THE CATS’ LAND
Ana Folhadela
Translated by Bianca B. Rosa
THE CATS’ LAND
Once upon a time there was a land of cats. It’s the cats’ land. It’d been thought by cats, and by cats was built and habituated. There were broad roads and large gardens, to bathe in sunlight. There were heated and cushioned buildings, comfortable, for the Winter. There were fountains that sprouted clear and fresh water, splashing and humidifying the Summer air. There were balls and pens and spools of thread, which the small one rolled and jumped over, in blissful bolts. There were mounds and hills and highs and lows, slides and ramps to climb up and down. There was food and there was slumber and there was awakening and there were games and there was calm. And there was peace. And so the days passed, which happy cats lived and rejoiced, like their parents and grandparents had had lived and rejoiced and how they expected their future offspring to live and rejoice.
Until one day a boat arrived. It’s seen from afar, in the sea, with sky cutting sails, pushed by the wind.
