Chapter 1- Camp Jones
1976
It’s in the early hours inside a darkened bedroom an alarm starts to go off and is silenced by a man’s arm. The man gets out of bed in the darkened room. He walks quietly out of the darkened room and closes the door behind him , seeing a darkened image of another person in the bed. He goes into the bathroom and turns on the light.
Clint Mc Daniels; nicknamed ‘Mac’, a forty one year old dark haired muscular man with a clo se haircut and mustache takes his cloth e s off. He gets into the tub and takes a shower. He shaves while in the shower with a straight razor and shaving lather. After a few minutes he gets out. After drying off, he gets dressed into an Army Officers uniform. He puts on his wire rimmed glasses. As he is combing his hair in the mirror , he looks at his crooked name tag….
Lt. Coronel Clint Mc Daniels
US Army 4th Infantry
and straightens it.
He walks out of the bathroom and finds his wife, Rose Mc Daniels ; long bleached blonde hair, slender and wearing colorful skin tight pants and top, preparing herself breakfast in the kitchen.
Sorry if I woke you!
he says in a quiet distant voice.
No I was getting up anyways; I have that interview in town before I leave,
she says angrily.
Will you be here when I get home?
he says grabbing his bagged lunch from the refrigerator and an apple and placing them in his duty bag.
Probably not, I’m not sure. If I get moved today, I will page you so you will know wher e to send my support money too and these,
she says handing him legal papers.
Are you sure?
Yes it’s over, I’m done. To many bases, to many deployments, I just want a normal life. That’s why I was with Kevin. He made me feel young and free. Now you messed that up by transferring him to Germany. I want out.
He grabs his coat, hat and briefcase. He look around the living room at packed boxes. He looks at the papers she handed him and slowly walks to the door reading the ‘Dissolution of Marriage Petition’ dated a month earlier.
You had this written a month ago?
The day you transferred Kevin,
she says and looks at him with anger and disgust.
He closes the door and walks to his truck. He gets into his Chevrolet Pick Up and drives away. Tears run down his face as he drives on the residential military base housing streets. He pulls over and wipes the tears from his face. He puts on dark sunglasses and continues on to the base admin istration building. H e looks at his wristwatch and it is 5:45 in the morning.
He gets out and walks to the darkened glass entry doors. He opens one side and goes in to find forty co-workers standing around looking at him smiling . They start to applaud him. He lowers his bag to the ground and continues shaking hands and working his way to a large sheet cake. On it is stenciled, ‘20 Years Anniversary’ and a wrapped present.
Congratulations Mac,
his closest friend Major Donnie Swift; male 39, larger size and height also in full uniform.
Thanks Donnie was this you idea?
No it was Bridget’s,
he says looking at Master Sergeant Bridget Bell; early thirties, red hair, blue eyes, very attractive and also a close friend.
Mac goes over to Bridget, Thanks, how did you know?
I get your mail. You like red chocolate cake right?
she says looking at him seductively.
He takes his sunglasses off and she sees his red eyes.
What the hell did she do to you now?
she says angrily.
She’s leaving me today!
Oh, I’m so sorry. You were the only thing holding that marriage together. She did not love you, only your status and money. Let her go, you will heal in time,
she says tearing up herself.
Thanks, sometimes I imagine that this is not happening, that things are normal. Like other couples.
It should be, it’s not you. She’s not faithful. Tell me, that you won’t go back to her. She is not good for you anymore. You have to bury her in your heart and find peace.
She says concerned.
I will try.
Day by day!
They look at each other and smile.
Speech,
a coworker says smiling at Mac.
Mac walks over to his cake and turns to his friends.
Thanks everyone for surprising me. I never remembered how long it’s been, until the military reminded me in a form letter….
He opens the wrapped present and finds a n army green t-shirt with ‘Best Boss!’ stenciled on It. He olds it up, I really appreciate this. Thanks!
So do we get the day off boss?
a short female civilian clerk asks.
Sorry, we have VIP’s en route to our beautiful castle this afternoon. They are selling Tanks! So all hands, let’s get everything in order. It is catered by them, if that helps.
Bridget hands him a knife.
Nice cake,
he cuts a piece .
S he finishes cutting up pieces for everyone.
Congratulations Coronel, retirement plans?
a staff sergeant asks smiling.
Just another day in Paradise!
Mac says laughing.
Mac walks over to his office carrying the large piece of cake he cut, the shirt and his duty bag. He is followed by Donnie carrying two paper plates with cakes.
Donnie closes the door. They set down at their desks across from each other.
Donnie looks seriously at him, Did she leave?
She’s moving out today.
What are you going to do?
I don’t know. She’s not coming back. I have thirty days of leave I can take off,
Mac says and takes off his uniform shirt to expose his bare chest and back. He prepares to put on the t-shirt and Donnie sees the scars from the Viet Cong land mine that his Lieutenant stepped on during patrol, while following a Vietnamese military foot trail through a jungle.
Man you are lucky you survived.
Mac looks over to him confused and then sees that he is looking at his scars. No it should have been me, I just walked over the same path. My Lieutenant deserved to live. Hell he had a wife and kids waiting for him at home,
he says and rubs his deepest scar. Why me I can’t even keep a wife.
It don’t work that way Mac. You never know, when it’s your number, then your out. Hey, s o do you have family you can go too?
Just the Army, I was raised in Foster homes before I worked my way through college. I joined the Army and went to OCS. So no family, I think I’ll do some back country camping and get grounded,
he says as he is tying his uniform tye .
Hard times, it took me about six months to get over my first ex-wife. The second ex went faster, when I met Eve, I knew that she was my last one. That’s why I never married her.
How long has it been?
Two years and three days.
Happy late anniversary!
Camping sounds boring, how about coming with me to Sitka, Alaska. The King Salmon are running heavy next month. I’m going with a group from the base.
Thanks for the offer, but I just need to get away and clear my mind.
Okay , so what time is the Tank demo?
In one hour,
Mac says looking at his wrist watch. Mac remembers when his wife bought him the watch for Christmas, She bought this for me!
he says pointing at the watch.
She gut hooked you good. You have to move on, it will eat you up alive otherwise. Did I tell you Bridget is coming to cook for the group?
he says smiling.
How will that clear my mind?
Best medicine known to man, my friend.
I think we better finish this cake before we start crawling through tanks.
They laugh and eat their cakes.
Mac’s desk phone rings, Okay,
he hangs it up.
Donnie gives him a funny look, Short call.
She’s out,
Mac says ready to cry.
Donnie pulls a bottle of scotch out of his desk drawer, For medicinal purposes!
No thanks, can you handle the reps., I think I need some time.
Yeah sure, I’ll see you in the morning.
Okay, thanks,
he says and they shake hands. Donnie places his arm around him and slips the scotch in his bag that Mac will be carrying out without him seeing.
Mac grabs his bag and walks out the back door to his vehicle.
He starts his pick up and just looks out the window into the distance and sees an American flag flying. It is gently b l owing in the wind. He wipes his eyes, si ts upright and drives back to his house.
He carries his bag and opens the unlocked door. He is shocked how much she took. She left his personal clothing and work stuff. She also left him a leather chair he had when they got married and a small radio/cassette player that his dead mother had given them as a wedding gift. He sets down his bag on the floor and it opens up, revealing Donnie’s bottle. He smiles and pours himself a drink into a bathroom paper cup that she missed. He walks around the officer’s residence and finds a pile of wedding photos that she let in a paper bag in a trash can in the empty bedroom. He walks back into the dining room and sits down on the chair looking at their wedding photos and cries. He puts down his empty cup and starts drinking from the bottle. He falls asleep holding the bottle and her photo in his chair.
Chapter 2- The Crystal Hill Incident
1976 Crystal Hill
It’s in the early hours of spring. The cool clear night is illuminated by a full moon. The moon light silhouettes a group of grazing black and white cows on top of a tall hill. The elevation of the hill is seen by the stands of naturally growing Ponderosa Pines, Douglas Firs, Black Oaks, Manzanita and deer brush. These stands are common in the Pacific Sierra Mountain foothills. There is a peaceful and tranquil neighborhood street, far below the fenced hillside.
A beautiful collection of stars, shines high above the cows. One star is brighter that the others and appears to be moving closer and closer. The star’s path arcs rapidly across the horizon as it gets closer and bi gger. Now it slows down and changes direction toward the hill . The bright white light turns to a bright blue, as it hurls towards the Hilltop.
A hissing sound is heard, as it comes closer. It slows down and falls just out of sight on the other side of the hilltop. Quiet and peace is restored again to the group of grazing cows. One cow slowly walks over to a taller clump of scrumptious green matter. It extends its long tongue and yanks it from its sturdy stocks. The hilltop starts to show the first glimmers of a vanishing moon’s light, just before dawn. A bright blue light is seen on the Hilltop coming from the other side and it is oscillating .
3:20 AM (0320 Hours)
Mac is awakened by a phone call from the base
