    Chapter One

    REALLY,  HE COULDN’T recall when it had first begun or even when he’d first noticed it. He supposed that it had sort of crept upon him slowly and quietly with the utmost stealth. Like a master hunter stalking his victim.

    Sitting back in his chair in the darkened room,  a slight smile tugged at his thin, pale lips. He would push it away, but it wasn’t to be denied. It persisted until he was actually smiling.

    The smile,  a tool to be used only as a means to obtain his needed nourishment,  felt strange on his anemic lips. Even stranger was the desire he felt rising in his chest. He frowned into the gloom. What could it be? What could it mean? But...yes! Yes! It was a desire to laugh!

    He,  who could not remember the last time he had laughed,  felt an almost overpowering urge to do so now. How very particular. With the aid of his superior willpower he suppressed the bothersome urge.

    Yes,  it had most certainly come upon him unawares. He,  whose very existence depended on his being ever alert and conscious of all danger,  had been caught unaware.

    There! There again the urge to jest and joke was asserting itself. Again he had to fight the urge to laugh. It was intolerable! Now the urge was overcome by annoyance.
