    Introduction

This is a story that takes place in Up-State New York in one of the oldest and toughest prisons in the country. Clinton Prison had the bragging rights since its inception 165 years ago that there was never a successful prison escape, until just two years ago when that string was broken by two dangerous killers, that brought fear and uneasiness for three weeks to the North Country, until one escapee was killed and the other captured.

This is a story about two main characters. The first, according to the FBI and New York Organize Crime Task Force is a leading member of the mafia. The uniqueness of this seventy-year-old man is that he has authored three bestselling books while claiming to have never read a book.

He was sent to prison after being convicted of being the driver in a mafia hit that the prosecution claimed occurred twenty years before his arrest.

The story illustrates how he has spent the last six years of his incarceration by writing his books along with becoming legendary for mentoring, helping, and inspiring many of the inmates.

The second character is a sixty one-year-old man that is a world-renowned psychologist-psychiatrist whose patients are the top billionaires of the world. This man holds a Ph.D. degree in psychology and a M.D. degree in psychiatry from Harvard University.

This man’s fate brought him to prison after being found guilty of the mercy killing of his wife who had a terminal illness.

The story starts off with the psychiatrist coming to prison having many psychological problems himself. It was only after he heard about the old man, who has been known throughout the prison as one who inspires hope and encouragement to the inmates, that he saw hope for himself.

Once he learned that the old man had authored three books, he immediately ordered them and had them sent to him. After reading the old man’s writing he was certain that this is the person to help him, even before he met him. So, the doctor made every effort in which he succeeded to be transferred to the same cell block as the old man.

After the two of them finally got together and the old man learned about the doctor’s credentials, the first word uttered out of his mouth was DESTINY. Much of the old man’s writing pertains to the subject of destiny, and he had been hoping for some time that he would run into a man with such credentials as the doctor.

You see, the old man believes that he had a few occurrences where he heard his mother’s spirit speak to him. Despite much evidence to validate what she said to him, he didn’t have the courage to speak about it.

Being a man that has been blessed with common sense, he was aware that things don’t go against the laws of nature and for that reason is why he kept his secret to himself. Then one day there was an event that gave him the courage to go forth with his story, and that is what had driven the old man to write his first book.

Now the old man sees the opportunity to speak to one of the great intellects of the world about his experiences, and that was very important to the old man.

Little did the old man know that the doctor was in much greater need in him rather than him in need of the doctor, in fact, as the story goes forth, the old man is able to recognize that he’s not in need at all of the doctor, but the doctor is truly in need of him.

You are about to read one of the most incredible secret stories ever being told to you by a world-renowned psychologist-psychiatrist to an alleged mob boss about the richest, most powerful, and secretive club that had ever been assembled in the history of man.

    Author’s Quotes

To our most precious treasure that has given us life, we call this gift, Mother.

I cry out to be heard, for there is much to be said, and destiny has shown me the words to say.

To be able to see light even in darkness is truly a blessing and for this reason is why I write.

I have to remind myself that I have not chosen writing, but writing has chosen me.

Throughout my life I have tried my very best to be whatever I wanted to be, BUT FAILED. Now in the twilight of my life, I see, that I have succeeded, just knowing that I have tried my very best.

It really sucks getting old, but what a true blessing it is, to be alive, to have the experience.

Words are impressive, but actions are convincing.

    Chapter One

It’s Saturday morning, the end of June, only a few weeks have passed by since my seventieth birthday. I’m still in prison on a twenty year to life sentence for being accused of being the driver in a mafia hit that they say occurred twenty years before my arrest.

Five years have already passed by since I was first incarcerated and my lawyer still has not completed my first appeal. Being such an incredible believer in destiny, I have never rushed or pressured my lawyer to complete my appeal, for I have no doubt that the last five years of my life, being here, has been all part of my destiny.

There has not been one single day that was wasted of those five years being incarcerated, with the exception of when from time to time, I had gotten sick. All my time each day is spent on my writing and mentoring many of the inmates when I see the possibility of them turning their life around.

As for my writing, I believe with every fiber of my being that destiny has me writing in the twilight of my life to bring forth a message. That is the only reason why I’m inspired to write, the insight that is given to me tells me what to write.

I have written four books since I’ve been in prison, three were published, given five STAR ratings, and all hit the best-selling list in the spiritual category. My other book, Mysteries and Beliefs, I withheld from being published because I wanted to restructure it in a way for the reader to better understand just what I’m trying to convey.

Now that I have finished my latest book, The Great Escape: The Inside Story of the Dannemora Prison Escape, I’m planning on getting started on the restructuring of my manuscript of Mysteries and Beliefs today. I realize how important this book is to be published for the masses of people to read, and my insight is telling me that even though there are many messages that can be given from all my writings, this book, Mysteries and Beliefs will be the culmination of all my books and the optimum reason why I have been destined to write and fulfill my purpose in life.

Even though I say these words, and know them to be true, even though I plan to immediately get started on the restructuring of my manuscript, somehow, I know, that for now, that will not turn out to be.

Despite having that premonition, I dug into my files to get the Mysteries and Beliefs manuscript. Even before I was able to take it out of the large manila envelope, I heard a voice asking the question, Excuse me, are you Doc? As I looked up I saw this short, stocky, baldheaded man with a pot-belly and these thick glasses, he was sporting a thick black and white pile of hair between his nose and upper lip–he reminded me of the cartoon character, Mr. McGoo.

As a betting man, I would wager that he definitely had seen at least his sixtieth birthday. As I replied to his question, Yes, I’m Doc, he extended his hand out as he began to introduce himself as Harry Goldberg. He then went on to say that he has been trying to meet me since his arrival to lower F block, the reception block, two months ago. He said that he had overheard much talk about me from both inmates and officers alike.

He then mentioned how there is much talk about the books that I wrote. He told me what really interested him is when he heard how I try and help inmates, young ones in particular. He said that he was told that I have a reputation of knowing how to motivate and inspire these inmates to have hope, and give them encouragement and wisdom, making them aware of the importance of positiveness and optimism.

He said I’ve been told that you have a very special gift on how you are able to reach each inmate in their own special way that is needed, and that really interested me.

Doc, I want you to know that I put in a special request to be sent to your block and to be hired as a porter so I could be around you.

That’s when I stopped Harry. Till then, I hadn’t said a word with the exception that I confirmed that I was Doc.

From when he first introduced himself, he did all the talking non-stop. I must admit that it wasn’t hard to listen to all the flattering things that were being said about me. HA! As he was talking, it did cross my mind that this guy might have a brain. I did get excited from the thought of the possibility of having some intellectual conversations with him.

I then began to speak, "Harry, listen carefully to me, from the first hour that I arrived here at Clinton Prison I became a porter, in my opinion, I couldn’t have been any luckier than that. I had no intention of working, and at my age it wasn’t mandatory to work, but after I saw all the benefits that came along with the porter job, I had no doubt that it was the best job in the prison, at least for me.

Why I’m telling you this is because porters come and go here all the time. They are always getting fired for doing stupid things and blow such a good opportunity to reap the benefits from what the porter job offers.

Harry couldn’t respond fast enough when he said, Doc, I promise you, I will do a good job as a porter, and I will not get fired. I responded saying, Okay, you do your job, stay out of trouble, and I promise you that nobody will bother you, you will be happy here.

I assumed that this is what Harry was looking for, protection. It was easy to notice that Harry had money, and from his statue and appearance he looked like an easy mark. It didn’t take me long to figure out Harry’s motive, it was easy to see that he was a smart man and certainly no dummy.

I then said to Harry, Did they just send you here to this block today? Harry’s response was, Yes, and as soon as I was able to put my property in my new cell 24, on company three, I immediately came down to company one to see you. I then told him that the cell to the left side of me, cell 16 is open, the porter that was in that cell just went on the draft. You could see his eyes light up from the thought that he might become my cell neighbor. I then said, I usually don’t ask the officers for anything, but I’m going to go to the head officer who is working this block to ask if he would move you now into a porter cell, being that you have been hired for the porter job.

Usually it takes a few days for them to make the move, but by then the cell next to mine may get filled by another new porter. I then told Harry, Hurry, go up to your cell and bring all your property down here to my cell and wait for me. Harry left so fast in the direction of his cell that I thought it was one of these 20-year-old porters chasing their girlfriend.

When I arrived back to my cell, Harry was nervously waiting there with those puppy eyes and property bags all around him, hoping that he would become my cell neighbor.

Before I had gotten a chance to open my mouth, the cell gate door for cell 16 opened. At that moment, you could see a cry of relief from the little man as I told him to start putting his property bags into his new cell. I then said to Harry, Get yourself situated where you get your new cell in order to your liking, and then give me a holler. His enthusiastic response was, Doc, I can’t thank you enough.

Now that I had gotten Harry situated, I decided to lie down and start to think about how I was going to approach working on my manuscript. The problem was that I couldn’t get Harry off my mind. Something was telling me that destiny has brought this man here to me for a purpose. I had the thought that as I got to know the man, perhaps there would be a sign revealed to me.

After having that thought, I nodded out for about twenty minutes until Harry came walking into my cell and asked, Doc, are you busy? even though he saw me lying there on my bed. I immediately said with half laughter, Very good Harry, you’re the first to realize that despite me lying down I could be working with my mind being in deep thought. When I try to tell others that, they laugh and don’t believe me. We both had a chuckle over that comment.

As I was getting up, I asked Harry to have a seat at the end of my bed. He seemed quite comfortable and relaxed when he told me that he had gotten his cell organized and situated the way he wanted it.

He then asked me the question, Doc, I believe I know a few of your friends, Frankie the noise, Joey tomatoes, and Lefty from downtown. The blood started to rush to my head and I became irate as I responded by saying, Fuck any name you tell me, I don’t care about anyone’s name, I only care about you, I don’t give a fuck about anyone you might know, names of people mean nothing to me.

I said what I said in a tone of voice that had poor Harry shaking in his pants. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t know that throwing names around was one of my pet-peeves.

Harry no longer looked relaxed and comfortable, like he did when he first came into my cell. Ironically, despite all the kind, nice, flattering things that he had said about me, he didn’t even make it to one full day before he saw the other side of me. Nevertheless, he asked the question if I knew him, he said, Doc, do you recognize my name? Have you ever heard of me?

Hearing that question made my heart stop beating for a moment, the blood started rushing to my head again, as I began to ask myself within a split second of hearing the question, Oh my God, is this guy some famous mass murderer, or some well-known child molester?

After having those thoughts, I answered Harry’s question, "No, I do not recognize your name, or recall knowing of you. I was aware
