About this ebook

Mickey should have known better than to get involved with one of the most ancient and secretive Secret Societies in Britain, but he is under orders from his boss, Captain Gibson, to attend a Swearing-In ceremony for his friend Neil, who is, in fact, American. Maybe because of this, the event doesn't end well and Neil disappears. Mickey rushes back to Gibson for orders, but something seems to have happened. Mickey is ordered off the case. So what happened to Neil? Where has he gone? What happened to him. No one is talking. Everybody seems intimated and afraid. Mickey, distraught, is forced back on his own resources, but, as the extent of the cover-up becomes apparent, he soon realises the extent to which the Sacred Society penetrates all of British culture, right to the top. Well then, Mickey reasons, I'll have to take my concerns up there, but it is a fruitless quest and merely gets him in trouble with his superiors. It is only when those authorities try the same trick on him that the forces of repression realise what they have done - they have unleased a demon, and it's not something the can possibly control. Not ever.

Mike Scantlebury

Mike Scantlebury is my author name, which I chose once I'd decided to use my real name on the outside of books. I was born in the South West of England, but after a lot of roaming, found a new billet in the North West, across the river from Manchester (England). I've written dozens of books and you can find them on the shelves of online bookstores everywhere. They're mostly in the world of Romance and the smaller world of Crime Fiction and Mysteries. Mostly, the novels are like the great Colossus and straddle both sides of the stream. The thing that makes me interesting is that I also sing and write songs and you can find them on social media and the corners of The Web. Which is pretty good. I'm a bit old for the internet, really. Happier with an abacus

    I was under orders.

If I hadn’t been - if Captain Gibson hadn’t actually told me I needed to be there - I  don't know how anyone could have persuaded me to put my bare foot in the pool of water in the centre of the sacred Temple of the New Man. Even though we’d been told it was all about the most important part of the ceremony. Oh, and there were eight of us doing it, at the time, and only two of us were spies. The rest were clean young men hoping to climb the corporate ladder and get promotion in the City of London. Well. as the man once said: there's safety in numbers.

The occasion was the inauguration of our contact Neil Larkey into this most exclusive and important of Secret Societies. Not that I'm a member, but the Exalted Amalgamation of Free Men goes back to medieval times in England, and is a great way to get on in this country, I'm told. You can meet people and gain influence. In our business - the Intelligence Services - it's even a way to get promotion. Also, since Neil is an American, it was a
