Wow, what a great finale to the series! It's really a 4 1/2 star read (as other reviewers have said, Georgina is exceptionally clueless for much of the beginning of the book, especially for a jaded and experienced succubus) but the ending was so awesome I am totally willing to round up the final star. Richelle Mead really had a plan when she sat down for this series, and it all comes together beautifully in the end. (George Lucas should be taking notes. Really, to the people who were alive in the seventies and eighties for the "real" Star Wars movies, episodes 1-3 are nonstop, painful embarrassment that may never be gotten over. But I digress.) Knowing it was the last one, I put off reading it a bit--school was starting, I was afraid to see how it all was going to end, Seth's slip of the tongue at the end of the last novel kind of creeped me out--but I am so glad I took the time this week to get it done. It was all definitely worth the wait. I was listening on audio, and kept finding excuses for things I could do so I could keep listening. Dishes, laundry, moving furniture; you name it, I used it as a reason to plug in. Now that my favorite Seattle residents have their ending (and it's definitely a bittersweet one; not all sunshine and roses), I'm looking forward to picking up Bloodlines, and will add to my "to-read" list anything else that Richelle decides to write.

I want to say first that this series in a whole was absolutely amazing!... Yes there were things that you could kinda guess along the way but it is also the 6th book in the series and after 5 really good books the last one tied everything up perfectly... so yes a tad predictible but overall a good read and a must have for Georgina fans!!!

Sigh... the series is over... I liked how Mead wrapped it up - it was a sensible ending (almost like she must have thought through the whole series long before she got to the point of writing this final book). There weren't any real surprises in it though, I'm pretty sure if you've read the whole series, you'd have figured out by now that Carter was present for a reason... and there had to be something "special" about Seth (otherwise why would Georgina waste her time on his boring self??)...I think the characters were satisfactorily carried through to the end, and even Jerome's behavior makes sense since he is, after all, a demon from Hell. All in all, this was an interesting well-written series and I'm glad Mead was able to carry a decent storyline across 6 books without having any one of them be a "waste".

It feels like this book was written in a hurry to wrap up a series that probably could have had more life in it.
It's a supernatural story with barely any supernatural action, in fact barely any action of any kind. I so badly wanted something to happen.
*Reminding myself not to read this again because the only interesting part is the not-very-twisty "twist" in the end, and once you know what happens there's no other point to the book.

Aww...well she got her happy ever after but not before another emotional rollercoaster.

I loved the immortal gang; Peter, Cody and Hugh. Roman was cool in this one. Jerome was an arse and Carter was awesome--I think i fell in love with him by the end.

Finally, things look like they are coming together for Georgina Kincaid. Sure she's lost her job at Emerald City Books and her good friend Doug, but she still has her demon friends and most importantly she had Seth Mortensen.

Of course, having Seth comes with a cost. She's has to compromise with him on her no sex rules (because what Succubus wouldn't want to save the soul of the man she loves), but she figures losing a little piece of him every few months was worth it.

Unfortunately, her bosses in Hell can't risk that.

Where do you send a succubus you're trying to control? Why Las Vegas of course. Only things with this transfer aren't what they seem an it takes Roman, Carter, and Hugh to figure out why Hell is hellbent on getting Georgina out of Seattle.

This, the last book in the series, did not disappoint (especially for those of us that have been waiting what seems like forever for it). The road to Georgina's happily ever after did not come easily. Her first life, the one she's been running from all these years, comes crashing down on her just as she's dealing with the issue of her contract. Instead of doing what she normally does when that first life rears it's ugly head, she instead stayed and fought. Fought for her soul and fought for Seth.

It was refreshing to finally see Georgina realizing that maybe, just maybe, she's paid for the mistakes of her past life and it was her time to find happiness.

This was a great ending to a wonderful series. Have the kleenex ready, because Seth and Roman will have you wiping those tears away in a couple of scenes!

The book in and of itself was nice and interesting, but I kind of wish I had read any of the previous books beforehand to get better character descriptions. Had the book somewhere on the covers told me that it was 6th in a series, I would have held out on it and found and read the previous books first, as I don't like reading out of order. In all, Succubus Revealed brings a variety of immortal beings together to create a chaos of love and order in dealing with the contradicting souls of a human and succubus, and how they go through a battle of will and yearning.

I like everyone else, was eagerly awaiting for the 6th book in the series of Georgina Kincaid.  Even lucky enough to get a signed copy from Richelle wishing me a happy birthday. Like Richelle touched my book everyone, hello.  Thanks to my good friend Celine who suprise me with it. Anyway I couldn't wait to read this book and find out more about Seth and Georgina and Carter of course. But after the first few chapters I was a bit disappointed, I kept plodding on hoping and waiting for it to kick in and I put the book down half way and left it for days.  I mean days and if you know me Richelle is one of my most favourite authors and I would of normally read her book in a night but I was falling asleep. I  scoffed and sighed as I put the book down.  I should of known better, sorry Richelle. My friend kept encouraging me to keep reading and I read another chapter four days later and then the fast pace kicked in, the emotional tie was formed, tugging at my heart and the tears flowed and everything was revealed.  Being the last book in the series I suppose it has to be calmer than all the others, to me it took on more of a young adult read compared to the other 5 books. I am glad I read it, I am sad the series is over.  I loved Carter again as  I have through all the books and I really do hope we all have angels watching out for us. Does he comes to the rescue, you need to read, as heaven only knows. 4 stars

Any book that can make you feel an entire scope of emotions, is a must read to me. Succubus Revealed have me giggling with Georgie because of her goofy friends, I was so happy to see her and Seth's relationship going strong, but of course not everything is perfect. Your heart break's for everyone while Andrea is dealing with her cancer, and your heart breaks for Gerogina and Seth. It even had me tearing up at multiple points. Oh and I love, love, loved the ending, oh it was so sad and beautiful and full of so much love.

Again, any book that can make you feel THAT much... is a winner!

About two years ago I’d just discovered the fun to be had with books starring supernatural characters. I happened to find Richelle Mead’s Succubus Blues while browsing the shelves of my local library. Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance were both new to me and up until that point I was strictly a werewolf and vampire kind of girl. I read the synopsis on the back. Succubus living in Seattle...Works at a local bookstore...Demon boss obsessed with John Cusack...Succubus has a huge crush on a hottie author. I had to see what this series was about. I took it home and was hooked after just one chapter. Thankfully several books in Georgina’s series were all ready published, and I had several crazy tales involving Georgina and her friends to keep me busy. I actually read the first four one right after the other and it easily won a spot as one of my most favorite series.Georgina is a character I couldn’t help but to be drawn to (even with the whole minion of hell thing). She isn’t at all like you’d expect a succubus to behave. She struggled with guilt often over the choices she had made. She also cares so strongly when it comes to the people (human and not) in her life. I love quirky characters and definitely think that is an apt description for Georgina’s circle of friends. I loved this series from start to finish, even when things got a little dark towards the middle. Longtime readers of this series won't be disappointed. Richelle Mead gives us the closure we hoped for. I enjoyed spending this final action packed and emotional installment with the characters I've come to know and love. While I was so very pleased with the perfect conclusion to this amazing series, I was also saddened that it was the end. I hope Richelle Mead will consider using characters from Georgina’s world in a future series. I’d love the chance to see them again.Love Urban Fantasy? Hate waiting for the next book in a series? If you haven’t started this series you really must and you won’t even have to play the dreaded series waiting game. You know the one I’m talking about. Where you obsessively wait for the release date to finally get answers to the questions raised in the previous book, only to find yourself left with more questions at the end of the new release. The Georgina Kincaid series is complete and ready to be devoured :)

This is the sixth and final book in the Georgina Kincaid series. It was a wonderful conclusion to the series; it tied up things nicely and had some wonderful surprises.Georgina and Seth are finally getting things to work out between them. Georgina is working as one of Santa's elves to make ends meet, not a great job, but better than nothing. Seth's sister is struggling with cancer and this is putting a lot of stress on Seth. Then Georgina gets shocking news, she's being transferred to Las Vegas. It's a dream situation for her, but how will it affect her relationship with Seth? Also why was the transfer so sudden, does it have something to do with her contract with Hell? This was a great book. The mysteries behind Georgina and Seth feeling like they have always known each other and of what might be wrong with Georgina's contract with Hell are finally resolved. Let me tell you the resolution is wonderful and surprising and just very well done.I love these characters and all of them are back in this story. There weren't as many flashbacks to Georgina's past as in previous books, but we do finally learn the full history about her contract with Hell. Roman features in the story quite a bit, we also finally learn Carter's reason for being around.I loved how deep the conspiracy in Hell goes and how convoluted their efforts to keep Georgina from learning the truth about her contract are. The book was paced well, not much action but a lot of great mystery.Overall I really really enjoyed the conclusion to this series. All the big questions are resolved and the answers were unique and surprising, but obviously well planned. There aren't as many flashbacks into Georgina's past, but you do learn her full history. The book is well written, well paced, and more of a mystery than anything. Given how things end I am wondering if we will be seeing a spin-off series featuring Roman in future books...that would be awesome!

For shame on the reviewers who slammed this one. It was a very good read and a very satisfying wrap up of series. Okay, maybe delayed a few books too many coming to the plot resolutions and no real shockers -- but this is Georgina Kincaid and the other cast of character's storyline coming to a conclusion. The series is character driven; not exactly a real deep, intellectual, profound kind of series so what else were fans expecting from this final (at least for now) book? Hard to put too much in this review without spoilers, so I'll just say I really liked this read and (spoiler is a slight one) even enjoyed the not very original Daniel-Webster type of trial over her contract.

This is the final book in the Georgina Kincaid series. I enjoyed it as much as I did the rest of the series. I never saw the twist coming until I got into the book. It wasn't boring and predictable the way I thought it would be. I never suspected that Seth was a reincarnation of all of Georgina's past loves. Georgina and Seth get their happy ending and I got to enjoy a great series.

I was unsure of what to expect from this book, if I'm honest. I didn't particularly like Succubus Shadows, for some reason the Georgina spunk was missing. This one, though, was defintitely up to parr with what I'm accustomed to from Mrs Mead! I have been a Seth-Shipper right from the start. I won't say that I didn't smell the lute from a mile away, because ... let's be honest, how else should Seth have known about Letha? But I'm still glad it worked out exactly like it did. It was definitely confusing enough, and I can't say that I would have figured it out. It was logical, but the explanation was maybe a little bit rash. But Roman has been around a couple of centuries, so some wit is to be expected I guess. Oh Roman ... that's all I'm going to say for now.I think it's hard for a "mere mortal" to really unterstand what Georgina went through. Sleeping around doesn't exactly seem like such a hard fate, but never really being able to love just for love and not for pleasure ... well, humans weren't designed for that. Not even humans-turned-immortal. Be that as it may, though, I think the last bit was probably the most surprising. I always wondered what Carter was actually there for, except for the occasional nudge in the right direction. Huh, now we know I guess. Jerome's non-loyalty was to be expected but I still found it heartbreaking somehow. My thoughts are all over the place ... sorry for that.

The final installment of the Georgina Kincaid series is an enjoyable and satisfying read. The ending was predictable, but I think it would be disappointing if it ended any other way. I was pleased that the main questions were resolved and felt a sense of closure with the end of Georgina’s story. This time the story takes place at Christmas and our favorite succubus Georgina is working part-time as one of Santa’s elves at the mall. She and Seth are trying to make it work as a couple when she abruptly receives transfer instructions to move from Seattle to Las Vegas. It’s a dream job but the timing couldn’t be worse for Seth, as he can’t leave his brother’s family due to his sister in law’s cancer. Her friends think the timing of the transfer and the specifics are suspicious and help her get to the bottom of it.All of Georgina’s friends are back and there is a fondue party, secret Santa drawing, and Jerome even enlists the gang to win a bowling tournament against his rival. The Christmas setting makes a nice backdrop to the story, and you’ll never guess who plays Santa! I’ve enjoyed this group of friends throughout the books and their humor that counteracts the sadness in Georgina’s life. And where else can you find a demon like Jerome who chooses to appear as a John Cusack look alike? Her friends really come through for her when she needs them. This book ties up the loose ends very well and balances the storylines of Georgina’s contract, relationship, and Seth’s family illness. Even if you are not a fan of Georgina’s romantic choice, there is some gratifying character insight and redemption to be found in her circle of friends. Roman and Carter are standouts in particular. The action is weighted more heavily to the back half of the novel, but I still enjoyed the lighter moments with her friends and family in the first half.I will miss this series but I’m satisfied with how it turned out. Though most fans will have predicted this series conclusion, the ending feels true and in keeping with the other books. Like Mead’s Vampire Academy, this series is also a cut above the competition with its unique plot, characters and romance. I hope the author will write another adult series in the future.

An exciting conclusion to the Succubus Series. If you haven't exposed yourself to the charming wit of Georgina Kincaid and the interplay between her and her interesting menagerie of associates (both human and immortals), you have an opportunity for a generous treat by starting to read this amusing series of books chronicling the angst stricken life of a Succubus with a conscience. The dialogue between Georgina and her peers alone is enough for you to tear through this series of adventures. While this book has enough content to stand alone, you will enjoy it even more if you familiarize yourselves with the full range of supporting characters and how they fit together in Georgina's existence. Meet the Vampires, Imps, Demons, Angels and devious humans that have populated her life since her fall in the early 400's and the series of lives she has shared with her soul mate, as they transitioned through the ages together. In this book, they finally get it right and are suitably rewarded (hint, I had to shed a tear).

Let me just begin by saying that I have to love any book that opens with the line: “This wasn’t the first time I’d worn a foil dress. It was, however, the first time I’d done so in a family-friendly setting.” That being said, Richelle Mead has outdid herself on pure awesomeness when it comes to this last book in the Georgina Kincaid series. From evil bowling leagues to sacrificial love, this book will keep you turning page after page- especially if you’ve kept up with the rest of the series.I have to say that some of it was semi-predictable, though it was predictable in a way that didn’t make it boring. Richelle Mead uses foreshadowing from the get-go in book one, and if you are a person that over-analyzes anything they read, you’ve likely figured out some of the plot- though you can’t quite put together all the pieces. This adds to the tension. About halfway through the book when my one big prediction was being revealed, Richelle does so masterfully one little drawn out bit at a time that you, even knowing the inevitable, are literally hanging on every word.I was very sorry to see this series end, though hopefully we’ll get more out of Richelle Mead with a spin off series in some way. I’ve no doubt Georgina’s story is over and we won’t hear much from her, but there were a few unresolved plots that would be interesting to see done. I’ve fallen in love with Richelle Mead’s work though, so I know whatever she comes up with–I will be reading it.

Succubus Revealed is book six and last in the Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead.

Georgina is happy with her life. Finally she is together with Seth, she has her friends and love ones around her; apart from a crappy Christmas job and her missing her old job at the bookstore, we could say her life is as she have wanted it to be for a long time. But Hell has other plans for her. Georgina receives a sudden transfer to Las Vegas, but her transfer is a little bit suspicious because it breaks Hell’s usual modus operandi.
Georgina is send to Vegas for a weekend first to meet her new handler, and oh! big surprise is her favorite boss ever, also at her arrival she learns she is going to work with one of her best friends who also has been recently transfer to Vegas and during her weekend stay she finds her dreamed job too. Georgina is very excited about all that; even tough she is worried how things are going to work with Seth and the distance. Seth can’t move with her because his sister in law is still very ill and his brother needs him more than ever in Seattle.
But when Georgina returns to Seattle from her weekend in Vegas and starts to think with a cold head about her trip, she realizes everything was too perfect in Vegas for being just a coincidence. She shares her thoughts about it with Roman who promises to help her find out the truth. But sometimes the truth is a lot more than what you expected and in some cases a lot more than what you can handle.

Let’s start by telling you that I’m writing this review with mix feelings, not because of the quality of the book but because it is the last one of this wonderful series and I’m sure I’m going to miss Georgina and her gang.

Georgina has come a long way; we have seen her grow throughout the pages. She has made us laugh and even cry a bit and finally we are accompanying her to find the happy ending she so much deserves.

I have to be honest with you, I have never been a Seth fan, before Succubus Revealed I would have prefer if Georgina had her HEA with Roman but after reading Succubus Revealed I have become Team Seth.

Georgina and Seth’s love is one of those that transcend barriers. They can fight against it but sometimes there are things bigger than any of us can comprehend. I won’t give more away, if you a Georgina fan I’m pretty sure you know what I’m talking about, if not, go get the books and discover it for yourself.

We have a favorite saying among my friends: How can you tell if a demon is lying? His lips are moving.

Succubus Revealed is a book about love, friendship, intrigues, deceptions and acceptance. As I said before I don’t want to give much away, being the last book and all that, so let me just say that there were some characters that I wanted to kill with my own hands and others that broke my heart, some teary eyed scenes and other what! No, it can be! moments.
My favorite characters apart from Georgina were Roman and Carter, and I really wish Mrs. Mead write a spin-off series for them because I really would love to see and learn more about them.

I leaned my head against him. “Why are you so nice to me?”
“Because Carter’s not your only fan.” When I looked back up, I saw Roman’s green eyes were deadly serious. “You’re a remarkable woman, just by your own nature. Smart. Funny. Compassionate. But what’s really great is that you’re so easy to underestimate. I did when we first met, you know. And Hell is now. No matter what their reaction to …… is, I guarantee most of them doubt you have a chance. You’re going to prove them wrong. You’re going to break the unbreakable. And I’ll be there helping you, as much as I can.”

Did I told you I love Roman? *swoon*

The only complaint I have about Succubus Revealed and my reason not to give it 5 paws is that there were some side stories that didn’t provide anything to the story and felt more like page fillings than anything else (bowling anyone?), also some important situations in my opinion were left unresolved.

All in all Succubus Revealed is a great conclusion to a great series. If you are a fan of the series is a book you need to read and if you haven’t read Georgina’s books yet you need to do it as soon as possible. Georgina Kincaid series is too good to let it pass.
I really admire Mrs. Mead for ending her series in a high tone and not drag them endlessly as other authors tend to do. So, kudos to you Mrs. Mead.

Oh wow. I can't believe that this is the last book about my beloved Georgina. I have said a lot in the years that I have been blogging that I need to wait until all of the books in a series came out until I read it (ha. Ha. ha. Yeah, not going to happen, too many beauties) but this is the perfect example why. I have been able to binge read this and my head is so full of Seth and Georgina plus the rest of this beautifully crafted cast of secondary characters. Not even sure how coherent and not fan girly this review will be but here we go: Once we got into the heart of the story it started going after a breakneck pace that I'm used to. Of course there are surprises like stuff with the family and the transfer of course was mentioned in the synopsis but it's still a huge change just as it seems like Georgina and Seth have figured out something some normalcy for their relationship It's hard to see in Georgia enough so upset about leaving and knowing that seth wants to be around for Andrea and the girls who we have all come to love especially Kayla. There are of course questions and it seemed like the transfer was really rushed so of course Georgina follows her gut and it does seem like something more what's going on then what could be looked at as just a normal transfer. she's been in Seattle for quite a while after all. On there newly reformed relationship. Oh my gosh she is a genius. I'm nearing the end of the book and everything is perfect. From the first page of the first book all the details that were there are just come in together and its just like a puzzle that is so beautiful. I am loving loving loving it she is providing such a good closure and I'm just so excited to finish reading it but I just had to put in my paragraph being all fan girl. We get to see carter in this new magnificent light and the way that he is with the Mortensen's the girls and Andrea she's so sick just the things that he does and his willingness to really stand up for good it's just beautiful and I love it. Also the way that he is helping Georgina and then somehow he's just been such a good friend and caring for her even when he's an angel and she is an agent of hellAll the details from the plot line with Erik everything that he knew to his unfortunate ending all lines up. Roman Roman has come full circle and its me to sleep even though he still hiding himself from a lot of people he's been able to get into Georgina's inner circle and really just become her friend and put some of their not so fortunate past behind them and really help her out Along with all the intrigue and just wrapping up a the transfer beautiful story lines there still the humor and the snark that I've come to love and expect. Of all things Jerome is trying to prove that his crew in Seattle is better than Nanette's and the way that they're settling it is of course a bowling competition I mean really. All of these servants of hell with the exception of occasionally having Carter around are having a bowl off. From the weird way that we transfer papers came to Georgina and how the transfer seem to be so rushed to her weekend in Las Vegas. She had such a good time plus she was hired for a Vegas dancing position and her old boss Lewis was the supervisor there when the addition of the presence of Bastion her longtime friend. it all comes together as them covering something huge up and we get the hint of what the something is that they're hiding. When the big reveal of the plot line of her contract and something being off about that starts to come out I wanted to do a little dance and scream because somehow it never really crossed my mind that it was a possibility but it was just so so perfect. So just too kind of highlight and show what kind of wonderful writing there is and kind of sum up this book. Here's a quote from one of the last page: "a sacrifice born of love is almost as powerful a thing as a redeemed soul, both of them are blows to hell." Oh man, that epilogue and that ending oh my gosh it could not have been more perfect and made me want to cry and I loved it and it was beautiful and it was everything I wanted, it was perfect. In short, she's a genius.Bottom Line: Perfect ending, Mead is a genius.

I will admit that this is the only book I have read in the series but I am thankful I did not waste any money on this book or any of the other books in the series. This was not even interesting book it did not even make me want to read the other books in the series. I will admit to not being a big fan of vampire novels but I do read them just not often. But after reading this book I honestly do not think I will read any books about vampires for a long, long while. I do not know if it is the series I did not like or the writing. Who know's for sure but I do know that I will not be reading any other books by this author. Sorry but the story was not attention grabbing to me. The characters seemed dull and lifeless. The plot seemed to keep dragging on and on with no end in site.

Reviewed by: Rabid ReadsI’ve been postponing reading the final novel in this series because I just couldn’t bring myself to say goodbye to Georgina Kincaid. The ride has been fantastic, nearly every installment is a 5 star read however, like all good things it had to end sometime. But, boy what a way to go! Succubus Revealed sure wrapped things up with a bang! I never really picked up on the overall plot line of this series; Seth and Georgie’s on-again-off-again relationship has always been at the forefront but the significance of it never really hit me until this book. Their HEA not only exceeded my expectations but actually left me in awe. Well played Richelle Mead. Well played. The opening chapters of this book start out like all of those that came before it. Georgina is given a new assignment from Hell which in this case means she’s being shipped to Vegas; yet another obstacle in her relationship with Seth. I didn’t really think much of it nor did Kincaid because it was pretty much status-quo that is, up until things just seemed a little too perfect. Roman, being the shit disturber that he is, encourages his roomie to look into her succubus contract. Again. This leads them to search for answers in the most unlikely of places: Seth. What they uncover shatters both of their worlds beyond repair. The time for playing ostrich is over; now that the truth is out, it can not be ignored.I thought that Mead did a great job of gathering all of her characters together for one last hurrah. Aside from the bowling tournament which seemed a little ridiculous in my opinion (demons duking it out with strikes and spares, seriously?), I was happy to get some face time with each of them one last time. That’s the thing about this series, as much as I LOVE Georgie, I adore her friends almost just as much. Well, except Jerome. I enjoyed seeing Roman and Carter’s roles in Kincaid’s life come to fruition as well. Many other reviewers complained about the predictability of this book and I’m not sure if I just read the installments too far apart or if I was just too blind to see what was right in front of my nose but the big reveal caught me completely by surprise. The main plot of Succubus Revealed is pretty straightforward so I won’t delve into it any further for fear of revealing too much. This series really is worth experiencing from beginning to end so I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. The audio versions are all the more satisfying thanks to Elisabeth Rodgers’ brilliant narration skills. Having listened to every one of these books I now find it hard to picture any other voice other than hers as Georgina Kincaid. Her performance as my favourite succubus is incredibly memorable and spellbinding.Succubus Revealed is highly emotional, jaw-droopingly shocking and just plain fab. If you’re searching for a new series, you should make this one a priority.

A fantastic end to a wonderful series, very satisfying. What a roller coaster ride this series has been for the characters and it does not stop during this book. Georgina Kincaid is being transferred to Vegas. She will have to leave Seth, his family, all her friends. Roman smells something fishy with the sudden upheaval and searches for answers. Meanwhile life in Seattle is getting weirder, Geogina is and Elf, the demons have a bowling league, Seth's sister has unusual downs with her cancer, and Erik's death is coming into question.
Carter, the angel plays an important role finally revealing some hidden truths.
Everyones story is resolved. I will miss the characters.

Succubus Revealed - Richelle Mead

Chapter 1

This wasn’t the first time I’d worn a foil dress. It was, however, the first time I’d done so in a family-friendly setting.

Vixen!

Santa’s voice rang out above the mall crowd, and I hurried away from where I’d been corralling a group of Burberryclad kids. It wasn’t actually Santa Claus calling me, of course. The man sitting in the holly-and-light-bedecked gazebo was named Walter something-or-other, but he asked that those of us working as his elves refer to him as Santa at all times. Conversely, he had christened all of us with either reindeer or Seven Dwarves names. He took this job very seriously and said the names helped him stay in character. If we questioned that, he’d start regaling us with tales of his extensive career as a Shakespearean actor, one that he claimed had come to an end because of his age. We elves had our own ideas about what might have cut his career short.

Santa needs another drink, he told me in a stage whisper, once I reached his side. Grumpy won’t get me one. He inclined his head toward another woman dressed in a green foil dress. She was holding back a squirming boy while Santa and I conducted our conversation. I met her pained expression and then glanced down at my watch.

Well, Santa, I said, that’s because it’s only been an hour since the last one. You know the deal: one shot in your coffee every three hours.

We made that deal a week ago! he hissed. Before the crowds picked up. You have no idea what Santa endures. I didn’t know if it was part of his acting method or just a personality quirk, but he also referred to himself in the third person a lot. A girl just asked for SAT scores good enough to get her into Yale. I think she was nine.

I spared him a moment’s sympathy. The mall where we were earning holiday pay was in one of Seattle’s more affluent suburbs, and the requests he got sometimes went beyond footballs and ponies. The kids also tended to be better dressed than me (when I wasn’t in elf-wear), which was no small feat.

Sorry, I said. Tradition or not, I sometimes thought putting children on an old guy’s lap was already creepy enough. We didn’t need to mix alcohol into it. The deal stands.

Santa can’t take much more of this!

Santa’s got four hours left of his shift, I pointed out.

I wish Comet was still here, he said petulantly. She was much more lenient with the drinks.

Yes. And I’m sure she’s drinking alone right now, seeing as she’s unemployed. Comet, a former elf, had been generous with Santa’s shots and also partaken of them herself. Since she was half his weight, though, she hadn’t held her liquor as well and had lost her job when mall officials caught her taking off her clothes in The Sharper Image. I gave a curt nod to Grumpy. Go ahead.

The little boy hurried forward and climbed onto Santa’s lap. To his credit, Santa switched into character and didn’t pester me (or the boy) further about a drink. Ho ho ho! What would you like for this nondenominational winter holiday season? He even affected a slight British accent, which wasn’t really necessary for the role but certainly made him seem more authoritative.

The boy regarded Santa solemnly. I want my dad to move back home.

Is that your father? asked Santa, looking toward a couple standing near Grumpy. The woman was pretty and blond, with the look of someone in her thirties who’d been preemptively hitting the Botox. If the guy she was plastered all over was old enough to be out of college, I would have been very surprised.

No, said the boy. That’s my mom and her friend Roger.

Santa was silent for a few moments. Is there anything else you’d like?

I left them to it and returned to my post near the line’s start. Evening was wearing on, increasing the number of families turning out. Unlike Santa’s, my shift ended in less than an hour. I could get in a little shopping time and miss the worst of the commuting traffic. As an official mall employee, I got a considerable discount, which made drunken Santas and foil dresses that much easier to bear. One of the greatest things about the happiest time of the year was that all the department stores had extensive cosmetics and fragrance gift sets out right now, gift sets that desperately needed a home in my bathroom.

Georgina?

My dreams of sugarplums and Christian Dior were interrupted by the sound of a familiar voice. I turned and felt my heart sink as I met the eyes of a pretty middle-aged woman with cropped hair.

Janice, hey. How’s it going?

My former co-worker returned my stiff smile with a puzzled one. Fine. I . . . I didn’t expect to see you here.

I also hadn’t expected to be seen here. It was one of the reasons I’d chosen to work outside the city, to specifically avoid anyone from my old job. Likewise. Don’t you live in Northgate? I tried not to make it sound like an accusation.

She nodded and rested her hand on the shoulder of a small, dark-haired girl. We do, but my sister lives over here, and we thought we’d visit her after Alicia talks to Santa.

I see, I said, feeling mortified. Wonderful. Janice was going to go back to Emerald City Books and Café and tell everyone that she’d spotted me dressed as an elf. Not that that could make things worse, I supposed. Everyone there already thought I was the Whore of Babylon. It was why I’d quit a few weeks ago. What was an elf dress on top of that?

Is this Santa any good? asked Alicia impatiently. The one I saw last year didn’t get me what I wanted.

Over the buzzing of the crowd, I just barely heard Santa saying, Well, Jessica, there’s not much Santa can do about interest rates. I turned back to Alicia.

It kind of depends on what you want, I said.

How did you end up here? asked Janice, with a small frown.

She actually sounded concerned, which I supposed was better than her gloating. I had a feeling there were a number of people at the bookstore who would have loved the idea of me suffering—not that this job was so bad.

Well, this is just temporary, obviously, I explained. It gives me something to do while I interview for others, and I get a mall discount. And really, it’s just another form of customer service. I was trying hard not to sound defensive or desperate, but with each word, the intensity of how much I missed my old job hit me more and more.

Oh, good, she said, looking slightly relieved. I’m sure you’ll find something soon. Looks like the line’s moving.

Wait, Janice? I caught hold of her arm before she could walk away. How . . . how’s Doug?

I’d left behind a lot of things at Emerald City: a position of power, a warm atmosphere, unlimited books and coffee . . . But as much as I missed all of those things, I didn’t miss them as much as I missed a single person: my friend Doug Sato. He, more than anything, was what had spurred me to leave. I hadn’t been able to handle working with him anymore. It had been terrible, seeing someone I care about so much regard me with such contempt and disappointment. I’d had to get away from that and felt I’d made the right choice, but it was still hard losing someone who’d been a part of my life for the last five years.

Janice’s smile returned. Doug had that effect on people. Oh, you know. He’s Doug. The same, wacky Doug. Band’s going strong. And I think he might get your job. Er, your old job. They’re interviewing for it. Her smile faded, as though she suddenly realized that might cause me discomfort. It didn’t. Not much.

That’s great, I said. I’m happy for him.

She nodded and told me good-bye before hurrying forward in line. Behind her, a family of four paused in their frantic texting on identical cell phones to glare at me for the holdup. A moment later, they hunched back down again, no doubt telling all their Twitter friends about every inane detail of their holiday mall experience.

I put on a cheery smile that didn’t reflect what I felt inside and continued helping with the line until Sneezy, my replacement, showed up. I got him up to speed on Santa’s drinking schedule and then abandoned the holiday nexus for the mall’s back offices. Once inside a bathroom, I shape-shifted out of the foil dress, trading it for a much more tasteful sweater and jeans combo. I even made the sweater blue so that there would be no confusion. I was off the holiday clock.

Of course, as I walked back through the mall, I couldn’t help but notice I was never off the clock for my main job: being a succubus in the illustrious service of Hell. Centuries of corruption and seduction of souls had given me a sixth sense for spotting those most vulnerable to my charms. The holidays, while ostensibly being a time of cheer, also tended to bring out the worst in people. I could spot the desperation everywhere—those hoping to frantically find the perfect gifts to win over the ones they loved, those dissatisfied with their ability to provide for their loved ones, those dragged along on shopping trips to create a perfect holiday experience they had no interest in. . . . Yes, it was everywhere if you knew how to look for it: that sorrow and frustration tucked in amongst the joy. Those were exactly the kinds of souls that were ripe for the taking. I could have picked off any number of guys if I wanted to tonight and taken care of my quota for the week.

My brief exchange with Janice had left me feeling strange, however, and I couldn’t muster the energy to go strike up a conversation with some discontent suburban businessman. Instead, I consoled myself with impulse purchases for myself and even found a couple of much-needed gifts for others, proving that I wasn’t totally and completely selfish. By the time I left, I felt confident traffic had died down and would give me an easy drive back to the city. As I walked past the center of the mall, I heard Santa ho-ho-ho-ing loudly while waving his arms energetically around, much to the terror of a small child on his lap. My guess was that someone had cracked and broken the drinking rule.

On the way home, I noticed I had three voice mail messages, all from my friend Peter. Before I could even attempt to listen to them, the phone rang.

Hello?

Where are you? Peter’s frantic voice filled up the small space of my Passat.

In my car. Where are you?

At my apartment. Where else? Everyone’s here!

Everyone? What are you talking about?

Did you forget? Damn it, Georgina. You were a lot more punctual when you were unhappy and single.

I ignored the jab and scanned through my mental calendar. Peter was one of my best friends. He was also a neurotic, obsessive compulsive vampire who loved hosting dinners and parties. He usually managed to throw something together at least once a week, never for the same reason, so it was easy to lose track.

It’s fondue night, I said at last, proud of myself for remembering.

Yes! And the cheese is getting cold. I’m not made of Sterno, you know.

Why didn’t you just start eating?

Because we’re civilized.

Debatable. I pondered whether I wanted to go or not. Part of me really just wanted to get home and snuggle with Seth, but I had a feeling he’d be working. I likely couldn’t expect snuggling for a while, whereas I could appease Peter right now. Fine. Start without me, and I’ll be there soon. I’m just getting off the bridge now. Wistfully, I drove past Seth’s exit and instead set my sights on the one that would take me to Peter’s place.

Did you remember to bring wine? he asked.

Peter, until a minute ago, I didn’t even remember I was supposed to be at your place. Do you really need wine? I’d seen Peter’s wine cabinet. On any given day, he had a dozen each of reds and whites, both domestic and international.

I don’t want to run out of the good stuff, he said.

I seriously doubt you’re going to—wait. Is Carter there?

Yes.

Okay. I’ll pick up some wine.

I showed up at his apartment ten minutes later. His roommate and apprentice, Cody, opened the door and gave me a broad, fang-filled smile. Light, music, and the scent of fondue and potpourri washed over me. Their home put Santa’s gazebo to shame and had decorations filling every square inch. And not just Christmas ones.

Since when do you guys have a menorah? I asked Cody. Neither of you are Jewish.

Well, we’re not Christian either, he pointed out, leading me toward the dining room. Peter wanted to take a multicultural slant this year. The guestroom is all done in Kwanza decorations, if you know someone looking for a truly tacky overnight experience.

It is not tacky! Peter stood up from a table where our other immortal friends sat around two tubs of melted cheese. I can’t believe you’re so insensitive to other people’s religious views. Jesus Christ! Is that boxed wine?

You said you wanted wine, I reminded him.

I wanted good wine. Please tell me it’s not blush.

Of course it’s blush. And you didn’t tell me to bring good wine. You said you were worried Carter would drink all your good wine. So I brought this for him instead. Your wine is safe.

At the mention of his name, the only heavenly creature in the room looked up. Sweet, he said, accepting the box from me. Santa’s little helper delivers. He opened up the box’s dispenser and looked at Peter expectantly. Do you have a straw?

I sat in an empty seat beside my boss, Jerome, who was contentedly dipping a piece of bread in molten cheddar. He was the archdemon of all of Seattle and chose to walk the earth looking like a circa 1990 John Cusack, which made it easy to forget his true nature sometimes. Fortunately, his brimstone personality always came out the instant he opened his mouth. You’re here less than a minute, Georgie, and already you’ve made this get-together fifty percent less classy.

You guys are eating fondue on a Tuesday night, I retorted. You were well on your way without me.

Peter had settled himself back down and was trying to appear calm. Fondue is very classy. It’s all in the presentation. Hey! Where’d you get that?

Carter had set the wine box on his lap, dispenser on top, and was now drinking from it with an enormous straw that I suspected had been literally conjured from thin air.

At least he’s not doing that with a bottle of Pinot Noir, I told Peter good-naturedly. I helped myself to a fondue fork and speared a piece of apple. On the other side of Jerome, Hugh busily typed away on his phone’s keyboard, reminding me of the family at the mall. Telling the world about this lowbrow party? I teased. Hugh was an imp, a type of hellish administrative assistant, so he could have actually been buying or selling souls via his phone for all I knew.

Of course, said Hugh, not looking up. I’m updating Facebook. Do you know why Roman won’t answer my friend request?

No clue, I said. I’ve barely spoken to him in days.

When I talked to him earlier, he said he had to work tonight, Peter explained, but that we should go ahead and draw for him.

Draw? I asked uneasily. Oh Lord. Tell me it’s not Pictionary night too.

Peter sighed wearily. Draw for Secret Santas. Do you even read the e-mails I send?

Secret Santas? Seems like we just did that, I said.

Yeah, a year ago, said Peter. Just like we do every Christmas.

I glanced over at Carter who was quietly drinking his wine. Did you lose my hat? You look like you could use one. The angel’s chin-length, blond hair was even more unkempt than usual.

Tell us what you really think, Georgina, he replied. He ran a hand over his hair, but it somehow only made things worse. I’m saving it for a special occasion.

If I get your name again, I’ll buy you two hats so you don’t have to ration yourself.

I wouldn’t want you to go to the trouble.

No trouble at all. I get a discount at the mall.

Jerome sighed and set down his fork. Are you still doing that, Georgie? Don’t I suffer enough without having to endure the humiliation of a succubus who moonlights as a Christmas elf?

You always said I should quit the bookstore and find something else to do, I reminded him.

Yes, but that was because I thought you’d go on to do something respectable. Like become a stripper or the mayor’s mistress.

This is just temporary. I handed Carter the elegant crystal wineglass that had been sitting by my plate. He filled it with wine from the box and gave it back. Peter groaned and muttered something about despoiling Tiffany’s.

Georgina doesn’t need material things anymore, teased Cody. She’s paid in love now.

Jerome fixed the young vampire with a cold stare. "Do not ever say anything that saccharine again."

You’re one to talk, I said to Cody, unable to hide my smile. I’m surprised you could drag yourself away from Gabrielle tonight. His face immediately grew dreamy at the mention of his ladylove.

That makes two of us, observed Peter. He shook his head bitterly. You guys and your perfect love lives.

Hardly perfect, I said at the same time Cody said, "It is perfect."

All eyes fell on me. Hugh even looked up from his phone. Trouble in paradise?

Why do you always assume that? And no, of course not, I scoffed, hating myself for the slip. Things are fantastic with Seth.

And they were. Just speaking his name sent a flood of joy through me. Seth. Seth was what made everything worthwhile. My relationship with him was what had caused the rift between me and my former co-workers at the bookstore. They saw me as the reason for his breakup with Doug’s sister. Which, I suppose, I was. But no matter how much I’d loved that job, giving it up was a small price to pay to be with Seth. I could endure being an elf. I could endure the quotas he and I put on our sex life, to ensure my succubus powers didn’t suck him dry. With him, I could handle anything. Even a future of damnation.

There were just a couple of teeny-tiny things about my relationship with Seth that gave me pause. One had been eating at me for a while, one I kept trying to ignore. But now, suddenly, with my immortal friends watching me, I finally drummed up the courage to address it.

It’s just . . . I don’t suppose any of you told Seth my name, did you? Seeing Peter open his mouth in confusion, I immediately amended, My real name.

Why would that ever come up? asked Hugh dismissively, returning to his texting.

I don’t even know your real name, said Cody. Are you saying it’s not Georgina?

I regretted the words already. It was a stupid thing for me to worry about, and their reactions were just proving that point.

"Do you not want him to know your name?" asked Hugh.

No . . . it’s fine. I just, well. It’s just weird. A month or so ago, when he was half-asleep, he called me by it. Letha, I added, for Cody’s benefit. I managed to say the name without tripping over it. It wasn’t a name I welcomed. I’d shed it centuries ago, when I became a succubus, and had been taking assumed names ever since. In banishing that name, I’d banished that former life. I’d wanted to erase it so badly that I’d sold my soul in exchange for everyone I’d known forgetting I existed. That was why the conversation with Seth had totally blindsided me. There was no way he could’ve known that name.

You are the world, Letha . . . he had told me drowsily.

He hadn’t even remembered saying it, let alone where he’d heard it. Don’t know, he’d told me, when I questioned him about it later. Greek myths, I guess. The River Lethe, where the dead go to wash away the memories from their souls . . . to forget the past. . . .

That’s a pretty name, said Cody.

I shrugged noncommittally. The point is, I never told it to Seth. But somehow, he knew it. He couldn’t remember anything about it, though. Where he heard it.

He must have heard it from you, said Hugh, ever practical.

I never told him. I’d remember if I had.

Well, with all the other immortals traipsing through here, I’m sure it came up from one of them. He probably overheard it. Peter frowned. Don’t you have an award with your name on it? Maybe he saw that.

I don’t really leave my ‘Best Succubus’ award lying around, I pointed out.

Well, you should, said Hugh.

I eyed Carter carefully. You’re being awfully quiet.

He paused in drinking from the wine box. I’m busy.

"Did you tell Seth my name? You’ve called me it before." Carter, despite being an angel, seemed to have a genuine affection for us damned souls. And like an elementary school boy, he often thought the best way of showing that affection was by picking on us. Calling me Letha—when he knew I hated it—and other pet names was one such tactic he used.

Carter shook his head. Sorry to disappoint you, Daughter of Lilith, but I never told him. You know me: model of discretion. There was a slurping sound as he neared the wine’s end.

Then how did Seth find out? I demanded. How’d he know the name? Someone must have told him.

Jerome sighed loudly. Georgie, this conversation is even more ridiculous than the one about your job. You already got your answer: either you or someone else slipped up and doesn’t remember. Why does everything have to be so dramatic for you? Are you just looking for something to be unhappy about?

He had a point. And honestly, I didn’t know why this had bugged me so much for so long. Everyone was right. There was no mystery here, nothing earth-shattering. Seth had overheard my name somewhere, end of story. There was no reason for me to overreact or assume the worst—only a tiny, nagging voice in my head that refused to forget about that night.

It’s just weird, I said lamely.

Jerome rolled his eyes. If you want something to worry about, then I’ll give you something.

All thoughts of Seth and names flew out of my head. Everyone at the table (except Carter, who was still slurping) froze and stared at Jerome. When my boss said he had something for you to worry about, there was a strong possibility it meant something fiery and terrifying. Hugh looked startled by this proclamation too, which was a bad sign. He usually knew about hellish mandates before Jerome did.

What’s going on? I asked.

I had a drink with Nanette the other night, he growled. Nanette was Portland’s archdemoness. Bad enough she still won’t let me forget the summoning. She was also going off on some bullshit about how her people were more competent than mine.

I glanced briefly at my friends. We weren’t exactly model employees of Hell, so there was a very good chance that Nanette was right. Not that any of us would tell Jerome that.

So, he continued, when I denied it, she demanded we step up and prove what superior Hellish minions we are.

How? asked Hugh, looking mildly interested. With a soul pledge drive?

Don’t be ridiculous, said Jerome.

Then with what? I asked.

Jerome gave us a tight-lipped smile. With bowling.

Chapter 2

It took me a moment to really comprehend that in thirty seconds, the conversation had gone from a deeply seriously mystery about my love life to bowling for demonic bragging rights. And yet, this wasn’t a particularly unusual pattern in my world.

And by ‘we,’ added Jerome, I mean you four. He nodded toward Peter, Cody, Hugh, and me.

I’m sorry, I said. Let me make sure I’m following this. You’ve signed us up for some sort of bowling league. One that you aren’t even going to participate in. And this is somehow going to prove your employees’ ‘evilness’ to the world.

Don’t be silly. I can’t participate. Bowling teams only have four people. He didn’t comment on the proving evilness part.

Well, hey, I’ll totally yield my spot to you, I said. I’m not that great a bowler.

You’d better become one. Jerome’s voice grew cold. All of you had, if you know what’s good for you. Nanette will be impossible to live with at the next company meeting if you lot lose.

Gee, Jerome. I love bowling, said Carter. How come you never mentioned this to me before?

Jerome and Carter held gazes for several heavy seconds. "Because, unless you’re ready to take a fall for the team, you can’t really compete with us."

A funny smile fell over Carter’s face. His gray eyes glinted. I see.

I don’t really like your use of ‘us,’ seeing as you’ve already written off any participation on your part, I pointed out to Jerome, imitating his earlier snide tone.

Peter sighed, looking rather woebegone. Where on earth am I going to find tasteful bowling shoes?

What’s our team name going to be? asked Cody. That immediately degenerated into a conversation of truly terrible suggestions, such as Soulless in Seattle and Split Decision. After almost an hour, I couldn’t handle any more.

I think I’m going to go home, I said, standing up. I had kind of wanted dessert but was afraid
