Show them your scar, Jadwiga said as she leaned over the bar to take the glasses. That’ll shut them up.

Brandy shook her head as she picked up the empty tray to finish her clean up. Glancing at the Hildani bartender, she said, They think it’s sexy, adds mystery.

No, you being the only human is what they find sexy. Why don’t you have that scar erased? the slender bartender asked. I don’t even think they charge for that anymore.

It reminds me of him, was all Brandy said as she walked back towards the dwindling crowd.

The Rusty Gate Tavern was the only place serving spirits that had a human motif. It was located on a small, terraformed moon captured in a geosynchronous orbit above the small planet Trax, whose healing waters were famous throughout the system. The tavern served the pilots who brought in vacationers to visit the spas. Vacation travel had increased, and more pilots were being recruited. Working men of all species needed a place to unwind and blow off steam, and this was one of those places.

As Brandy returned with another load of empty glasses, the bartender suggested, You should try to get a job at one of the spas on the surface. You’d still be the token human, but you would make more money.

I can’t, Brandy replied, taking the empty tray again. He’d never find me if I left.

After the tavern emptied, Brandy touched the locket at her neck and sat down at the table where everything started that fateful night…
