    CHAPTER 1

    WHEN AN INTERVIEW GOES WRONG

Alice flipped through her grimoire. The spell for dancing sticks might be good. Only a talented witch could coordinate several figures at once. As long as she chose a neutral dance. No need to spark any bigotry the wizard might have. Getting a job at the hospital was hard enough as it was. Without it she would never raise the money in time to pay for her sister’s freedom.

A breeze cooled her face and she glanced up. In the hospital’s green robes, a few witches with bubbling potions swept by. The smoke stung her eyes, souring her mouth. Another pair pulled along an injured troll who groaned at anyone or anything within reach.
