About this ebook

A murder mystery reunites a veteran with an embittered ex in this romantic suspense novel by the New York Times–bestselling author of Kill Without Mercy.

Five brave military heroes have survived the hell of a Taliban prison to return home—and take on civilian missions no one else can. They’re the men of ARES Security. Highly skilled, intimidating, invincible, and one by one, tested again and again . . .

Lucas St. Clair’s prestigious family had a political future planned out for him—one that didn’t include his high school sweetheart, Mia Ramon. Under their pressure, Lucas gave her up. But since surviving captivity, he’s a changed man—and a crucial member of ARES Security. When he discovers a dead man clutching a picture of Mia that bears a threatening message, his fiercest protective instincts kick in, and he knows he must go to her.

Mia has never forgiven Lucas for breaking her heart, and she’s convinced her feelings for him are in the past. But it’s soon clear that isn’t true for either of them. Now, determined to solve the crime and keep Mia safe, with his ARES buddies backing him up, Lucas will have to reconstruct the murder victim’s last days—and follow a lethal trail that leads right back to the fate of the woman he still loves . . .

I have been counting down the days waiting on this book. Ms. Ivy has always been on my favorite authors list and I loved her paranormal series. This new series about five ex-POWs starting a security firm while also finding women they can love is just perfect. I've really liked all the characters that have been introduced so far, so I really don't think there will be a bad book in this series at all. My only problem is I have to wait for each book; It's sooo long between them (not really, but it feels like it). Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Kill Without Shame by Alexandra IvyARES Security #2Another action-packed romance with murder, suspense, a bit of a mystery to solve and a second chance at love for Lucas and Mia was okay for me but did not have me as enthralled as the first book in the series.Lucas had Mia dated in high school but 15 years before the book starts he decided they should break up for her own good – without asking or explaining or anything. When he realizes she might be in danger he drops everything, utilizes ARES Security personnel (his buddies from the service) and goes to protect Mia. Needless to say Mia is less than excited…at least at first. Personally I would have given him the boot or made him work harder to get me back but she did what she did for her own reasons. They do get their HEA but only after quite a few leads are followed, their lives are threatened, a secondary romance takes place, hooks for future books in the series are set and the bad guy is caught. I have to say the story was well written if slightly predictable to me. I am not a great fan of second-chance-at-love stories because when I dated guys a second time the same things that were wrong with the relationship proved to be wrong the second time, too. Unless there is some major and believable reason for the separation, of course. I enjoyed the story and do look forward to reading the stories of Teague, Max and Hauk in the future. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the copy to read. This is my honest review. 3 Stars

This book was barely readable. Nothing like Alexandria Ivy's usual writing. I have no idea how this is the same author of some of my favorite books. Perhaps she used a novice ghost writer? I would not waste your time on this series.

This installment in the ARES series is an edge of your seat thriller with a whole load of romance. Back home Lucas St. Clair has deep roots and big connections but he wants nothing to do with them. Which is why he left them and the only woman he had ever loved behind. But when Mia Ramon is threatened he will move heaven and earth to keep her safe. But Mia is wary of the man who broke her heart. And she is determined not to depend on him ever again. Unfortunately, they need each other to figure out who killed their friend and who now has Mia in their cross-hairs.

I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the first in the series. I think it's probably because I rarely find second chance stories to be as enjoyable. I'd rather enjoy the thrill of a new romance than hash over what is often petty grudges over the stupidity of youth. Teenagers make stupid choices, it's how we (hopefully!) learn to make better choices in the future - get over it.
Given that, I found grown up Lucas and Mia to be reasonable people with robust lives and the suspense story was interesting without being too over the top. I'll definitely read #3 when it comes out.

You know these dumb horror movies with a blond girl going alone to the basement to check out this creepy sound in the dark? This book is like one of those movies.

It made me roll my eyes time after time and annoyed me a lot. This story has some potential. I won’t say it could be made into a great book, definitely not into the one truly memorable, but it could be one of those nice, entertaining reads. Unfortunately, there are too many issues.

Let’s start with the minor things before we go big. The characters. Lucas and Mia. Mia is one of those irritating heroines with no preservation instinct who always know better and have to have the last word in every conversation. As an owner of a company in the gardening industry, she feels competent to investigate the murder case of her friend. Because why not? And two attempts on her life do little to stop her or at least slow her down. As opposite, Lucas is totally dull. He is seriously lacking personality. The only thing that describes him is his love for Mia. He has no other traits or flaws. And stubborn as a mule Mia does with him what she wants. As a professional he could lead the investigation (though he is a military negotiator, so I’m not really sure about his competence, but anyway, he is definitely more capable than Mia) but instead he is leaded by Mia. And if truth be told, even Taylor and detective Cooper make more interesting couple than Mia and Lucas. They love is as paper-thin as their personalities.

Then comes the plot. Huh. The suspense is not as bad as it could be, if you disregard the fact that the villain is the most obvious person and the motives are also pretty clear from the beginning. But it’s the case with many other books. It’s the futility of some scenes that ruins the whole experience. They are just out of those horror movies or some cheese romantic comedies you are embarrassed you are watching.

Like, what is a better place to start a serious and long conversation about feelings and the future of their relationship than the dilapidated shed in the middle of nowhere that looks like straight out of a horror movie (as described in a book)? And of course neither Lucas nor Mia can multitask. To have this conversation Lucas has to put his phone somewhere on a nearby table, tuck his gun to have his both hands free to caress Mia’s face while sending her long looks. And God forbid, they will have this conversation after they grab the letters from the shed or in the meantime. And by the way, what is a better place to read the letters than abovementioned shed lighted with phone application. Taking them to your secured penthouse is so much trouble!

And this Teagan’s phone call to Max in one of the last chapters? Teagan says Lucas may be in danger and neither Max nor Teagan can contact him but rather than trying to check up on the couple, they have a lengthy chat. And Teagan just can’t simply tell what is going on, oh no, he has to build up the drama and reveal every morsel of information unhurriedly when asked directly. After all, drama is all that matters! With friends like these, you don’t need enemies.

Those scenes just scream: Kill them! Kill without shame! They are too stupid to live! I wish the other members of ARES are less paper-thin but from the glimpse I have, they are not. I will give a chance to this series only when I need one of this book for a challenge.
