I stopped reading the series half way through the second book because there’s nothing sexy for me when a man spanks his woman without her consent because she didn’t stay at the house when he told her to. I like my alpha hero’s to earn their woman’s respect not punish it out of her.
I also found that the author’s tendency to switch from present tense to past tense during steamy scenes really ruined the effect.

Chapter One

Kelsey

The gas tank was damn near empty again. I gripped the steering wheel of my shitty hand-me-down Ford Explorer and pulled into the next gas station. The sun was already setting, and I hadn’t even gotten as far as the bar in town.

I shoved the fuel pump into the tank and clicked the holder in place. Maybe I could get in two more spots to check tonight if I hurried. After picking up the map from inside the car, I looked it over. All the x’s and circles made it look more like a treasure map than a Google printout of Kane sugar County.

But it really was a treasure map. To me it was anyway. At the end of it, the large X that remained elusive to me would have my son. Darren, my asshole of an ex, would be there too, but I couldn’t focus on that. I needed to keep my focus on finding my son. Darren may have taken him from me, ran off and led me on a wild goose chase all over Southern California, but I would find them. And I would have my boy with me again.

Just thinking about him made the hair stand up on my neck. What if he was scared? What if Darren wasn’t taking good care of him? They’d been gone almost a full year, anything could have happened to them – to Logan. I couldn’t care less if something happened to Darren, so long as my boy was safe.

The gas pump clicked off, and I put it away, then closed up the cap on the car before sliding into the front seat, ready to take off again. I pulled up the map on my phone, checking the exact route to Devils Hell. A bar just outside the city limits. Not that the small town I’d been driving through could really be called a city.

I rechecked my phone and pulled out of the station. Devil’s Hell didn’t exactly sound like a bar-and-grill, but I hoped to hell they had food. I could use something to eat. Driving all day, I’d skipped eating. I need to get a motel room too. I’d spent a whole day on the road, and again nothing to show for it.

No one saw Darren, at least that’s what they kept telling me. I had every town, every one of his little hot spots marked on my map. Surely he’d stopped at one of them over the past few months. He wasn’t exactly a man of many means. He needed to get cash somewhere. And so, did I.

After spending the day searching, I’d need to spend at least a few hours the next day working. When I’d first taken a job making graphic designs for a small startup publishing house, I’d looked at it as a way to stay home with Logan. Now, it was the only thing keeping me from starving while I tracked down my asshole ex and my son.

Devil’s Hell came into view, and I blew out a long breath. Definitely not a bar-and-grill. I pulled into the lot, taking note of the long line of motorcycles parked along the front of the bar, and found a spot near the rear.

Darren wasn’t a fan of biker clubs. Scared him mostly because he never knew if they were trying to screw him over or if he could trust them. Which I now see as ironic as Darren could never be trusted. If he’d had an honest job, he wouldn’t have to worry about that crap. I never fully understood what the hell he did. He left our one-bedroom apartment every day and came home at night with money. At first, it had seemed exciting, and then when Logan came around, it just made me feel taken care of.

But the money began to trickle in, he was coming home later and later, and some weekends he wouldn’t come home at all. I had asked him what he was doing – about his job. And he’d nearly broken my jaw.

I shook the memory away. I couldn’t think about his temper. Not while he had my son. My three-year-old who made noise, who didn’t always quiet down when told. Would Darren harm him? Hit him when he wouldn’t settle down for a nap? Was Darren even giving him naps? Regular meals? Living on the road wasn’t a place for a
