Drifting with Mad Mike - David Riley

    THE MAD LIFE

IT’S DECEMBER 2016 and the sun is setting on a warm evening in downtown Auckland.

A giant outdoor theatre screen is set up at the waterfront. Excited fans have come to watch a film about one of New Zealand’s greatest ever motorsport drivers.

Just as the film is about to start, the crowd hear the scream of a car engine.

Whoa, that sounds like the real thing, a fan says.

"It is the real thing, says another. Look!"

A sleek, 208 turbo, Rotary-powered, Mazda RX8, rockets past, drifts round two tight corners and comes to a smoking stop next to the screen.

The driver leaps from the car and takes a seat in the stands.

    Who is he?

Mad Mike – one of the best drifters in the world – that’s who!

    WIPE OUT

MIKE MAD MIKE WHIDDETT was born on January 10, 1981. As a child he lived with his mum, in East Auckland.

Like lots of children, Mike owned a three wheel tricycle when he was little. Most children rode their bikes on the footpath. Not Mike. That was boring!  He’d rather race down steep hills or make ramps to jump over.

He was only three when he did his first wipe out – skidding off the driveway and landing face down on his front lawn.  If only you could ride your bike in a safe way, son, his mum said, as she wiped dirt and grass
