About this ebook
Paul Wright
Since 1998 I have written many non-fiction print books for other publishers including subjects as varied as military vehicles and coachbuilders, but my specialist subject is the history of the London taxi. After self-publishing a ninth title through my company, Earlswood Press I then took the work of other authors, and published another of my own print books under this imprint. I have ceased to publish the works of other authors and now publish my own work exclusively. I'm married to Karen, and together we enjoy social dancing, walking, swimming and travel

JOSHUA
INTRODUCTION
Joshua is the first book in the section of the Old Testament commonly called the Books of History (Joshua-Esther).
The name Joshua means the Lord is salvation
and is related to other Old Testament names such as Hoshea (the original name of Joshua; cp. Num. 13:16), Hosea and Isaiah. A shortened form of Joshua (Hebrew Yehoshua) is Jesus (Yeshua).
In spite of its title, the book of Joshua is not a biography of Joshua, one of ancient Israel's most important leaders. Rather, the book tells the story of how God gave Israel, His chosen people, their own land, just as he had promised to do over four hundred years earlier (Gen. 15:15–21). While Joshua was Israel's leader during this time, the main character of the book, as is the case throughout the Bible, is God. With God directing events, the book of Joshua is optimistic about Israel's future in their new land. Joshua begins with a daunting challenge but ends with the quiet assurance that the task at hand, the conquest and settlement of Canaan, would be accomplished in full.
AUTHOR, AUDIENCE, AND DATE OF WRITING
There are more questions than answers regarding the authorship of Joshua. Because the book is anonymous, it is also impossible to pinpoint either the date which the book was written or the identity of its original readers.
Early Jewish and Christian tradition held that the book of Joshua was written by Joshua himself. This tradition is based on statements found in Joshua 8:32 and 24:26. However, these verses say only that Joshua wrote out certain things specifically relating to the covenant which God had made with Israel, not the entire book of Joshua as
