Moreover, the axis gyration of the polar “axis” is not even. It has a wobbling movement such as the one of a top when it loses speed, gradually describing a circle in space. Consequently, it goes along pointing at a number of different galaxies representing a variety of energies that affect our planet and everything that lives in it. At present, the axis is leaving its position at a galaxy in Pisces and entering one in Aquarius, both signs encompassing entirely different energies. The impact of the Aquarian influence is bringing about marked changes over everything that lives on the planet, especially in that which is organic. The considerable changes being observed in human consciousness and its cultural and spiritual tendencies, both globally and individually, during the last two Centuries, will confirm it.
The object of this book is to inform and explain the ideas Theosophy offers in relation with the challenges we face in our time. The key to justify human existence resides in its only motive: the unfolding of Divine Consciousness that lies in seed inside within every human being. The text has no claim in terms of being the last word on this. All it does is to bring information concerning the laws and parameters that rule our evolutionary process, in the hope it may be useful.

    OCCULT SCIENCE

    PREFACE

When I was in my early 20s, an uncle of mine spoke to my father, a well-read man, about this book, The Secret Doctrine. He explained that it was something worth reading, dealing with the transcendental aspects of life. My father told him he wasn't interested. Still he eventually sat down with the book, or rather, the books (the Spanish translation from the two volumes original in English has six volumes). On page 20 of the first volume, he gave up and returned the books to my uncle. I don't understand a word of it..., he told him.

This has been a perennial problem in terms of effectively communicating theosophical ideas through books and other means. Other than being subjective, these ideas are also quite unfamiliar in the West, where Christianity and its dogmas have been entrenched for more than 2000 years. Yet, the last three decades have shown in our midst a growing interest in Oriental doctrines, mainly Vedanta and Buddhism. Theosophy has a strong parity with the latter, and all efforts to communicate these doctrines must be performed as simply and as clearly as possible if what we want is to have them effectively understood. It is in that spirit and with that hope that this book is written.

Brought up a Roman Catholic, in my native Chile, I got in touch with my uncle, and I told him that, opposite from my Dad, I found myself inclined to investigate esoteric philosophy books in the hope of finding answers to a number of questions which the Catholic religion didn't seem to have an answer for. I found the Bible, with its two Testaments, Old and New, confusing and hard to believe in, for example the account of Genesis.

I figured that clearly, it had to be something allegorical, symbols and metaphors which appeared as a kind of story-telling. I didn't find that properly informative, though. I wasn't getting any coherent answers to the questions in my mind. Who are we human beings? Where did we come from? Where are we going?, and, above all, is there any purpose behind our existence, which appears as something imposed on us without prior consultation?

Having had a relatively uneventful life, I still concluded that human life is not an easy venture, pain mixed with moments of pleasure being one its main characteristic. Reading history and observing human behavioral patterns - my own included - a coherent answer to those questions seemed to me essential, especially concerning the last one: whether there is in fact a purpose for our existence.

Upon bringing up the subject with family, friends and acquaintances, I found myself facing opinions that made no sense at all. No one could give me any sensible answers. Some religiously inclined friends, devotional people, came to me with the idea that the purpose of our life was to glorify God. I myself had a problem with that conclusion. Since I was told by them that God is absolute perfection, a Being totally devoid of any of the human passions and frailties which characterized human nature, I had to point out that a Being who creates a Universe and then fill it up with people so that He can be glorified by them would most certainly indicate an intolerable degree of megalomania, not to speak of cruelty given the trials we human beings are forced to endure in physical life. Such an idea would reduce God to the role of a selfish celestial tyrant of some sort, an idea that cannot be taken seriously.

Other ideas on the subject were quite vague, most of those asked admitting that they had no answers with respect to any purpose behind human existence, or any other existence for that matter. But I wasn't about to give up on my need to know, and it occurred to me that the answer could be perhaps found in the investigation of the esoteric aspects of life.

Consulting with people I trusted, older and inclined to the study of subjective notions, I was told that reading The Secret Doctrine by Helena Blavatsky was not appropriate without some previous reading of more basic material on occultism. I did ask about the origin of this latter word that suggested something mysterious, something hidden somewhere. I was told that in fact and for quite a while, esoteric information had to be hidden because of severe persecutions by the Catholic Church against those who would study such matters, which threatened them with being burned alive at the stake or worse. Since the threat became a fact for centuries against many who dared defy the injunction, the material had to be hidden, hence the word occultism which remains until our present day under the savorier term of esotericism, or esoteric philosophy. We are indeed very fortunate that at the present time we can delve into the occult without being persecuted by anyone.

Years went by until the moment came in which I felt a strong inner urge to really find what I was looking for. Migrating to the USA in 1963, I became an international functionary at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and it was through contact with some individuals at that Organization who were interested in Occultism that I entered an esoteric school, of which there were already a few in the USA, while simultaneously reading a number of recommended books on the subject. After studying in a number of different esoteric organizations, I eventually discovered Theosophy, and in it I finally found some coherent and logical answers to my questions. The result was my book Theosophy, a Philosophy for the Aquarian Age.

The book you now have in your hands is of a more generic nature, but the ideas posited in it lean considerably on what I've learned in Theosophy. I am of the opinion that a philosophy that does not have a practical effect on the daily lives of those who study it in order to ennoble it, improve it and provide a measure of peace and happiness in it, is a waste of time. My experience of more than 38 years sharing theosophical material with those who indicated an interest in it, has invariably had that desired effect on them. But I will admit Theosophy may not be the only tool in that direction.

There is plenty of mystery concerning the human psyche. Psychology is a very young science despite numerous present studies and practices, but my impression is that even among those who for one reason or another have placed themselves in the hands of psychologists or psychiatrists for treatment, many still fail to find the necessary mental adjustments they are looking for, and it is the hope that this book will help in that direction, although it needs to be emphasized that it is not a treatise on psychology.

    Chapter 1

THE QUESTION OF THE EXISTENCE OF GOD AND THE ORIGINS OF THE UNIVERSE

The existence of God and the afterlife are notions we have been receiving from religions since time immemorial. We are told that other than our physical existence, there is, parallel to it, a kind of spiritual existence, nonphysical. Since in our present state of development we cannot perceive it, the idea, being entirely subjective, becomes a question of faith. And in the huge variety of human consciousness states found in this world we have those to have that faith and those who don't. For those who lean on faith, there is no need for proof. Blind belief is all they seem to require. For those who don't there is a need for solid, rational reasoning before they can turn themselves into believers.

The esoteric view with respect to the origins of the Cosmos is very much in line with one of the main hypotheses offered by Science, referred to as The Big Bang. Succinctly put, it is presumed that in some sector of space a huge explosion took place liberating atoms representing energy with a view to eventually constitute living matter. This, in occult terms, is known as the First Wave, which we are told produces seven basic kinds of matter.

As it is normal with any explosion, its expansion eventually comes to an end. That end establishes the limits of the Universe, determining its size. That First Wave is followed by a Second one, which arranges atoms into molecules and eventually builds forms, suns, planets, plus a huge variety of bodies that surges forth on those planets, all of it with one sole objective: the unfolding of consciousness through life in those forms, encompassing a prolong evolutionary process.

Freedom of opinion is of course found today in all civilized countries of the world, and anyone is free to think whatever he/she wishes. It is however reasonable to assume that the validity of ideas lies in their logic and reasonableness, and that in order to ascertain these one must study them carefully. Surprisingly though, the great majority of people, be they believers or atheists, ignore this and cannot show any clear and coherent reasons to explain or justify either their beliefs or disbeliefs. In other words, they have acquired or denied an idea about something they know little or nothing. What prompt their faith or the lack of it is
