Chapter 1
Detective Inspector Patrick O’Callaghan had worked for Scotland Yard for 15 years. He loves his job and the respect he receives from being a Detective Inspector. But, cases like this one troubled him, they troubled him a great deal. This murder was one of his most baffling and difficult cases to solve. It became known as the ‘case of the body in the locked room’, but D.I. O’Callaghan always called it the ‘case of the evil extermination of Alice Jaques’.
Morning Sergeant Connor, do you have the name of the deceased yet?
asked Detective Inspector O’Callaghan.
Connor and O’Callaghan had worked together for the past three years. They were friends, okay friends is probably too strong a word, they were colleagues. Each had a healthy respect for the others ability as a police officer, but let’s just say they wouldn’t be spending time socially together outside of work hours. They did have something in common though, the ability to see through the façade often hiding in a crime scene.
Sergeant Connor was bent down over the body of a beautiful woman, he peered up to Detective Inspector O’Callaghan.
Yes Sir. Jaques, she was Alice Jaques. Thirty years of age, and the owner of this establishment.
Alice ran a clothing business in the front section of the building.
She sold women’s and men’s clothing, up-market style, Sir, you know expensive-like. She was single, and lived alone. According to the woman who found the body...
Sergeant Connor paused for a moment to check his notebook. "Ah yes, a Miss Matilda Fitzpatrick, she said she has a gentleman friend who had taken a fancy to her, a Mr Daniel Cavindish. She stated that she is a good friend of the victim, and was concerned when she didn’t answer the door to the shop this morning. They were to have breakfast together at LeCherie. She grew increasingly concerned, and after a period of 30 minutes, went across the road to the hair salon and called the police. It’s odd Sir? Doc’s examined the body, and he swears it’s not suicide?
