Logan saw the street from where he stood. He saw himself running, the way he liked to run to first base. Give it all you’ve got,
his dad always told him. He wanted to run away from Kayla in the same spirit, never looking back.
Behind him, she moaned softly. He clenched his fists. Sweat dripped from his forehead. Her mother was off to work; Kayla had no siblings. Old Mrs. Kaufman next door came to check on her, but she was away to visit relatives in Colorado.
He was her only friend. She needed him. She moaned again, this time louder, in anguish. He turned, slowly, and walked to her small bedroom. What he saw made his head spin. She was trying to sit upright, but the costume was flat as a board. Her eyes bulged, her face was beyond red, going purple.
Kayla!
he cried, rushing towards the bed.
She rolled to her side, and he touched the costume to help. Screaming, he recoiled. His hands were red hot. Kayla rolled over and dropped to the floor. She whimpered.
What do we do?
Kayla was panting, her head resting on her swollen cheek. Her hands and arms were burnt, as the costume squeezed her torso. It was alive; it was undulating ever so sickeningly. ‘Made of a thousand wicked, vicious worms,’ Logan thought.
There is one thing, though, we could do …
Kayla whispered.
What?
That woman … on Grayson Street. We could ask her …
