    Palmistry has been practiced for thousands of years and its origins stretch back beyond recorded history, as far as we can tell. At different times in that long history it has been seen as a simple, practical form of divination, a mysterious and esoteric practice, a legitimate form of character assessment, a fairground attraction and just about everything else in between!

    The book covers every aspect of Palmistry including the hand shapes, the thumb and fingers, the mounts, lines and minor marks. In each section detailed meanings are given in relation to the elements of the palm and illustrations are provided to clarify the location of specific features.

    Chapter 1

    The History and Practice of Palmistry

    The origins of Palmistry are lost to history but, like many other forms of divination, those origins are likely to be very ancient indeed. Also known by the Greek term chiromancy, the word palmistry simply means divination by the palm. The technique was certainly well known in the Classical world with supporters including Aristotle, Hippocrates and Alexander the Great. However it is likely that the history of palmistry goes much further back in time and it seems to have origins in ancient India. The Hindu sage Valmiki (author the Ramayana) is believed to have composed a book entitled The Teachings of Valmiki Maharishi on Male Palmistry, two thousand years ago, and links between Palmistry and ancient Hindu astrology have also been drawn. From India the practice seems to have spread both East and West and palmistry was practiced in the ancient world in cultures as diverse as those of ancient China and Greece.
