Chapter One

‘What d’you think, Chris?’ Kirsty held up her Santa dress, studying herself in the mirror as her brother looked on. ‘It’s cute, isn’t it?’

‘It’s a bit short, isn’t it?’ He frowned, looking up from his computer game to watch his twin sister modelling her new dress. It looked like one of those sexy Santa dresses, the ones that barely reached mid-thigh and showed every curve.

‘It’s perfect,’ she protested, swaying from side to side as she imagined herself wearing it.

‘It’s just a department store. Why do they need girls dressed up like ... that, just to help give out freebies?’

‘It doesn’t matter. I like it!’ She turned to look at him. ‘Besides, it’s more for the adults than the kids. You’d be surprised how many more men come into the store when they see us.’

‘No, I wouldn’t,’ he scoffed.

‘Well, I could do with the money,’ she grinned at her reflection, ‘and Billy’s working there too.’

Chris shook his head in dismay. Billy was her latest crush. At twenty-one, the boy was two years her senior and he was less than happy with seeing her flaunt herself at him. He guessed the blond, blue eyed Billy had his own girl anyway, so he doubted he had anything to worry about. Not that it should matter who his sister flaunted herself at. They may be identical twins, but they had their own lives ... mostly. It seemed only natural that they’d always been close, spending a lot of their time together as brother and sister, and best friends.

‘I’m going to get changed, then you can drop me at the mall for my first shift,’ she said, practically skipping from his room.

He rolled his eyes, watching her go. He felt like he should say something to her. Warn her about boys like Billy. Ever since their father had left them and their mother, he’d tried to take his place as the man of the house, although their mom was still very much in charge, and most of the time he felt as though he were playing second fiddle to his sister anyway. She usually took the lead in most things.

Deciding to play his part as the older brother, albeit by less than twenty minutes, he pushed himself to his feet and strode out of his room. He raised his arm to knock on Kirsty’s door, just as it swung open and she stepped through. He tried to stop himself but they collided, sending Kirsty sprawling in front of him as he stumbled sideways.

‘Ouch!’ He heard her yelp as she hit the floor. ‘My ankle.’

‘Sorry. Are you okay?’ He bent to help her up, pulling on her arm.

‘Ouch, stop!’ She collapsed back onto the floor.

It was obvious she’d twisted her ankle or worse. Amidst much complaining he managed to get her to her bed, where she laid back looking furious.

‘How can I go to the store like this? I can’t even walk. You’d better get me an ice pack or something.’

He hurried from her room, bringing back two ice packs and some extra cushions to help raise her foot. Her ankle was visibly swelling by the time he’d made it back.

‘That doesn’t look good. You’ll have to rest it.’

‘Rest it? I can’t rest it. I’ve got to get to my Christmas job - they’re expecting me!’

‘But you can’t walk. You’ll have to phone them and explain,’ he said. ‘I’m sure they’ll be fine.’

‘No, they won’t. They’ll just get someone else to do it instead and I won’t have enough money for Christmas,’ she whined, glaring at him.

‘Well, maybe you can find someone else to take your place, just until it’s feeling better,’ he suggested, feeling awful that he’d ruined her plans. It was all she’d talked about over the past few days - her Christmas job at the store to earn some holiday money and work alongside blue-eyed Billy.

‘Like who? If one of my friends goes, they’ll probably just get off with Billy instead of me.’
