Ladies and gentlemen, next up to the stage, please welcome: Ginger Atwater! The room filled with a thunderous applause and the sporadic, overzealous high-pitched whistle.

Hello, hello, hello! How are y'all doin’ tonight? To-night, you know, for me there is only night. How does the day look? I wouldn’t know. I haven’t seen the sun since before I started doing comedy. There was a dull murmur through the crowd instead of the uproar of laughter she had hoped for. Ok, that joke didn’t work, Ginger made a mental note not to use that for prime gigs. She squinted to look out past the blinding spotlights and through the dimly lit club shroud in a fog of cigarette smoke. Clinking glasses and throaty coughs echoed against the painted brick walls of the musty basement establishment.

Before stepping foot behind the mic that night, Ginger stood off stage with three other comics, all male, preparing to dazzle the patrons with their routines. She flipped her hair over, allowing gravity to work its magic, and brushed it down toward the sticky floor to achieve the sought after full-body style of the era before whipping it back upright. It was her first time performing at Legacy Underground, but from what she’d heard from her peers, it was best used as a practice spot.

So, a deep, gruff voice beckoned the group’s attention. Ginger looked up and her breath caught in her throat. A tall, handsome man with thick hair and a full beard holding a clipboard spoke. All the men she had met so far in her industry were neurotic or not even worth a second glance. So, she wondered: Who is this statuesque stranger? First on the roster, he continued, is Michael. Mikey, where are you? A lanky man in striped bell-bottoms and a red leather jacket held up his cigarette. Ok, hey man, it’s been a while. In about five minutes I’ll go on stage and announce you. Next is a… Ginger?

Present! she beamed, bouncing nervously on the balls of her feet, and held out her hand.

A little bubble of energy, this one, he took her hand in his and held it tight. "I’m Johnny, the MC here at the Underground, nice to meet you."

You, too. With a hint of reluctance, he dropped her hand and turned back to the list on his clipboard. We have five of the officially chosen on the roster so far, but one guy is a little late. After you all go on, we’ll open up to the amateurs, but until then, you get one free sandwich with fries and a Coke. Personally, I think you should wait to eat until after your set so you don’t barf, but what do I know, I’ve only been doing this for eight years.

Confidence fading with the lack of even chuckles, Ginger powered through
