Hello for all of you reading. My name is Gage Gallagher and I am 22 years of age. For the past 4 years I have lived in the republic of China, what a crazy place! Whilst there I working as a teacher (legally working I swear) and all was happy for a few years. But then one day something inside me clicked. I was walking home from work with a skull splitting headache, (from kids screaming) milk stains on my shirt (from kids spitting milk at me) and bite marks on my arms (you can probably guess). Then suddenly it occurred to me that I had no idea what I was doing. So I decided to fix that, I decided to work towards something that I have wanted to do for a very long time. I decided to become an author. It was not the partying lifestyle that attracted me nor was it the overwhelming fame and fortune that comes with being an writer. The main reason for my dream, as cliche as it sounds, was to make stories. Not just any old stories, I want to make the best. I want to create stories that are so unique that you can not put them in a catagory. I want the characters to make you laugh, cry and tear out your hair in anger. I want to bring the fantasy world, that I have been so often told that I live in, and share it with the world...but if that fails I may become a fireman.

    Chapter 1

On a bitterly cold morning in this darkest of winter months the dawn was just a hint of grey above the streetlights when Alex Wood woke up. He tried to haul himself out of his warm cocoon but his head fell back against his pillow. Then he thought of his daughter. She would never get out of bed of her own accord. Alex shuffled across the bedroom and made for the bathroom, where he splashed his face with icy water. He shivered, staring at his face in the mirror, water still dripping from his nose. That nose was sharp and with his fine features, Alex had once been considered very handsome. Now his face was blurred with weariness and stress. His once clear blue eyes were now sunken and bloodshot, his slender face hollow and gaunt. Even the wavy brown hair, which all the girls used to love to run their fingers through, was thinning and fast receding.

Alex dressed hastily and went to wake his daughter. He knocked on the door, knowing she wouldn’t answer. He pushed the door open, to be confronted with the usual sight; his daughter, wrapped in three layers of pyjamas, star-fished across the bed. How is that even comfortable?

Get up, Zara! Time for school

Zara didn’t move, didn’t even open her eyes. Five more minutes, Dad.

Nope. Get up or I drag you up. Your choice.

Zara groaned. Alright. If I have to. She lifted her head, her glossy red hair a tangled mess, and slowly began to get dressed.

They sat together at the kitchen table, silently chewing at the knock-off cereal they always ate. They were both already wearing their outdoor coats and their hands shook with cold.

Dad, why’s it so cold in here? Zara asked finally.

Its winter, sweetie, it does that at this time of year, Alex said. Zara rolled her eyes. Alex knew she didn’t like sarcasm; it made her feel like he was treating her as a child. He had tried speaking to her as if she were an adult — after all, she was fifteen — but he couldn’t help it. Despite growing older and more beautiful every day, she was still his little girl. The little girl he used to read stories to, whose hair he used to put flowers in and the little girl that used to have tea parties with her teddy bear.

You know what I mean — why don’t you fix the fucking heater? she complained.

Hey! Watch the language, Alex snapped. And winter will be gone soon. If it gets too unbearable, we’ll get one, I suppose.

Dad, come on! We’re sat in our coats eating breakfast and we’re still freezing. It’s like minus two degrees out there. I am pretty sure I saw a yeti the other day.

Alex chuckled; he couldn’t help seeing himself in her. He looked at the clock: 7:30. It was time to leave. Alex got up and laid a cold hand on her cold cheek. Okay, you’re right. Just give me a few weeks and we can look at getting the heater fixed.

Zara’s face lit up with delight. Yay! I can finally get out of the shower without turning into a snowman. She
