Chapter One
Sadie
Micah somehow managed to look even more dangerous in my bedroom, and I was acutely aware of the fact that I was standing only a few feet away from him, dressed in nothing more than a flimsy robe. Surprised to see me?
Considering that a little more than twelve hours ago you didn’t even know I existed? Yeah, a little surprised,
I replied, pulling the robe around me tighter. You didn’t seem to be in much of a hurry to see me again when I left your office last night.
That was before I got the intel on you,
Micah told me. He glanced around my room like he was sizing it up, and I wondered just what criteria he used to judge it. Once Manny found out about you, I figured I could use a bit more information straight from the source.
What have you found out?
My mind reeled over the possibilities. What could someone like Micah Rintley have found out about me in less than twenty-four hours? What kind of resources did he have? Who had he been talking to?
I know you work at First Savings and Trust,
Micah said, a gleam in his bright, cold eyes. What do you do there?
I’m just an administrative assistant,
I said, shaking my head. I don’t handle any of the money—just run of the mill stuff.
But you work with the actual bankers, don’t you?
I looked at Micah more closely.
Yeah,
I admitted. Why? What does this have to do with me getting your money back?
Tell me about them.
Micah sat down on the edge of my bed and I immediately felt uncomfortable. But then, it wasn’t as if there were a lot of places in my room to sit—and Micah seemed to be interested in a long conversation.
I only really work with about half a dozen of the bankers,
I said, shrugging.
So tell me about them,
Micah repeated, more firmly.
What do you want to know? I mean—names, addresses, what they do in the bank?
That’s a start,
Micah said.
There’s Jack Harrow, Nate Blanchard, Paul Rothkin, and Harold Neems,
I said.
How old are they?
I frowned; that was an odd question to ask—but then, all of the questions coming from Micah were odd.
Jack and Nate are about thirty, maybe thirty-five,
I said. Paul is forty, Harold is forty-two.
Single, married?
Jack and Nate are seeing people, Harold is divorced, Paul is married.
Micah pressed his lips together, thinking, and I couldn’t help but keep wondering what he wanted that kind of information for.
What do they do in the bank? Just regular management stuff, or are they responsible for accounts?
Harold is in charge of new accounts for business, and Nate works with him; Jack is in wealth management, Paul is in personal accounts.
Micah’s eyes widened and I saw the briefest hint of a smile on his face.
Do they take clients out?
I shrugged. Jack does, and Nate usually goes to dinner with clients. Sometimes Harold takes bigger fish out on the town for dinners—pricey places with cigar bars and thirty-year-old scotch.
Micah nodded slowly. I’d seen some of the receipts; I’d had to file them and submit them to accounting for reimbursement or other things.
You’ve seen the kinds of places they usually take clients out to?
I shrugged.
I mean, I’m sort of the gopher for them, so yeah,
I admitted. Micah smiled slowly. I realized that he was looking me up and down, and once again I felt acutely aware of the fact that I was only not naked by a technicality; all that kept me from being fully exposed to the big boss was a thin layer of fabric that wasn’t even really properly closed. My skin was still damp underneath the robe, and I hadn’t bothered to dry my hair all that thoroughly.
You said there were about half a dozen people—you only gave me four names,
Micah said.
The other two in the department aren’t really big folks,
I said. It’s Ken and Liam; they don’t deal with clients though.
How many clients do the other guys usually handle? How often do they take on new clients, or at least—how often do they take their clients out?
I thought about it for a moment, trying to put a little bit of distance between myself and Micah, almost instinctively. I hated the sight of him sitting on my bed, hated the fact that he seemed to take up way more space in the room than a human being should be capable of.
I mean—they’re always looking for new clients,
I said. One or another of them is out with clients at least once a week each.
Micah nodded, looking—for a second—even more pleased, and I felt even more uncomfortable than before. Why did he want to know about my coworkers? I fidgeted, feeling uncomfortable, and caught the movement of Micah’s eyes toward the hem of my robe. He was definitely just as aware of the fact that there was not much keeping me from being naked.
Which departments did you say they worked in again?
I resisted the urge to smile. As uncomfortable as I was with Micah in my room, only a few feet away from my almost-naked self, the fact that he was distracted by my near-naked state was actually a little thrilling. Maybe if I play my cards right, I can get him to knock off a little more of Chris’ debt, I thought. It wasn’t likely I’d be able to talk him into getting rid of another thousand, but maybe a few hundred? And every bit that I didn’t have to go from one address to another collecting was worth the risk—wasn’t it?
To my surprise, I felt my body starting to heat up at the idea of seducing Micah. I tried to tell myself that it was just because I had—I thought—a little bit of power over Micah, that it was the thrill of that, and not because I had any kind of attraction toward Micah himself.
I fidgeted again, letting the hem of my robe shift a little bit, and Micah looked again, not even quite realizing that I hadn’t answered his question. I told him again, slowly, what departments the guys I worked with were involved in; but really I was watching him. I could see the ridge forming at the front of his pants—I could see the look in his eyes. He wanted me. I made myself move a little closer to him, and I caught the sound of Micah’s breath just barely hitching in his throat. He definitely wanted me. Maybe I could make that my advantage? I met Micah’s gaze and loosened my robe just slightly. I was wondering why you were here...
I leaned toward him, letting my robe fall just a
