    DIRTY PLEASURES

Butterflies floated in my stomach thinking about conquering this ride, it was huge! I’d never seen one that big. Even still, the world’s tallest roller coaster had stiff competition in this park. Famous twisters and vertical drops abounded at Thrill Seekers Point.

I want to go on that one, I said, pointing and bending backwards to see the top of the ride.

Ahhhh, Benton, my date, stammered. He’d started with the same reaction just before he claimed yet another ride that was out of his comfort zone. I’m not so sure Abby.

Disappointment bullet hosed all my floating butterflies to the ground.

I’ll go on it with you Aubrey. Jalen, my date’s best friend and fellow adrenaline junkie, said.

I’d been surprised when Benton asked if his buddy could go with us. Jalen’s features were the handsome shock value variety from his black short hair and sharp green eyes down to his devil may care stance. He wore baggy jeans, a t-shirt and leather jacket on this cool November Friday.

Yeah, Benton smiled apologetically. I’ll go on the next one.

That’s what you said last time. I sighed.

Benton cringed. I thought the next one would be... He bent back looking at the ride. ...a little smaller.

Benton had picked me up straight from work wearing tan slacks and a crisp white shirt leaving his tailored jacket in the car. Formal wear or not Benton rocked what he did have on. There was something different about him tonight. Most our dates were at restaurants getting to know each other, or in bed, getting to know each other. He’d been subdue, shy, and reserved. A perfect gentleman and a thoughtful lover. But when he picked me up tonight there was that spark of masculinity in him that shouted leader. After we encountered the first ride, that spark of virility vanished.

I smiled and flipped my hand at Jalen. Ready?

Sure thing. Jalen followed me to the back of the line and we waited at the forty-five minute mark. Thankfully being with Benton’s best friend wasn’t awkward. After the fifth ride without my actual date, Jalen and I had gotten to know each other well. Jalen was the sexiest mechanic I’d ever known. His sharp wit, dry humor and straight-forward questions and answers were refreshing.

So I’m beginning to wonder if Benton brought you because he didn’t want me in line by myself for the whole evening. I said.

Jalen smirked and leaned up against the railing. Honestly I didn’t want to come. Being a third wheel wasn’t my idea. But I’m glad I came.

Thank you. I dipped my head to him in gratitude. At least someone is.

The line moved and Jalen and I took one step closer to our destination. We both leaned against the railing, facing each other.

Jalen scratched his nose and said, So, I don’t mean to intrude on you and Benton, but he says you see other guys.

I looked at him and shrugged. Yeah. It wasn’t a secret I dated four guys. Though it was nobody’s business I was usually open to talking about it, within reason. Everybody had their own privacy threshold. Including the guys I dated.

Jalen moved a few steps with the line and people started filling in behind us. How does that work for you?

Tilting my head and eyeing him I contemplated if I should tell him or just let it be a mystery. It works just fine.

He flashed a genuine smile. Busy girl. He kicked himself off the railing and caged me with his arms. His brilliant eyes, strong nose and luscious lips filled my vision. Have room for one more?

Those crystal green eyes pierced my heart. My blood started racing and my eyes flashed over to Benton. He was in an avid conversation with a little girl too small to ride most the roller coasters here and her father next to him on the bench. I was trapped by sexy bad-boy and wasn’t sure if I wanted to shove him away or give him a time and place.

Jalen pushed off the metal guards and leaned back on his side of the railing. Didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.

Regaining my breath, I raised my cool hands to my flaming cheeks. Whoa. Jalen could spike heat into a Catholic nun. I, uhhh, I don’t date friends.

Jalen chuckled. He looked over to Benton. I’m getting the feeling that neither one of you are meeting expectations.

I forced my hands down. What do you mean? Has he said something to you?

He shook his head as we moved another inch down the line. Why is he there and I’m here? Something doesn’t add up.

Jalen had a point. Benton wasn’t my usual type. I dated a biker, a sky-diving instructor and a cop. Having a guy with a normal nine to five, Monday thru Friday mundane career was unusual for me. But underneath all the fun I was having with these guys, I wanted someone I could call my own. Choosing proved difficult and I wasn’t going to settle for anyone who couldn’t handle my free nature.

My husband, who ever that would be, had to tolerate my fly by night schemes and sudden wild hairs to vacation in Maui. Someone who needed to give a two week advanced notice to go on an excursion with me would miss the chance to go altogether.

Or maybe you’re just taking my friend for a ride? Jalen said. His eyes pinned me to the railing in accusation.

I looked around to the people next to us. They were all pretending to ignore our conversation. Even the couple spooning down a ways seemed to point an ear in our direction. Great. The first place that I hadn’t been recognized as my sportscaster persona and I still have people eavesdropping in my conversations.

A ride? I lifted an eyebrow. I wish Benton would ride with me on these roller coasters, but I wasn’t getting the impression that’s what Jalen was talking about.

Yeah, He shifted and slid across the railing moving with the line. You’re a love ‘em and leave ‘em type.

I smiled and took a step. Takes one to know one?

Jalen frowned and his eyes narrowed. Which is why you should be dating me. Jalen flipped his chin to Benton. You’ll only break his heart.

How do you know I won’t break yours?

He laughed. We both took another step to the front of the line. We were making good progress. The roar of the coaster and screams of the riders warned us the car would run past in between the gated area. There was a whoosh of wind and the coaster rushed over the track close to us. The screams faded and a metal tap, tap, tap signaled the mechanics adjusting.

So tell me honestly, Jalen said. Do you see a future for you and Benton?

What guy asks that? The question caught me off guard. Thinking about a future made me a little nauseous. Did he ask you to find out?

    No.

I pondered what I should tell him. Benton was really great. He was a good guy. He didn’t deserve to be led around if he wanted something more. But he should be asking me these questions. Not his gorgeous side-kick. I shrugged. I don’t know.

Jalen winced. Nothing worse than a girl who doesn’t know what she wants.

Hey, I said. But I didn’t know what to say to that. The kid next to us in line crossed his legs and leaned against the railing like he was looking for someone.

So, since you don’t know what you want, how do you know you’re not missing out on me? Jalen grinned.

Instead of giving him a quip I answered his flirtation as a serious question. I don’t know. This sexy man in front of me was insatiably tempting. But I usually didn’t date friends of friends. Or friends of the guys I dated. This might sound weird, but I don’t date guys that know each other.

Jalen matched my serious question and raised the bar.Do you tell all your boyfriends about each other?

I’m very honest to the men I date. They know about each other. The couple entwined together went back to kissing. My life wasn’t worth listening to, not when they seemed so in love with each other. In my heart I’d like to know what that was like. But no guy had reached me to that extent. Not yet.

"Do they really know about each other or do they know of each other?" Jalen asked.

What are you getting at? I gave him a contemptuous look.

Can Benton point your other boyfriends out in a crowd? Does he know their names?

Wow, Jalen had no problems addressing the meat of the situation. They haven’t met, I said. I try to be as discreet as possible.

More people filed in behind us and the line started moving. As I walked Jalen faced me, glanced behind him and swung himself down the line using the bars as his guide. So no phone calls during a date? He said.

I turn my ringer off and I go to the bathroom if I look at text messages. I stopped where the line did. Jalen looked behind him and leaned against a pole.

"I bet that doesn’t frustrate Benton." Jalen oozed sarcasm.

What do you mean? I was getting more frustrated with Jalen and his attitude.

How can he call you at the end of his day and talk to you when you’re out on a date? Jalen folded his arms.

I talk to him when I can. My agitation started to come out. I put my hands in my jeans pockets. The urge to slap him started boiling up.

I always know when he’s not out on a date with you, or when he hasn’t spoken to you after work. Jalen pointed a thumb at himself. He calls me and we go out.

Well, I’m glad he has a friend. I bowed my head in a thank you.

    Jalen tsked. Right.

What was up with the third degree? Benton and I had an agreement. If it became too hard on him he’d call it quits. Was he probing information via Jalen? Was
