Prayers About
God and Me
Everything
Rejoice always, pray continually.
1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-17
Dear God…
I have a lot to memorize in school. Math facts. Spelling words. Names and definitions. Sometimes my brain is so full of information, I can’t remember anything at all! I just want to stop, empty it all out, and then put everything back in.
The Bible might seem complicated too, but it doesn’t have to be. Same with prayer. I don’t have to say certain words or ask for certain things or even be in a certain place in order for You to hear my prayers. I also don’t need to keep anything from You. That’s because You want to hear everything from me. You are interested in every part of my life. Lord, help me to make my first thought every day be of You.
Amen.
Hunt
The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.
MATTHEW 13:44
Dear God…
Treasure hunts are fun! I’m given a set of clues, and then I run from place to place, figuring out where each clue takes me next until I eventually find the hidden treasure. Being a treasure hunter is a blast—especially when I discover the treasure.
The cool thing about walking with You, God, is that I’m always hunting for something new—and finding it. You don’t hide Yourself from me, but there is always more and more to discover about You. In fact, the whole wide world is filled with evidence of You—clues about who You are and how You want me to live. Help me to live my life as a treasure hunter, looking for You in everyone I meet and showing Your might and power and love in all of my actions.
Amen.
Visible
Does he not see my ways and count my every step?
JOB 31:4
Dear God…
Sometimes I think it would be fun to be invisible for a day. I could spy on my friends and siblings and sneak into a baseball game or movie or just walk down the street without anybody knowing I’m there.
The fun probably wouldn’t last very long though. Pretty soon, I would want to talk to someone or laugh with someone. And then what? Nobody would be able to see me! Jesus, I’m actually glad I’m not invisible. And I’m especially glad I’m not invisible to You. Sometimes I feel lost—like when I’m in a crowded classroom or I don’t have anyone to talk to at a big gathering—but You always see me. Thank You that I am always visible in Your eyes.
Amen.
Creation
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
JOHN 1:3
Dear God…
The earth You made is kind of on display in my room. Rocks sit on my shelves. Dirt gets tracked in on my shoes. Spiders hide in corners. I love the physical world You created. Being outside is one of my favorite things—and that’s where I spend my best days.
God, help me to remember that You are even more awesome than the earth You created. Show me Your presence—Your strength and power as well as Your comfort and quiet. Help me to realize that You—the One who made stones, oceans, and trees—You live in my heart and in my life. Because the only thing more awesome than creation is the One who created it.
Amen.
Seek
Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.
1 CHRONICLES 16:11
Dear God…
Half the fun of hide-and-seek is in the seeking—counting slowly, listening for clues, thinking of new hiding spots. Then the reward—the aha moment of surprise, the thrill when the seeker finds the one he’s looking for.
Jesus, please make me a lifetime seeker of You. Help me to always be discovering new things about You and deepening my walk with You. May I seek out everything there is to know about You—how You lived and interacted with others when You walked here on Earth, how You handled people and situations and problems. Connect with me and grow my faith and make our relationship strong. If I seek You, You promise to find me, which means we both win.
Amen.
Learn
Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.
PROVERBS 1:5
Dear God…
When I think of learning important lessons, I tend to think of school subjects like English and science and history. And while I need to do my best in school and actually learn things (like memorizing math facts—and remembering them!), it’s even more important that I learn what You have to teach me.
I need to learn what it means to serve others. I need to learn what it means to pray. I need to learn what it means to follow Your will. And I need to learn what it means to worship You and give You praise. My spiritual education is the most important education of all. And there is no greater teacher than You, God. I am so grateful for everything I can learn from You.
Amen.
Real
Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
1 JOHN 3:18
Dear God…
Sometimes I hear prayers I don’t understand. The people in church use a lot of big words—and I have no idea what they’re talking about! Then I get freaked out because I assume that’s the way I’m supposed to pray. And I have no clue how to do that!
But then I remember that Your only expectation from me is that I keep my prayers real. That I use my real words. That I talk to You about my real life. That I share with You my real feelings and fears. I don’t need to use big words. I just need to keep myself truthful in Your presence. I don’t need to use the right vocabulary; I just need to have the right spirit. Thank You that I can come to You just as I am, Lord.
Amen.
Trust
I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.
PSALM 13:5
