    Chapter 1

The elf costume was seriously embarrassing. The play was in its second week of the four week run and I was exhausted. I had taken on the job of being Santa’s mortifyingly cute little elf at a department store on 5th Ave. I needed extra money to go home for Christmas; and since this was the only job that would allow me to be in the play and work weird hours I had to take it. The costume was a short red velvet dress with white fluffy trim, green stockings, and little red booties with tiny bells on the toes. I didn't think I would actually have to wear anything like this… ever. But it did lend some Christmas spirit to my otherwise boring un-Christmasy life.

It was a good thing I had a knack with kids growing up in such a large family. Most of the kids were excited to see Santa; but some of them, like the younger ones, well let's just say there were some great Christmas shots that left no doubt in my mind that someday they would be used as blackmail by their parents.

I spotted a familiar face across the department store as I was setting one tiny screaming tot on Santa's lap. It was Jake, and he looked pretty hot in his coat and scarf. He was the perfect California boy with his beach blonde hair, blue eyes and pearly white smile. It was no wonder his sister, Elle, was so beautiful. Good looks obviously ran in the family. Jake unfortunately recognized me in my horrid costume, waved, and walked over to Santa’s little house. I motioned to Jake with my finger to give me a second and asked Santa if I could take a five-minute break as the line had died down a lot.

Kylie! He paused for a minute to laugh, Santa’s little elf, huh? Jake said giving me the once over. His expression said it all.

I laughed, "Uh, yeah. I can't wait to get out of this
