About this ebook
Miss Read is certain of one thing—she won’t be forced to hire grumpy Mrs. Pringle to straighten up her house. Mrs. Pringle of Fairacre chronicles the life of the beloved but curmudgeonly school cleaner through the stories of her fellow villagers. Readers will delight in the quirks of this favorite character, from the “flare-ups” of her bad leg to her possessive fondness for the school’s two coal stoves. Her neighbors also remember Maud Pringle’s little-known benevolence, like the time she knitted mittens for poor Joe Coggs. The downland village of Fairacre bustles with familiar characters, who all have stories to share about the town’s (and readers’) favorite grouch.
“Miss Read is a master of characterization and description . . . Mrs. Pringle is a book to savor to the very end.” —Broward Sun-Sentinel
“A soothing oasis of tidy living for the frazzled reader weary of an untidy world.” —Kirkus Reviews

In the 1998, she was awarded an MBE, or Member of the Order of the British Empire, for her services to literature.

Reviews for Mrs. Pringle of Fairacre
43 ratings4 reviews
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A gentle novel set in a small English village. Schoolteacher Miss Read recounts the joys and the occasional headaches of village life, through the lens of her experiences dealing with the crusty custodian Mrs. Pringle. Cantankerous but hardworking, Mrs. Pringle presents a challenge to all she meets, including Miss Read. However, the years of interaction show a soft side to the formidable lady, too.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A lovely visit back in time to a village school in the 1950s. Mrs Pringle is the efficient school cleaner who scolds everyone including Miss Read, the head teacher. Nothing much happens, just a very pleasant, gentle story of the ebb and flow of village life.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was less successful than most of the other books for me because it was a rehash of all the Mrs. Pringle stories told in the earlier books. I would probably have liked it better if I were not doing an intensive start to finish read of the series. But I am.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5As always Miss Read continues to provide a wonderful story with some of my favorite characters. I would encourage everyone to give Fairacre a visit.
