Second Chance (The Cashmere Chronicles Book Six) - Grace Walter

Wrapping presents is one of my favorite things about the holidays. Even though it's time consuming, unnecessary, and horrible for the environment, I love a perfectly wrapped gift. The way it sits there, under the tree, with its tight corners and perky bow. I have a coveted stash of rolls from Paper Source that I collect all year long- gold leaf touches, marbled blush designs, and even a few on-trend llamas in sweaters. Of course, each gift must also be in a perfectly sized box, wrapped and finished off with an elaborate ribbon. Lastly, the gift tags can't be just anything, they need to have their own special string and dangle just off the bow so that it's obvious someone has not only selected a new trinket for you, but it comes with a message of love just for you.

So when a beautifully wrapped gift sat waiting under the tree for me on Christmas Eve, I knew it was much more than a superficial holiday gesture. The paper was gold with a white glitter hexagon pattern that caught the light. The tag was more of a card taped on top with my name on it, and opening it revealed the words Second Chance?

With all the chaos that has been swirling around me the last two weeks, I feel as if I have gained years of life experience in a super short period of time. Thankfully I finally have a moment to take a breath and sit down here to examine this box, not immediately sure who it's from, not knowing that it has more meaning than I anticipate. It's as if this box in my lap is staring at me and saying, Gray, everything is going to be ok.

Two weeks ago, while on the phone with Georgia - my best friend that I call every morning - we realized that in all of the recent changes of our lives neither of us had made any solid plans for how we would spend the holiday. I will admit, I have not had the mental space to think about what this holiday meant to me, to my son, to my now almost ex-husband.

My divorce has been cruising forward in a calm, pragmatic fashion. It's obvious it's just something on my husband's to-do list. Stop at Harrod's for cliché gift for son, check. Stop for fish and chips, check. Send Gray divorce papers, check. Our mediator said that this has been the most vanilla divorce she has ever facilitated. No feelings, no fighting, just a big line 50/50 line down the middle. Like
