    Rain drove down on the roof of my car, sounding for all the world like applause. As though the gods themselves were saying, bravo to my old Saturn sedan for managing to break down on the side of a lonely road.

    I used to joke that taking highway 84 out of Woodside toward the coast was like driving along the borders of a horror movie. There’s even a summer camp out there, somewhere around La Honda. Went there in fifth grade for Outdoor Education. Perfect place for some masked killer to stalk teens for the crime of experimenting with sex.

    Didn’t seem so funny right now.

    Maybe half an hour behind me lay the sprawl of the San Francisco Bay Area. Second biggest megalopolis on the West Coast. And here my car sat, on the side of a road desolate enough that it didn’t even have street lamps.

    The Bay Area needed this rain. Needed it badly. Especially out
