About this ebook
A stunning collection of short stories about the intersection of family, culture, and food in the lives in teens, from bestselling and critically acclaimed authors, including Sandhya Menon, Anna-Marie McLemore, and Rin Chupeco.
A shy teenager attempts to express how she really feels through the pastries she makes at her family’s pasteleria. A tourist from Montenegro desperately seeks a magic soup dumpling that can cure his fear of death. An aspiring chef realizes that butter and soul are the key ingredients to win a cooking competition that could win him the money to save his mother’s life.
Welcome to Hungry Hearts Row, where the answers to most of life’s hard questions are kneaded, rolled, baked. Where a typical greeting is, “Have you had anything to eat?” Where magic and food and love are sometimes one in the same.
Told in interconnected short stories, Hungry Hearts explores the many meanings food can take on beyond mere nourishment. It can symbolize love and despair, family and culture, belonging and home.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was not what I expected, in a good way. The diversity of characters, stories and plot lines is incredible. The reader is transported to different cultures with their delicious food and cultural values. Yet, the reader (no matter the background) can relate to the characters. Fitting in, dealing with grief, complicated family drama, etc. I definitely approve of this anthology!!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Heartwarming and charming foodie read! This is great as a side read, very sweet and cute! 4 ⭐️

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/54.5 stars! I was pleasantly surprised by this anthology. It is true that anthologies are mixed bags; there are always going to be some stories you love and some you don't care for, but in this one I'm happy to say that for me, the former outweighed the latter!
This is such a great multicultural and heartfelt read, and it had me wishing Hungry Heart Row was a real place I could visit to try all the food and meet the people. Since the stories all take place in the same area, the characters are mentioned in each others' stories, so there is a pretty big cast. I rated each story separately for my own personal enjoyment and remembrance, and then thought to add a brief snippet of what the story is about.
Rain - 5 stars. About grief.
Kings and Queens - 3 stars. About gangs and revenge. This was one of those stories that didn't quite seem to fit with all the others. Definitely not a happy one.
The Grand Ishq Adventure - 5 stars. About secret identities and living bravely. The twist was expected but oh so enjoyable! I'm sure I had a silly grin on my face while reading.
Sugar and Spite - 4 stars. About magic and bullying. I really liked this one, but it was in second person point of view, which was weird and took away from the story.
Moments to Return - 4 stars. About the fear of death and learning to live with it. This was a really short one. I would have liked more.
The Slender One - 5 stars. About belonging, and family, and new friends that might become more.
Gimme Some Sugar - 5 stars. About pushing through anxiety.
The Missing Ingredient - I cannot even rate this one. This had me literally going "WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK DID I JUST READ?!?" This is the one that completely got the book off track - there's always that one story that DOESN'T FIT with the anthology. This is that one. It is super dark, and I am not ok.
Hearts à la Carte - 4 stars. About falling for someone and conflict in the relationship. There is a superhero and villain involved, which was unexpected.
Bloom - 4 stars. About the past and the future, and scars.
A Bountiful Film - 5 stars. About new homes and new friendships.
Side Work - 5 stars. About forgiveness and flirting.
Panadería ~ Pastelería - 4 stars. About acceptance and the right words.
If you've been thinking about reading this one, give it a shot! I really enjoyed most of the stories.1 person found this helpful

Being a big foodie, I totally loved this book. In fact, to make my reading experience even more memorable, I decided to read only one story a day (oh boy! it was difficult!)
Even though the stories are interconnected, each of them was special and unique in their own way. Most importantly it is a book which fills you both with warmth and hunger to try out some new food. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I would absolutely recommend this book. The stories are captivating and akin to enjoying a warm bowl of delicious soup.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Since this an anthology, I will rate the stories individually. Overall though, I enjoyed most of the stories in this collection and I loved how they all connected in some way. Usually, it was by mentioning characters that appear in other stories or the restaurants. Not to mention the themes of each were either food or love, or in some cases, both. Not all the stories were fluffy, some were kind of weird to be honest, but again, I enjoyed most of them.

- The Slender One by Caroline Tung Richmond – 4 stars
- Gimme Some Sugar by Jay Coles – 4 stars
- The Missing Ingredient by Rebecca Roanhorse – 2.5 stars
- Hearts à la Carte by Karuna Riazi – 3 stars

- A Bountiful Film by S. K. Ali – 4.5 stars
- Side Work by Sara Farizan – 3.5 stars
- Panaderia ~ Pasteleria by Anna-Marie McLemore – 2 stars
Overall, there were three or four stories that I didn’t care for much. My least two favorites of the collection were Panaderia and Sugar and Spite, I just could not get into them at all. The Missing Ingredient was good up until the end when it took a weird/creepy turn that just ruined it for me.
My favorites from the collection were Rain, Kings and Queens, The Grand Ishq, Moments to Return, and A Bountiful Film. To me, those stories make the book worth reading and those are the ones that have stuck with me since finishing it.
So even though some stories I gave a 2 or 3 star rating to, I’d say the book is overall 5 stars. The individual ratings are just based on how I liked the stories. That’s not to say someone else won’t think they’re worth 5 stars, because the writing of all of them is great. If you haven’t checked out this book yet, you definitely should!
