    Chapter One

My name is Jeremy Baseborn I am loyal servant to Egron the Magnificent, King of Wizards, ruler of distant galaxies, and mentor of Jorah Crow. I sometimes refer to Jorah as brother Crow. He is not my brother in blood but in arms.

I remember the first time I saw baby Jorah, all that long black hair. I held him by the fire in our cave while Master Egron fetched the portly Elina Robin to keep him well- nourished and quiet. As an infant brother Jorah had no patience, but how many newborns do?

Elina had five children, Master Egron selected her as baby Jorah’s day of birth neared. She raised him and loved him as her own for five years. All the while my Master watched over them making sure Jorah, Elina and the rest of her brood were warm, safe and well fed.

Dare not evoke the rage of Egron the Great. He is all-powerful, he’s an invincible Wizard of war. And also generous and tender-hearted. When he found a half-starved filthy runt wondering in the woods he took him and raised him more like his son than his servant. I Jeremy Baseborn was that starving five- year- old child.

I was left in the woods. Abandoned, a whore for a mother and the son of a dozen fathers all bastards just like me. Food for wolves. Fate made sure I was reminded of my bastard status by a dying peasant’s last words. I never knew what baseborn meant. The village folks always called me Jeremy Baseborn. Even Master Egron calls me Jeremy Baseborn.  The peasant informed me just as I run him through with a pitchfork, that baseborn was another word for bastard.

His words did hurt me, but I think his pain was greater. Now he’s a dead peasant does anyone remember his name? Regardless, Egron has allowed me to serve him for four hundred years. I have seen far more than most could imagine.

Miracles, calamities, warfare, the destruction of other worlds, the death of kings, of masters and great warriors. Still, I could always tell something was missing from Jorah.

His face called beautiful by most woman and some men began to show lines. He was sad and did not know why. Jorah had many women but never married. Master Egron noticed too. He knew what was missing. And I believe he searched until he found the perfect woman for Jorah.

He found Nina Grove.  A simple farm girl broken-hearted and confused she still believes in love but is fearful of being hurt. Master Egron made a mistake I believe. There are secrets he keeps from Jorah. If Jorah ever learns what happened long ago he will surely challenge Master Egron.

May that day never come. Now about Nina Grove from this river town called Point Pleasant. Located where two rivers join. The old town has a bloody battleground history. Holly Dupree, Nina’s cousin lives on the other side of the river in the Ohio country. She has a part to play in all this.

There is a curse on this area. Though it seems peaceful on the streets and the townsfolk are friendly I can see why we were drawn to here. The blood of the innocent stains the ground. Tragic events, disease, murder, and mayhem.

Jorah and I decided to apply for work on Nina’s farm, which is up the river from Point Pleasant. The foreman seemed rather simple but plain spoken. He asked if we had any experience and how long we had been in town. We both told him we came to town because we heard he was hiring. He hired us on the spot.

We have to fit in. The longer we are here the more we will become like the folks who live in this time. From the nineteenth century to the twenty-first century there are differences. Pollution of the air, water, soil. More disease and the stench of chemicals and toxins.

When we first arrive the heartbeats, we can hear the heartbeats of those around us. We sense everything odors, the taste of the water, food and even the air. We become less sensitive after a few days.

My Master prepares us, well he prepares me before we move through time. I’m just the bastard servant Jorah may prepare himself or may not need to be prepared. Nina Grove is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. I should expect that she’s for Jorah.

It was a steamy, sticky, miserable day. The swampy Ohio country sweltered under the summer sun, the humidity almost unbearable over the Ohio Valley.  Holly Dupree, twenty- five, worked at Walmart. She was looking forward to a week off work and a trip to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.  Holly’s cousin Nina invited her to spend a week with her on her farm. They planned to venture from there to the Smoky mountains and rent a cabin.

Nina Grove was twenty-three, Nina and Holly grew up doing everything together.  They lived only a few minutes apart, they both worked at Walmart, they both came from broken homes. Holly’s dad left when she was ten years old and Nina’s dad left when she was twelve. Holly had blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes and Nina’s a dirty blonde with big brown eyes. They are both five feet, five inches tall.

They shared good times and bad times, both women suffered through painful breakups. Holly with her high school sweetheart Josh Wood, and Nina with Mateo Kerns a drifter who worked on their farm for two years. Nina knew Mateo had a past, but his smile and the way she felt when he kissed her helped her forget about his past. Actually, she fell for him the first time she saw him. She got up one morning and cooked breakfast for him; he was gone. Mateo left a letter that said he needed space; he felt pressured, he would be back, and he would forever love her. Josh sent Holly an email saying he was in love with another woman.

The women shared a tough year. They were looking to have fun and date casual. Nina granted one of her friends a few nights of pleasure. He was so sweet to her and loved to please her. She knew he would do anything for her and worship her. He had been in her friend zone for five years. Holly hurt so bad it took her months to think about sex without getting sick to her stomach. She would cry about it Nina would hold her, tell her she was going to be okay. She did sleep with a guy who worked at the market with her. He was sweet, but she was not in love with him.

They planned to meet at Nina’s place and head to Tennessee from there. It would be about a six-hour drive from her home to Pigeon Forge.  Nina loved her new Jeep and could not wait to hit the road. Though they worked at Walmart they both had college degrees. Nina had a degree in accounting and Holly studied nursing.

Their jobs gave them play money, they did not have expenses like their co-workers. Nina lived at home on the family farm and Holly’s mom rented her a condo. Though Nina rarely saw her dad, he wrote a check for her new Jeep. He wrote checks for her tuition for anything she needed but he never visited, and he rarely called. Holly’s mom run a successful business. She had a partner who became her lover. Liz never said much to Holly about Claudia, and Holly never asked.

It was Thursday afternoon, Nina decided she would call Holly around 6:30. Holly could come over and spend the night, they planned to leave early Friday morning.  Thursday was payday for their workers. Nina always took the money for payroll
