Rebounder

About this ebook
Tavin is a Rebounder, a genderless alien whose job is to put on a different body every night and comfort people who are "on the rebound."
Tavin is also a hopeless romantic.
Embodied as a tall, dark, and handsome man one evening, Tavin falls for a shy woman named Marva. Though she isn't a target, Tavin and avian sidekick Feifei track down enough intel on her to find out she is intersex. When Tavin steps into her Perfect Partner body, he's intersex too.
There’s one big problem: a Rebounder interfering in the life of a human who isn’t a target is strictly forbidden.
Loving Marva puts his vocation in jeopardy. To Tavin, being a Rebounder is everything. Is he really ready to risk it all in the name of love?

Chapter 1
Can you imagine a Rebounder speed dating?
Tavin asked, slipping out of a hideous pink lamé miniskirt, tossing it to the back of the bountiful closet. It would be like, ‘Hi, I’m Tavin. Sure I look like one hot mama now, but wait five minutes and I might turn into a big-ass biker dude.’
Feifei laughed—well, tweeted anyway, but Tavin had come to understand the sparrow’s bird-speak. After all, Feifei was a Rebounder too, albeit at a lower level than Tavin. After six years working together, helping to ease humans past the suffering and torment of a break-up, they had no trouble comprehending one another.
Imagine how many targets you’re bound to see at this speed dating thing,
Feifei said, perching in Tavin’s hair. I can’t imagine anyone putting themselves through that many first dates if they weren’t on the rebound.
I don’t know.
Tavin turned to catch their image in the bedroom mirror: a busty dark-haired woman with golden skin, wearing nothing but a black lace bra and matching thong… with a bird on her head. It isn’t wrong to want to meet new people. You’ve become jaded.
Well?
Feifei prodded. Haven’t you? Every one of our targets just wants to get laid. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am… or sir, or whatever body you’re in that day. Humans are such pigs.
That’s rich, coming from an alien sparrow.
Tavin flicked the bird away and then reached around to unlatch the bra. It had taken a while to get the hang of these things, but Tavin never thought about it anymore. And I don’t think humans are pigs. Well, some are, but overall they want to be loved. Not just be loved, but they want to give love. That’s why I’m here—so they can burn off some animal lust on the rebound and then move forward into healthier relationships with other humans.
We should call you Pollyanna,
Feifei twittered, landing in a makeshift nest on the dresser, watching Tavin undress fully. Hey, you’re staring at your boobs again.
Am not,
Tavin said, feeling a blush come on strong. Feifei was right, of course. It’s just… I wouldn’t mind keeping them, you know?
Sure,
Feifei agreed. I’d build a nest between your boobs if they stuck around long enough.
Tavin laughed wistfully, then fell into bed. Bed was the best place in the world, right here on this duvet as white and soft as a cloud. But work came first, no time off, just work, work, work.
Sitting up naked on the duvet, Tavin gazed out the window, absorbing the frenetic energy of the downtown bustle. I don’t feel like being a dude tonight—not the kind of dude this target’s drawn to. Sometimes I wish I could have one body and run with it, maybe meet someone nice and settle down, get out of the Rebounder business.
Fat chance!
the sparrow warbled, flitting to the headboard. Once a Rebounder, always a Rebounder.
There’ve been a few of us who’ve settled down together,
Tavin countered.
"Together is the operative word. You seem to think you’re going to meet some human and fall in love and everything’ll be just ginger. It doesn’t happen, Tavin. You know it doesn’t happen."
Tavin shrugged, watching a couple embrace on the sidewalk below: a woman wearing a tailored red jacket wrapped her arms around a man in a black trench coat. They looked so happy, so heart-wrenchingly happy together.
Anything could happen,
Tavin whispered. You never know. Love can sweep in when you least expect it.
Returning to the dresser, Feifei nestled in and sat quietly for a good long while. Tavin knew it was time to get ready for tonight, but a couple more minutes of silence would be heavenly. This speed-dating thing would be loud and chatter-filled. Some days that kind of excitement might be appealing, but not today. Today all Tavin wanted was a quiet coffee with a mystery date, a perfect person, a lifelong love.
No sense putting it off any longer,
Tavin said, wondering if Feifei found this behaviour at all maudlin. Come on, let’s run that strand one more time just to be sure.
Your target’s not going to suddenly become a lesbian,
Feifei laughed as they made their way to the living room. She wants a man who’s gonna take charge, show her who’s boss—I heard her talking on her cell phone when I ripped out this strand of hair.
You’re evil.
Tavin laughed as Feifei set a kinky hair on the DNA reader, root side up. "I have no problem playing the strong, sensitive type—and I’d never complain about having a
