About this ebook
In the New York Times bestselling author’s post-apocalyptic romantic adventure, a former FBI agent gets close to a man she can’t trust—or resist.
Before the Scorpius Syndrome tore through North America and nearly wiped out the population, Vivienne Wellington was the FBI’s best profiler. Now she’s one of the very few who survived infection. When she woke up from a drug-fueled nightmare of captivity, her trust in her fellow man had gone from shaky to nonexistent. Her mysterious rescuer wants to convince her he’s the exception. But no matter how tempting he is, with his angel’s eyes and devil’s tongue, Vinnie knows she shouldn’t trust him.If the FBI were still around, they would rate Raze Shadow as one of the bad guys. Military man or not, his association with the Mercenaries makes him untrustworthy. He won’t even tell Vinnie his real name. But there’s no FBI in the new America of fear and firepower. And the way his arms wrap around her tells a different story. Whatever else Raze is concealing, he can’t hide his desire.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5First, this is the second book in a series and, apparently, we got a lot of backstory there that wasn't repeated in this one. The world has fallen apart. A new virus called scorpius has killed most and those who survived are in danger of going insane in a world that has lost all its infrastructure. The main characters in this one are Vinny Wellington and Raze Shadow. Vinny was a noted FBI profiler before the world fell apart. She was recently rescued from the sociopath who is now the President of the United States. Raze is the one who rescued her but he has an ulterior motive. He needs to trade her to a Mercenary group who is holding his only sister hostage. They have taken refuge in a place in Los Angeles that is called the Vanguard. It is where some survivors who are not insane have gathered to try to survive. The Vanguard is suffering from internal problems with a self-appointed preacher who wants to keep the Pure - those who haven't caught the virus - separate from those who have had the virus and is willing to take hostages to keep his people safe. Between the Mercs who want Vinnie because they think she knows the location of a secret bunker that has the scientific labs, medicines, and other supplies to help find a way to let those infected stay sane and the President who wants Vinnie back because he wants to torture her and also believes she can use psychic gifts to find the bunker, Vinnie is in danger from all sides. Raze tries not to get close to her but this is a romance. You know that that is a battle he is doomed to lose. I liked the way the romance grew through the book. Raze was the definition of an alpha warrior but Vinnie is no shrinking violet. Her strengths matched up nicely with his. While the romance plot came to a successful resolution, there are still lots of questions remaining about the part of the plot that had to do with finding the bunker. I would guess that there is at least one more book coming. I'll be watching for it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It seems as if I've been waiting for this book forever. I love everything that Rebecca writes and eagerly pre-order each new release. This book was the second in the Scorpius Syndrome universe and the main characters were Raze Shadow and Vivienne (Vinny) Wellington. Raze is a mystery with his own agenda that puts the leader of the community in a position to decide if he's on the good or bad side. Vinny had been rescued from captivity and is trying to get a handle on her place in Vanguard. Trust comes each of them, but at a cost. They need to figure out if it's worth the price. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Shadow Falling by Rebecca ZanettiScorpius Syndrome #2Well worth the wait for book two in this marvelous series BUT now I have to wait for book three! Just looked…won’t be out till next January! Jax Mercury and Lynne Harmony are still together in what was once Los Angeles and continue to play a big part in this new and wonderful post-apocalyptic dystopian series set in California. Although this is the story of Vinnie and Raze it also keeps tracking characters from the first book while introducing new characters who easily could show up in future books. Vinnie was rescued from evil President Brett Atherton at the end of book one, Mercury Striking, and was carried out of the horrors she had suffered through by Raze Shadow. This book begins about a week after her rescue and she is having a rather difficult time dealing with flashbacks, hallucinations and nightmares. Raze offers his room to her in headquarters so she can live with others rather than on her own in a place that will put her closer to where she will begin to work for Vanguard – the group Jax is leading. Vinnie and Raze are drawn to one another but Raze has a secret that is tearing him apart and Vinnie fears she is never going to be the same after what she has been through. That does not stop them from growing closer to one another both mentally and physically. Raze is on a mission that is compelling but as he gets to know Vinnie better he is nearly torn in two while contemplating what to do. Vinnie is a strong woman with a great deal of empathy with the ability to can “read” people and this asset is wanted by many for a variety of reasons. Raze’s military skills and other strengths will stand him in good stead wherever he goes. Both Vinnie and Raze want to “belong” and may have found where they will fit best in Vanguard…if they survive. In this crazy new world many have been attacked by the Scorpius virus and it has had an impact in ways that have changed the world forever. Most are dead, many have become raving maniacal cannibals and others have become stronger and faster and much more lethal. Groups have been created by leaders and those known of through the books so far include: Vanguard led by Jax and in what was once Los Angeles, the Mercenaries led by Greyson “Grey” Storm located further up the California coastline, the 20’s – a Los Angeles gang Jax once belonged to long ago. Some might end up working together in an attempt to create a new world order while others might only be interested in promoting themselves. With plenty of action, interesting new characters, mysteries to solve, some flirting and romance, the need for a cure and the search for the bunker that may hold answers I found that this book had everything I needed to keep me reading into the wee hours of the morning. I hated it ending and look forward to finding out what will happen in book three where Tace and Sami will have their stories told. I see more books in the future and look forward to reading each and every one of them! This book made me think, again, of the “what if” of a world changed forever…and just how scary it might be. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. 5 Stars
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The world Rebecca has crafted in the Scorpius Syndrome series is high-octane... action, adventure, sex, and intrigue are all at the forefront of these stories. Larger than life alpha males and the brilliant, strong women who bring them to heel.Raze - a mysterious man whom no one is truly sure is 100% on their side - is driven to protect Vinnie from the first moment he lays eyes on her, but is his protection self-driven or is there something else behind his interest?Vinnie - a brilliant woman made all the more brilliant by Scorpius - is pulled inexplicably toward Raze despite her reservations about his motivations. Wanted by many, but treasured by one, can she overlook split loyalties to see what lies beneath Raze's rough exterior?Theses stories will suck you in, wring you out, and leave you wanting more! The characters are well-developed. The world they live in is brilliantly crafted. Overall this series screams MOVIE! Don't wait - read this now!**I received a complimentary copy of this e-book from NetGalley.**
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I love this couple but the plotline of this book let me down a bit. There are too many bad guys and too many future couples being set up at once. You kinda need a scorecard and it detracts a but from the main story. Still a good read, just not huge star territory.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Raze is an excellent soldier but he's keeping secrets. And Vinnie has everything to do with those secrets. There's something between them but Raze cannot cross the line or his secret mission would be jeopardized. Vinnie was the FBI’s best profiler and she is discovering secrets of her own. The combination of Scorpius and mind altering drugs have done something to her and that puts her in even more danger. Or is she the dangerous one? She knows Raze is up to something, that he's got a plan for her but she can't stay away. Neither can he for that matter and the conflict of interest is just too much to bear. She is his weakness and he has too much to lose. Coming clean to Jax might save his life but it may just be the death of him.
Life in post apocalyptic L.A couldn't get tougher than this as multiple issues arise and the safe haven that is their home gets caught in the crossfire.
