Ten seconds before the obnoxious beeping of the alarm clock went off, Keelie turned off the alarm. She slowly sat up in her warm bed and looked out her window at the black and violet sky. It was a quarter to six and she had been awake for at least an hour already, maybe longer. She had a great opportunity to impress her boss today, and she was terrified she was going to fail. She made sure to have her best outfit dry cleaned, a nice breakfast to be alert and ready to take on the day, and plenty of time to enjoy a hot, sizzling shower. Her shower was her safe haven to think, relax, and just be alone.

She looked over at her sleeping ex-boyfriend and sighed. He clearly didn’t understand what sleep on the couch meant, but she was happy to have a chaotic day at work to be away from him. Matt was down on his luck and in the throes of addiction, she hardly had the heart to throw him out into the street right now. His own family cut him out of their lives, supposedly for his own good (or their own good). It was already mid-October and dropping to the teens at night. Thinking of Matt sleeping on a bench or in a park, alone, made her sick. She made a promise she would never do to him what his parents and so-called friends had done.

No matter how bad things got.

It was a bustling mid-November morning in Troy. People were heading to work or dropping their kids off at school. It was nice to see so many people out, and in what seemed to be elevated moods. By seven o’clock she was at the Tribune’s office and going through her messages. She was getting everything she needed for her big assignment today; Bianchi’s 50th anniversary.

Bianchi’s was the favorite hangout in Troy. It was a nice place to take the kids, the wife and/or girlfriend, or hang out for a guys and girls night. Their restaurant was delicious, their selection of beer and wines imported from Italy and unlike anything you could find in the United States, and the deli section of the building was absolute Heaven. Stepping inside Bianchi’s was like entering the late 1940s, early 1950s. And on every wall you would find an Italian flag, a beautiful painting or photograph of Italy, or some prominent Italian or Italian-American entertainer.

Keelie went to her boss, Seraina’s office to get a short briefing of what was to be done today and what to expect. She was nervous, but ready to do a great job on this project so she could go from beat reporter and up to OP-ED reporter; a more desirable position at the Tribune.

    "Keelie!
