Chapter 1
Action!
She ran. The buxom brunette ran until her shoes fell off, until her feet were bloody, until the ragged tree limbs scratching by her had torn off parts of her dress and ripped her hair from her scalp. She was in tatters, but she ran, because the only way to live was to get as far away from the monster on her heels as possible.
The woods around her were dark. Darkness like a night without a moon, a house without a light, a town without electricity or a shred of hope left. The dark helped the thing chasing the girl stay hidden in pursuit, but she could still hear the slow, steady footsteps clomping along the path behind her.
The clouds shifted in the sky and the moon shone down on the field beyond the woods as the girl burst from the tree line with the shape on her heels. She screamed and blood pumped out of the wound where the monster had cut open her face. But still, she ran.
She left a trail of glistening blood through the field, and as she approached the next set of trees, a bubbly, keening wail clawed its way up the back of her throat and came pouring out like vomit.
But she was too slow. The monster grabbed her, bared its ugly, yellow fangs, and pulled her to the ground as it tried to slurp the life out of her.
Cut!
Bee Taylor pulled off her glasses and rubbed her fingers in her eyes. She kept her head down a long moment, until one actress pulled away and helped the other off the ground. She thought of everything she had accomplished, of all she wanted to do yet. And she sighed. This wasn’t working.
What was wrong with that one?
the young, bloody brunette asked.
Bee slipped her glasses back on and met the actress’s eyes. She tried to impart some sense that she had sympathy for her, but it was hard to do when the woman staring back at her sounded like a petulant child. There wasn’t anything wrong with it. It just didn’t feel right.
The actress playing the monster rolled her eyes, then walked past the cameras to a table covered with a pink plastic tablecloth and plastic bowls of precut fruit.
Aren’t you being a little precious?
Bee thumped one hand against her leg in a slow, steady rhythm and stared at the scene. They had already filmed the close-up shots; all they had left was the wide-range, continuous shot of the girl running. It should have been fast, an easy day to knock off early, but something about it felt off, and Bee Taylor didn’t leave things unpolished.
We can’t keep working on a movie we don’t know is going to make any money forever,
the actress whined.
Without taking her eyes off the trees as they shifted in the low wind of the strategically-placed fans, Bee gestured for the woman to move behind her. We don’t have much longer,
she said off-hand. I just have to get this one right, then we can all go home.
How can we get it right if we don’t know what you want?
Bee finally turned to her when the actress put one hand on her leg. Her eyes stayed unfocused too long, and by the time she knew what was happening, the brunette had straddled her lap and thrust her cleavage into Bee’s face. That did it. Something about the actress’s figure disarmed her.
What do you need, Lily?
she asked, her voice softer.
I need to know how many more times you’re going to make me run through these stupid trees. I’m getting scratched for real now.
Bee inspected the arms Lily held up to her and noted that the younger actress was right; there were minute scratches from skinny branches all up and down her limbs. She wrapped her arms around Lily, pulled her close, and kissed her jaw. She inhaled the scent of her. Even though she had been running off and on for hours, she still smelled earthy and clean, and damn, if it wasn’t exactly Bee’s weakness. She planted a kiss on Lily’s mouth, then pulled her back so she could look at her.
I’m sorry. Next take will be the one, I’m almost sure of it. Then we’ll go home, okay?
Lily played with the collar of Bee’s shirt and smirked from under a pile of teased hair with twigs and leaves sticking out of it. And what are you going to give me if it isn’t?
Bee pulled her closer again and stared out at the woods. We’ll figure something out. I’m sure this will be the last take.
An hour later, Lily’s smile was gone even off-camera, and the actress playing the blood-soaked vampire was growling at anyone who looked at her and on the hunt for more refreshments. Bee took off her glasses and rubbed her eyes against a raging headache. The scene was a disaster. The day was a bust. If anything else went wrong, she would have to pack it all up and do it again the next day.
One more time, guys?
she plead. Lily raised a hand to rub at her tears, but Bee called out for her to stop. Use it, okay? Use your pain and frustration. Use your fear that I won’t ever let you away from here.
She looked at the monster and pointed a finger. And you, use your anger. We’ve got this.
If this isn’t the last take, I’m quitting,
called out the actress in the role of the monster.
Bee doubted it, but she nodded her understanding anyway. Letting them think she cared more about them than the movie helped, even if it was dishonest, and even if they eventually figured out she was lying and stopped talking to her. Actors were a dime a dozen.
Let’s get back to it, people.
She waited for everyone to get back into position, for lighting to get back into gear, and for her camera people to give her
