Introduction

Cookbooks instruct us on how to prepare delicious, appetizing, and hopefully healthy meals. You-Tube videos are available to give us step by step instruction on just about everything imaginable, and the Bible is here to teach us what it means to belong to God, how to be saved by Jesus, and why these things are so important.

Using a guidebook or instruction manual is considered completely normal when it comes to cooking, playing a game, putting a bicycle together, learning math or grammar, and just about everything else. So why is it we try to ‘do’ religion and faith without a guidebook?

I’ve never heard of anyone over the age of four who tried to make up their own rules to checkers because they didn’t like the ones that traditionally go with the game. I don’t know of anyone who insists on leaving chocolate out of a chocolate cake and still calling it a chocolate cake. And even though there are a few people out there who try (and possibly) succeed in putting together a bicycle without the instructions, they certainly wouldn’t leave the pedals off because they didn’t want to take the time to put them on. So again I ask the question: Why do so many people try to claim the name of Christian without knowing what it means to be one and without truly and intimately knowing who it is
