Chapter 1
Lou paced the walls of his cage, peering down the aisle for Sandrine. The aliens had taken her away a long time ago. She hadn’t struggled. Six months ago they’d learned that struggling resulted in bruises, pain stick, and getting taken anyway.
I don’t know why you’re so upset.
Carl lounged on the nest of blankets at the back of his cage like he should have a fishing pole in his hand and be chewing on a piece of straw. He’d draped one corner of a blanket over his dick. Sandrine said it was an effort to hang onto some remnant of control. It couldn’t be doing much to keep him warm. You can’t do anything to help her.
So?
They’re going to offer her the same deal they offered us. Worker, servant, or fighter.
It was the last one that bothered Lou. He’d known Sandrine on Earth, before they were kidnapped. She’d been one of his personal training clients and she frequented the bar where he was a bouncer. Clever and strong with curves in all the right places. Bright, hardworking, focused. If she hadn’t stayed after closing to talk to him, she wouldn’t be here now. They had been standing at the edge of the security light where she had been telling him about the field research trip she was taking instead of coming to the next month’s training sessions when time stopped.
Everything stopped.
When they woke, they had been locked in side by side ten by seven cages in a cargo bay about the size of a football field filled with ten by seven cages. All their possessions were gone including their clothes, but something had left them blankets that they wrapped around themselves for modesty and warmth. The ship was always cold. The only time Lou felt warm was when they took his group for their daily workouts or when he worked out inside his cage.
Not a bad idea now. Lou dropped to the floor to do push ups.
What do you think she’ll choose?
Carl asked. She’s too smart for worker. They told me those guys don’t usually survive their contract.
They’d given Lou the same speech. Workers did back breaking labor until they finished their contract. If they were lucky enough to survive, they could eek out an existence for the rest of their lives. Fighters entertained in cage matches that looked like a cross between pro wrestling and Roman gladiator contests he’d seen on the History Channel. They usually didn’t last long before they got injured too badly to continue, but the ones who did were rock stars and they could buy their way free early or save up to live in luxury after they finished. Servants worked with the masters who usually gave them tips that allowed them to buy their way free or save for comfort after their contract.
She doesn’t strike me as much of a fighter either.
Will you shut up?
Lou snapped. He rolled over for sit-ups. What was taking so long? When they’d hauled him out of his cell to choose how he was going to spend what might be the rest of his life, he’d been back in no time. It was a big decision, but there weren’t a lot of choices.
Movement down the aisle caught his attention. He sat up. Sandrine walked ahead of the bluish alien with her head high and her hair mussed. As she stepped through the door of her cage, the alien swatted her ass.
She spun around and slapped him. Nothing is free,
she snarled.
The alien laughed and then moved to the next cage in line, releasing Darla.
Well, what did you choose?
Carl asked.
Servant. I find it interesting that they need us to choose.
Sandrine combed her fingers through her blond hair. It had grown a couple of inches below her shoulders during the trip. He couldn’t see the color very well in the dark, but Lou knew the exact green of her eyes. His guts twisted imagining fear and humiliation in them.
Carl whistled a jaunty tune that echoed off the hard surfaces all around them.
Lou pressed against the bars. She was standing in the middle of her cage where he couldn’t reach her. The first few days after they were kidnapped, he and Sandrine had huddled together with their arms around each other as much as the bars allowed, but as the reality sunk in, they’d only done that after lights were out. Now he wished she would reach for him again. He wanted to comfort her. What took so long?
I was trying to get some real information so I could make an informed decision.
Sandrine wrapped her arms around herself.
That bastard.
Lou tried to rattle the bars of his cage, but they were welded to the floor and ceiling. Did he hurt you?
Of course not.
Sandrine scowled at the floor. I’m just having difficulty adjusting to the fact that my education and experience are less important than my ability to brew tea and serve it with a steady hand.
Lou pitched his voice low so Carl wouldn’t hear. Sandrine, are you sure?
What else am I supposed to do? Ask for a faculty position at their local university?
Sandrine spread her arms.
Did Felak say if you’d be safe?
He
