    Chapter 1

S o, I have some good news, Scarlett voiced from where she was seated on the couch, watching Lillian grade papers with mild interest. Lillian hummed in response as her red pen danced across the page, disappointed at the amount of errors the current student’s test seemed to have.

    Lillian? Scarlett sighed.

Her voice raised in pitch, irritation seeping through her tone and Lillian knew if she didn’t give her younger sister her undivided attention, there would be hell to pay.

I’m listening, Lillian assured, placing her pen down and leaning back on her chair to emphasize her point. Seemingly satisfied with her response, Scarlett’s expression immediately returned to one of ease.

Well, it’s about me and Robert. Or maybe just me. Well no, Robert is involved, too, of course...

Spit it out, Scar, Lillian groaned, cutting her sister off from what was bound to be an unnecessarily long tale.

I’ve told you I don’t like being called that, she huffed, her blue eyes narrowing into slits, but Lilian remained unperturbed, raising a brow hoping Scarlett would get to the point.

It wasn’t as though anyone could say they were surprised by Lillian’s forward attitude. Anyone who had to deal with her family for as long as Lillian had could hardly be blamed. It wasn’t that she didn’t love them of course, it was just that there was only so judgment and scorn she could deal with before it all got to her.

Scarlett is the pride and joy of the Davis family. Living in a place as small as Margaretville, Scarlett’s popularity from high school never really faded, even now that she’s turning twenty-six.

She’s everything their family could want in a daughter; attractive, condescending and married. Lillian didn’t care much for those traits in herself and as a result, she’s definitely had to endure her fair share of criticism.

I’m pregnant, Scarlett’s screech of excitement resonated through Lillian’s thoughts, throwing her off completely. Lillian looked up in shock to see a look of complete enthrallment on Scarlett’s face.

Her thin lips were pulled up into an almost shy smile; uncharacteristic of her sister. Her shoulder length blonde hair, usually tucked firmly behind her ears, was in a slight state of disarray in her excitement. Lillian couldn’t be happier for her.

She’d known her sister wanted a child ever for as long as she could remember. It was clear this moment meant the world to her and she could only imagine how painful it had been for her younger sister to hold back the news for the entirety of her visit.

Scar, I’m so happy for you, Lillian smiled, quickly getting up from her chair and rushing over to where Scarlett was still seated on the couch. Scarlett also quickly got up and the two embraced tightly, an action the two didn’t share often.

It was a mark of Scarlett’s true happiness that she didn’t protest the use of her childhood nickname this time. Instead, she wiped a few stray tears as they pulled away, completely overwhelmed. Lillian didn’t blame her, this being a huge moment in her life.

Robert and I are having dinner over at our place tonight. We’re inviting mom and dad over to tell them the big news. Of course, I was supposed to wait until dinner to tell everyone together, but I just couldn’t wait, Scarlett rambled.

Lillian resisted the urge to cringe just at the mere image of a family dinner. It was the perfect opportunity for her family to sit down together and criticize Lillian’s life choices. She tried not to let it get to her because today wasn’t about her. Today was about Scarlett and Rob and she would be damned if she allowed anything they said torment her.

SO WHAT IS IT, HONEY? As much as I look forward to family dinners, I know there’s a reason you called us all here, their father asked, looking up from the spaghetti he was in the process of devouring to start questioning Scarlett.

At the mention of her news, Scarlett immediately lit up, placing her fork down and clearing her throat in anticipation. Robert placed a hand over Scarlett’s on the table, perhaps as reassurance or a reminder that he was actually present at this dinner.

I’m pregnant, she said, her voice an octave away from a screech.

The actual screech came moments later when her mom dropped her fork, standing up quickly from the table to hug Scarlett, much like Lillian had done earlier minus the squeal.

I’m so proud of you! She exclaimed as she all but pulled Scarlett from her chair.

Lillian watched the scene before her, resisting the urge to roll her eyes at the word ‘proud’. Their dad soon joined the ranks moments later and soon Scarlett could no longer be seen as their parents huddled around her, demanding information.

Robert sat quietly, lips pursed as he was all but ignored. Their parents had never been fond of Robert for reasons Lillian didn’t understand. It bothered her how Scarlett did
