    Chapter One

It’s a month before Christmas and I’m on my way home from the grocery store. I’ve been working double shifts at the hotel near the Spanish Steps in Rome and getting as many hours as possible on my time off at the large department store—they’re always in need of extra help just before Christmas. Wrapping gifts doesn’t take much effort and I can do it in my sleep—it’s what I’m actually doing due to the lack of sleep.

Greta! Good thing you’re home, my sister, Jasmina, says.

Hey, what’s wrong—you look like you saw a ghost.

Worse! Mr. Palazzo was here earlier—he wouldn’t stop banging on the door. He was looking for you. Jasmina still looks shaken by Mr. Palazzo’s visit.

    Did you let him in?

Of course not—I’m not crazy. He said he’ll be back.

I’m sure he will be, I say, wondering how long I’ll have. I know exactly what he wants—he wants his rent money or we’ll be out on the street. Ever since my unexpected illness last summer, I haven’t been able to catch up to the bills. The second job isn’t enough to cover my medical bills, the rent, the utilities bills and put food on the table. I need to do something soon—I can’t let my twelve-year-old sister sleep on the street. I could endure anything. I would be able to go on for days and nights without warmth and food—Jasmina is another story. She would curl up and wither away. She nearly did when our parents died, but luckily, I was able to help her out of the psychological shock she was in before she disappeared into her own world.

What should I do if he comes back and you’re not home? The worry lines on Jasmina’s face deepen.

Try to stay calm—tell him I’ll get back to him before the end of the day.

I’ll try my best, but he’s really scary when he doesn’t leave.

Jass, I promise I’ll get it sorted out today. In the meantime, put the groceries away while I change for work.

I walk into our bedroom, and strip off my jeans and t-shirt. Then I grab my dreary housekeeping dress—something I hate wearing because it’s so plain and gaudy.

Be good when I’m out and call me if you have problems with Mr. Palazzo.

When I walk into the hotel, I’m a few minutes early and decide to grab the bull by its horns. No time like the present—no point putting off what can be done today.

So, I walk to the payroll office to ask Mr. Ferri for a second advance on my salary. I can already imagine before walking in the expression on his face when I ask him for more money.

I take a deep breath and knock. After I hear a low, Come in, I open the door and step inside.

    ~ * ~

What do you mean another advance? Mr. Ferri’s tone is angry.

I’m a little behind on my rent payments, I say. Not that it would make much of a difference
