- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I received a copy of this novella from the publisher via NetGalley.Sir Barnaby Ware travels to visit his friend Marcus Cosgrove. He is nervous because he betrayed Marcus by sleeping with his first wife and Marcus rebuffed him when he asked for forgiveness on a previous occasion. Now Marcus has made the first overture towards him in a bid to restore their friendship. Miss Merryweather, a distant relative of the second Lady Cosgrove, is staying with them and is intrigued by Barnaby. Miss Merryweather is about to turn 25 and on her birthday will be able to choose from a list of supernatural gifts. It become apparent that readers of the first novella in this series are aware that Lady Cosgrove had the same opportunity and chose the ability to change into the form of other animals (or the form of a man). I quite enjoyed this story on the whole, although it required a lot of suspension of disbelief. The characters were universally likeable and the cave scenes were unusual and interesting. I struggled a bit with the portrayal of the first Lady Cosgrove, who wasn't there to defend herself and who seemed to be taking more than her fair share of the blame for her and Barnaby's adultery. In fact, Marcus seemed ready to view Barnaby as pretty much entirely blameless. I would recommend reading these novellas in order.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5April 1807 and Sir Barnaby Ware is near Woodhuish Abbey, to face a man he has betrayed. Just before he turns to go back he meet Miss Anne Merryweather - a female who says and sees what others don't - he continues on to meet Marcus, Lord Cosgrove. Can Barnaby be redeemed and can he ever forgive himself.
A delightful novella, possibly my first story with a hint of magic, with likeable characters which I wanted to read more about.
