    Chapter 1

The seaside town of Pelican Cove was cloaked in Christmas spirit. Large red bows adorned the quaint lamp posts on Main Street. Every tree was strung with colorful Christmas lights. Shop fronts boasted big, festive wreaths. A twenty foot tall Christmas tree stood proudly in the town square, festooned with blue and silver balls.

The good folks of Pelican Cove greeted each other with a smile as they scurried about doing their holiday shopping. Food stalls had sprung up in the town square, selling roasted chestnuts and hot chocolate.

Jenny King sat at a table in the Boardwalk Café, staring in dismay at the woman before her. Jenny’s aunt Star looked equally troubled.

What do you mean, there isn’t enough? Jenny asked, munching on a warm chocolate chip cookie. It’s Christmas.

We have been in a recession for the past couple of years, the woman said grimly. Many of our usual sponsors have cut their donations in half. Some have pulled out entirely.

Towels, toiletries, shoes, pajamas ... none of these items are luxuries, Star said, reading off a list.

We may not be able to provide the barest necessities this year, the woman called Mrs. Nash added. Toys from Santa are impossible.

Mrs. Nash was an administrator at the Carey Home for Children, popularly known as Carey House. It had started out as an orphanage almost a hundred years ago, founded by the Carey family, one of the first settlers on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Now it offered a safe haven to children of all ages who did not have a family of their own.

But every child needs a present at Christmas! Jenny cried. What about holding a fundraiser?

It might be too late for that, Mrs. Nash said. You are already doing a lot, and we are grateful, believe me.

Jenny had donated a big chunk of her earnings of the past three months
