The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (Book Analysis) - Bright Summaries
PSEUDONYM OF ENGLISH AUTHOR J.K. ROWLING
Born in Gloucestershire in 1965.
Notable works:
The Silkworm (2014), crime novel
Career of Evil (2015), crime novel
Lethal White (2018), crime novel
Robert Galbraith is the pseudonym of J.K. Rowling, who is most famous for her Harry Potter fantasy book series. She was born in Gloucestershire in 1965 and wrote stories as a child before studying French and Classics at Exeter University. Her earlier career took her to Portugal teaching English as a foreign language. After returning to the UK and struggling to make ends meet for herself and her daughter, she began writing what would become the Harry Potter series in cafés. By the turn of the century she was a hugely successful children’s author.
Rowling decided to publish The Cuckoo’s Calling and the subsequent three books in the Strike series under a pseudonym so that the publication of her crime novels would be without the baggage of her fame. While sales of The Cuckoo’s Calling predictably skyrocketed when her name was attached to it, it had actually performed well both in sales and in reviews under the name Robert Galbraith. Before Rowling’s authorship was revealed, Robert Galbraith was described as an ex-Royal Military Police investigator, much like Cormoran Strike, the protagonist of the novels. Rowling has continued to publish subsequent novels in the Strike series under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, although the inside jackets of the books do acknowledge Rowling’s authorship.
