This book is dedicated to my late parents who gave me a great childhood and a foundation of my ceremonies, teachings, oral history and love. Without these strong foundational blocks for my identity and a strong spiritual base, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to receive the gift of my spirituality. Also to my siblings who cared for me and insured I was loved and had fun. Lastly to my husband and daughters and grandchildren, they have been a blessing.

    Introduction

The indigenous people from all over the world have a commonality; it is the connection to the earth and the spirits. Throughout history it has been documented about the great misunderstandings that existed between Native and non-Native people. The reason is most Native people have been and continue to remain spiritual beings. They were careful with choices of behavior and their attitude toward life. They respected life, as well as other life forces such as water, plants, animals, birds, people, the ancestors, Creator and his helpers. Many Native people still live with respect to these other relatives of ours (sun, moon, winds, thunders, etc…). But there are also Native people who have been affected by the colonization and assimilation process and have chosen to let their ancestral teachings and ceremonies go. This was forced mostly with the residential/boarding schools that forbid and tortured any young children who spoke their Native language or practiced their ancestral way of spirituality. The Canadian and American governments made it against the law for Native parents to keep their children at home and teach them these ways of being. These governments would place the parents in jail for not giving their children to the government-funded, church-ran schools. They also tortured or killed adults for practicing their ceremonies and anyone wanting to remain living as their ancestors had or being different then the oppressors. This is the colonization process at its finest. They become the rulers or oppressors and this is still happening through the education system with the whole Eurocentric mentality push on the whole world. Which translates to instead of community thinking, everyone has an individual mentality (me, me, me, I, I, I thinking). What can I get out of doing this or that and then we become very competitive instead of cooperative. Ancestral mentality is about cooperation for survival, a we-mentality; we only succeed if the group succeeds. Many Native people are starting to relearn their ancestors’ ways and beliefs because the western religion or beliefs doesn’t work for many Native and non-Native people. By not working, what I mean is that many Native people have said, I never felt anything when I went to the church or I never felt connected to what was being taught in there. It was confusing and we were taught to be critics about the world around us.

The spiritual relationship for Native people is their connection to the earth, the spirit forces, and how they feel cared for and loved by the Creator through these ceremonies. This responsibility to carry on these ceremonies rests with each generation. It is a cycle, poetry in motion, a cycle that was given to each people and it is meant to continue for the well being of the people, animals, everything on the earth and the unborn. This is the reason that this book was written it’s to explain the importance of respectful understandings. While on the earth our ancestors knew how important our behavior and mentality was to exist with all of life. People walk on this earth and have no idea what is completely surrounding us and affecting our lives. These Life Understandings were given to help people who are in search of more meaning in their lives. There are many people who are walking through life very confused and feeling empty inside, they are disconnected from their spirit, their guide, and the Creator. The fear that has been instilled in so many people through religious rules, judgments, and the education system is very damaging. Fear is what prevents many people from being connected to their spirit. It is a powerful force but can be defeated through their faith, through Love. This is the substance of everyone’s spirit, this is the power, it’s the source of energy, it’s through loving thoughts and feelings that we become powerful beings. This was the powerful gift that the Creator gave to my people through a messenger called the Peacemaker. The power of having a good mind or ganikwiyo is something that my people have been using for many years to stop conflict inside them as well as outside of them. However many of my own people have lost this understanding and now it is only something that we talk about.

The purpose of this book that is different from others on this topic is the unique way that these understandings came and the universal application. The spiritual understandings shared in this book, weren’t given by a person but they were given through spirit, through dreams. These understandings encompass all people and were meant for all people to be able to learn from them. Through dreams, these spirit guides have instructed me to explain what many people don’t understand. The fear and confusion that is inside many of us is like a huge rock that after awhile becomes too much to carry. There are so many people who can’t bring themselves to go and seek the knowledge that will help them to heal. This is why this book was written for those ones because the Creator wants everyone to be able to heal and come away from the fear-based thinking. To have faith that the Creator is in control and if you know what to look for, you will see that he is making everything happen as it is supposed to happen.

In Understanding Life, you will be able to help yourself to heal. These powerful understandings came for a reason and that is to be shared. Telling these dreams has been a fear that I had to overcome because unfortunately many of my people have lost the value of dreams. I know it would not be right to the Creator if I didn’t give the teachings as they were given to me. I was taught that dreams were messages from the Creator and very important, this is what made me write this book. My guide instructed me to write a book with the knowledge they shared with me. She said, there are so many people who are so hurt and damaged that they can’t bring themselves to go seek help, even though you do workshops and conferences, this message is still not reaching those ones. You need to write this book so that these messages will reach them and they can receive the healing they need.

These understandings of life have had such an impact on me that it has been life altering. I have shared them throughout North America at various conferences and gatherings. The healing that happens for the people who hear them are so powerful, that it inspires me to continue to tell them. It doesn’t matter how many times I tell a dream or experience it always impacts me like I’m still there in the experience.

This book has been written for many people who have been looking for a deeper meaning to life. It’s for those people who have been confused, wondering how this world and themselves have gotten so messed up. It is for people who have ever wondered about a force that is ever present in our lives but is not always seen. For some people they have seen movies or TV shows that explain some of these different powers that are not easily explained. There have been many stories, events, and dreams that were shared with me throughout my life about these spiritual beings and I am grateful to those kind people. Because it helped me to know that the spirits or ancestors are everywhere and trying to teach everyone.

There have been many people that I’ve met in my short time on the earth that were so kind and generous with their knowledge and life teachings. Those people I know were put there by the Creator to teach me and help me in my journey. They were put there to teach me how to be and how other people feel when I share my stories and knowledge. For some years I worked teaching about my people’s culture and traditions, just so that others could understand. Today I work as a healer and a speaker about these life understandings so others can see the love from the Creator through their own experiences. I am still very busy with helping people to try to have a better understanding about life and how to enjoy their time on the earth. This book is for people who have confusion in their lives and haven’t found the right answers I know they will find some of those answers to their questions. Through these answers they will find healing and see the love that the Creator has for them.

It is my dreams that have had the most impact on my thinking. They were so real that they still affect me today and probably until I leave the earth, even the ones that I had twenty or thirty years ago or just yesterday. There was much input from my dreams that explained many events that were going on in the world and in my life. This is how I came to trust the Creator and the spirits and to feel secure in what was being shown to me through my dreams. Many times when these dreams would become reality, I would be so amazed but also reassured.

I heard a saying once that What is popular is not always right, and what is right is not always popular. This is true if we accept the new information then we must change the way that we think and feel about a certain situation. Sometimes we act a certain way that everyone has become comfortable with, popular, and so we don’t want to change. When we hear something new it could contradict something that we have believed all of our lives then we begin doubting what has been our truth. This can be very difficult for someone who has enough to deal with just trying to survive in this hustle and bustle that we call life. Just when we think that we have things figured out, we realize that we don’t know everything and we have to change an inner belief and behavior and this can be really difficult. Especially if we feel that we don’t have support with the new behavior that we want to try out. This is when we must make the choice of, do we continue to be and act as we have always or do we choose to become a better or higher self. A more respectful and knowledgeable person or a small fearful, less of a person then what were capable of being.

When we get older or get more education, we have been given this false belief that we are done learning or that we are smarter than most. Wrong, as long as we are alive we are meant to learn, LIFE is the subject and the earth is the classroom and people are part of the lesson we are enrolled in, so we need to pay attention so the lessons can be learned. That is the beauty of each new day, we can become a better person everyday. But if we are convinced that we are done learning then we may miss the important lessons that are being shown and remain the same. I was told that the reason that we look like were dead when we sleep, is because when we lay down at night to sleep, the person you were that day is supposed to die and the new, better improved you is there in the morning. We are all renewed every morning this is the purpose of the sunrise ceremonies. It is to give thanks for the renewal of all of life and to acknowledge the gift in seeing another day to improve ourselves and enjoy what the Creator has given us.

My hope for the reader is to be able to have some healing in their mind, from there to their heart and then their spirit, then demonstrate this great healing with their actions. Once a person is connected to heart, spirit and mind and working in unison, then they are functioning as a healthy human being. Until then, it is only partial and therefore out of balance. This is all that our lives are meant for, is to come to the place of understanding that the Creator loves us with all his being, for he made each and every one of us. We are all here to help one another, not to judge, or to blame, or to gossip it is only to help. This is my way of trying to help so I hope you enjoy these understandings of Life…as much as I have!

    Chapter 1

    In The Beginning

    My Childhood, the Earlier Messages…

My name in the Cayuga language is Gawehogeh, which translates to a flower floating in the water it was given to me when I was a baby in a ceremony at the longhouse. I was raised with the teachings and customs of the Longhouse people from Six Nations. We were given our ceremonies and a traditional way of governing the people. Over one thousand years ago a great messenger named the Peace Maker came to our ancestors to stop warring and to bring an understanding of peace. He gave our people a very powerful message of how we are to conduct ourselves so that we can be a powerful people. The teachings were how to treat people with respect, caring, consideration, and kindness. When our ancestors did this it united our people and we became very powerful because we cared about each other and never had to worry about our safety. The important ingredient to becoming a powerful people is we have to be able to carry a good mind and a good heart. This became more and more difficult with
