About this ebook

If you had one chance to change your future, would you? Now in paperback!

Seventeen-year-old RJ always gets what she wants. So when her soul is accidentally collected by a distracted Grim Reaper, somebody in the afterlife better figure out a way to send her back from the dead or heads will roll.

But in her quest for mortality, she becomes a pawn in a power struggle between an overzealous archangel and Death Himself. The tribunal presents her with two options: she can remain in the lobby, where souls wait to be processed, until her original lifeline expires, or she can replay three moments in her life in an effort to make choices that will result in a future deemed worthy of being saved. It sounds like a no-brainer. She’ll take a walk down memory lane. How hard can changing her future be?

But with each changing moment, RJ’s life begins to unravel, until this self-proclaimed queen bee is a social pariah. Is walking among the living worth it if she has to spend the next sixty years as an outcast?

This supernatural book has me stymied. I honestly don’t know what teens will think about it. RJ is a mean girl; everything revolves around her and she doesn’t care what others think or if it hurts another person. She is mistakenly taken by the Grim Reaper. Feeling like she’s been treated unfairly, she loudly expresses her displeasure in the afterlife where she’s joined the other dead for sorting. She just has to convince the various angels that she deserves to return to Earth to live her long life that she was meant to live. Most of the novel involves her “trial” in the heavens. She is allowed to return to her body during three pivotal points in her life to see if she can make a better decision. These are brief moments. Afterwards, the “judges” will convene and determine if she can return to her life or if she’ll wait until her planned death to be processed. When the book started, I felt the story was fair. I eventually got to where I was interested and wanted to turn the pages, but I never felt anything for RJ except annoyance. There’s little character development, so you don’t really get to know her or really believe any changes she supposedly makes. Then, I got to the ending. Minus the ending, I would say this would be a popular, fun, easy-to-read novel. After reading the ending, I just don’t know what teens will think. I disliked it. The other characters are thrown in and we’re “told” they are good people. Lots of information is given to us, but it’s never proven by the characters. I’d love to hear other opinions, so students, let me know!

Wonderfully snarky, this young adult book was a breeze to read and teens will definitely get a kick out of it. All hell breaks loose (almost literally) when a grim reaper accidentally takes the wrong soul. RJ was a young, popular seventeen year old just days away from winning the Homecoming Queen crown, when she was snatched away and taken to the afterlife. Understandably upset, she causes a ruckus until the angels and death himself agree to meet with her and look over her unusual case. RJ is willing to do whatever it takes to get back to Earth even if it means going on trial and undertaking a series of tests that will show (or not show) her true merit. Cute and witty, this is a great book for teens by a wonderful new Hoosier author.

17 year old Rowena Joy (RJ) accidentally gets taken by the Grim Reaper before her time. It's nothing new in that there are multiple stories where the character dies "before their time on Earth is up", but it's still a very entertaining and quick read. After a series of deliberations and a deal struck by the devil on her behalf, she is allowed to return to Earth and replay three critical moments in her life. If, as a result of these replays, the world becomes a better place, then she will be allowed to remain on Earth. This book provides perspective into the consequences of actions without being preachy, and I think it will appeal to many middle school readers.
