Chapter One

Livvy paced the length of the floor behind the stage as she anxiously awaited her turn to stand front and center and allow the audience to bid on her – win her. The noise from the crowd did nothing to help her nerves; it did, however, make her wish she could turn back time and decline the offer. For a brief moment, she felt like a prized mare on sale. How degrading.

No. She shouldn’t be thinking such negative thoughts. It was for charity, after all. It was just, well, being up there on that stage, everyone’s eyes on her, made her the center of attention, and that was the last thing she ever wanted to be regardless of how independent she was in her daily life, Livvy just wasn’t one of those girls. You know, the kind who spent hours in front of the mirror plastering makeup on their faces and dousing their hair with so much hairspray that high-speed winds wouldn’t budge it. She rarely wore dresses, for goodness sake. She was a country girl through and through. A nose in a book, opinions to herself kind of girl. While she kept to herself, she didn’t take crap from anyone, and that earned her plenty of friends.

Livvy shook her hands, cold and clammy, to bring some life and heat back into them. She listened as the man with the microphone listed off Clarissa’s attributes: 4.0 GPA, eldest of four, a college junior majoring in journalism. Clarissa was an All-American, girl-next-door, and one of Livvy’s closest friends. Clarissa was also the one who pulled on Livvy’s heartstrings enough to talk her into agreeing to auction herself off for a weekend getaway abroad. It was for the sake of childhood cancer research for the lab at the hospital Livvy and her friends volunteered at on the weekends.

I hope the men are handsome. I wouldn’t want to be forced to spend a weekend with an old, balding man.

Livvy overheard the voice and recognized it instantly. It belonged to Chelsea. Livvy had to agree with the girl. She wouldn’t want to have to spend the weekend with an unattractive gentleman. She hoped each of the girls, herself included, had the opportunity to spend the time with someone who was nice, too. While looks helped, manners went further.

Can we get forty-five hundred?

The auctioneer’s voice echoed through the reception hall, thanks to the aid of a microphone, and Livvy gasped at the number they were on. That amount would go far in helping to fund the research for the kids.

Olivia, aren’t you excited?

Livvy stopped and looked up in time to see Bella approach. She smiled at the energetic blonde. I am more nervous than anything, she responded.

But why? Just imagine the places you might get to go. The information they provided stated there were getaways for London, Milan, Dubai, and even Paris! I have always wanted to go to London. Do you think I’ll get to go there?

Livvy wanted to laugh at Bella’s excitement. Who knows? Fingers crossed for you.

I hope the person who bids on me pays a lot. I really want to help those poor kids.

Me, too, Bella, she agreed. More than anything, Livvy wanted a cure for those children.

They both jumped when they heard the gavel hit the podium. Sold! To the gentleman in the back for seventy-two fifty. Enjoy Milan.

Oh my gosh! Bella’s shocked reaction matched what Livvy was feeling herself. That was a lot of money, and Clarissa would be ecstatic at that price. Livvy just hoped she could come close.
