    THE TROUBLE: GALLEY

    LINKS MCGEE, BEING the only pirate among them who could read a star chart, was navigator by default. He pulled out from his breast pocket a small packet of paper that ingeniously unfolded into a full star chart of the known universe that covered the entire galley table. Not knowing where in that vastness they could be, McGee applied three drops from a vial of tincture to his eyes to dilate his pupils, then took a drop to his tongue to dilate his mind. The drug took a few minutes to reach maximum effect, until both the entirety of the star chart and the universe were overlaid in McGee’s mind.

    I’ve figured out where we are, Captain.

    We’re on the edge of the Great Co-Prosperity Sphere. The Captain unlatched her prosthesis from the periscope. I recognize these stars all too well.

    McGee grunted, and crumpled the star map into not quite its original shape. He hated wasting the psychoactive material on navigating rather than on improving his golf score, which was its true purpose, as far as he was concerned.

    Set course for New Macau. I have no intention of falling back into the clutches of the Five Clans. The Captain removed and polished the gears from a bit of unspecified machinery that turned out to be her left shoulder.

    Oi! New Macau isn’t exactly neutral territory, Cockney Vic put his feet up on the table, snagging the end of the star chart that McGee was attempting to fold back into its pocketbook shape.
