    Father, I do not wish to go. Adelena crossed her arms over her chest, the blue and gold brocade wrinkling under the new pressure. A single brow arched high with her refusal.

    With puckered lips, the King of Calaphine leaned back in his plush chair. The dancing light from the fire brought a warm tone to his cheeks, making him look healthier than he had in months. His white-speckled brows rose a fraction of an inch. You do not have a choice, Adelena. It is my command that you go. The King of Magonia has sent word to all the kingdoms in Saleres that his son has agreed to wed, but only to a princess of the highest quality. You are one such princess.

    Adelena was able to resist the urge to roll her eyes because of her governess’s teachings. She sank onto the stool next to her father’s chair, heavy silk skirts pooling over her feet as she gripped his arm with her well-manicured hands. "Surely, Father, you do not want me to marry a man who calls for us like chattel? ‘A princess of the highest quality’—it is an insult! Perhaps he should put forth higher quality for me to judge. My sweet sister should be thankful she is not old enough to be married."
