- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Nick Medea, is also known as St. George, yes, THE St. George, who slayed the dragon. And he has been having to live down that decision every day for the last 16 centuries. When Nick slayed the dragon, 16 centuries ago, he didn’t know what he was doing, and certainly didn’t know what the dragon was actually doing. But he did find out afterward. The dragon guarded the gateway between the human world and the world of the faerie. And somehow the two were blended together, leaving Nick the immortal guardian of the gateway, with the sentient dragon living in his head. One of the bonuses, is that he can use the dragons features to help him in his duties. Such as the dragons vision, or hearing, or healing ability. He can also shapeshift into the dragon, either in part in or in full. However, while the dragon keeps Nick alive, as it continues his own existence, it wants to be free of Nick, or at least be the one in control. So Nick has to be careful how much he depends on the dragon and to remember to never trust it more than necessary. The gateway is currently in Chicago, or more accurately just off shore in Lake Michigan. It is during prohibition and the gangs are running wild. And strange and violent murders are happening, some of the bodies are also a little ‘off’ even with the mutilation. Nick is asked to look at one and sees it’s a high born faerie, and as powerful as they are, someone was able to vivisect this one.Turns out a horror from Chicago’s past, has come back to haunt the great city, and plans on taking it over. It also has plans for the land of faerie behind the gate, plans the fae don’t want to see come to fruition. It’s Nick’s job to make sure the evil is put down, once and for all. I enjoyed this book quite a bit and I do plan on finding the first one, Black City Saint, and read that one as well. This falls very neatly into dark/urban fantasy genre and I do tend to enjoy them a lot. This one was done pretty well, and did feel like a decent prohibition Chicago as well. I found it to be a fun use of different well known myths and legends and they were merged well.
