CHAPTER ONE
Our school recently partnered with Germany for a cultural summer exchange program…
Miss Carol, the teacher announced and continued on with the specific details of the exchange program. If you are interested, kindly have one of your parents fill out this form and submit it to me, no later than Tuesday. All applications will be reviewed by our summer exchange committee and the four selected students will be announced the Monday after. Any questions?
the teacher then answered questions until the bell rang and everyone in class grabbed their backpacks and raced towards the doors. All except Helena.
Helena walked towards the teacher's desk and said, Can I have four of the forms, please?
At the puzzled look of the teacher, she explained, I'm sure my friends would also be interested in doing the cultural summer exchange program as much as I am,
she smiled and reached for the sheaf of papers. She thanked the teacher and met her friends at the lockers.
Hi guys, did you hear about the Germany summer exchange program?
Helena greeted her friends and proceeded to tell them all about it and distributed the forms to Grace, Richard and Drake, who all agreed it was interesting and worth a shot.
Oh wow, I do hope all four of us gets selected to go to Germany. I don't think I will enjoy it as much if I were to go with complete strangers,
Grace said, reviewing the form.
So, how about if we all submit these forms together and if one of us gets selected, maybe we can ask the committee to at least pick one ourselves?
Helena suggested.
Or if you’re really lucky, the committee would have had a really hard time selecting students and let's say they were only able to make one choice and have that student decide on who goes with them?
Richard added.
Hmm… I highly doubt that but we can always hope, right?
Drake looked around the group.
Anyway, I’d better get going. See you all tomorrow?
Grace said, tucking the form into one of her backpack’s pocket and gave her friends a hug.
I’ll walk with you home, if you don't mind,
Richard fell into step beside her and took her hand in his.
Grace smiled up at him. Sure, I’d love that,
she said.
They walked in silence for a block or so when finally, Grace asked, Richard, do you miss being a vampire?
A surprised look crossed his face as he considered the question. Sometimes. Like for example, I miss not having the need to sleep every night or morning. I could get so much done because I didn't need to sleep. I miss having long, thoughtful conversations with you without having to pick up the phone and I miss being able to travel with the speed of thought and knowing that I can be able to better protect you if you're in danger. Those things I miss the most but as for the rest, not really,
he said, enjoying the warm afternoon sun on his pale skin.
Grace smiled. Well, it looks like you're adjusting pretty well to being human again after three hundred odd years. So tell me, have you been to Germany?
she asked reverting back to their earlier conversation at school.
Grace does have a habit of jumping from one subject to another and back with lightning speed and without warning. Actually, I’ve never been to Germany. For some odd reason — which I can't remember — I stayed away from that country. And now it looks like I’ll have an opportunity to traipse around Germany with you and our friends,
he smiled down at her.
I do hope our group gets selected to go. That’ll be awesome,
she said, stopping in front of her driveway and turned to give Richard a hug. Thanks for walking me home. See you tomorrow in school?
she added.
It is always a pleasure to walk you home and I’ll see you in school tomorrow,
Richard raised their intertwined hands and kissed her knuckles. Don't stay up too late reading,
he added, watching Grace go up the steps to her front porch.
Can’t promise that,
Grace said with a laugh before waving goodbye and shutting the front door.
***
Helena and Drake were walking down the street towards the woods where the Coven was meeting that night.
Have you talked to Ava recently?
Helena asked.
No, have you?
Drake turned to look at her.
I called her cell several times, but she never answered or called me back. Do you think she'll be attending tonight's meet?
she wondered.
I'm sure she'll be there tonight. How about if we observe her for now like you said back at the camping site and take notes on any strange behavior she exhibits,
Drake said.
Okay,
Helena said and dropped the subject.
Helena and Drake were the first to arrive. Since there was still daylight, Helena took out her homework and worked on it until the rest of the coven members arrived.
Blessed be,
each one greeted the other.
Blessed be,
the Crone said to everyone as she sat in the place of honor, at the head of the circle. Welcome to another coven meeting. What pressing matters do we have to discuss this eve?
she asked.
When no one brought up anything to share, the Crone's gaze focused on Drake. Drake, how is Helena's training going?
she asked in her raspy voice.
Helena is progressing nicely. A bit slow but steady. She has mastered the Fire element and is now moving into learning and mastering elemental Water. She is currently struggling with a gallon-sized water and anything larger than that. What I suggest is to continue practicing. If anyone here present today has any tips and tricks for Helena to try, we welcome all of your suggestions,
Drake said.
Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence, Drake,
Helena whispered and Drake shook his head suppressing a smile.
Ava shot dagger looks at Helena. All around them, older members of the coven shared their tips and tricks while Drake and Helena scribbled on their notebooks to reference later.
When the meeting ended and their circle dispersed, Helena rode home with her parents and Drake rode with his.
You doing alright, Ava? You've been so quiet lately. Is something the matter, honey?
Margaret, Ava's mother drew her to her side as they both walked towards their car.
I'm fine,
came the reply.
"You know you can talk to me
