About this ebook

On a cold winter's night in 1778, two patriot soldiers recall their first sensual encounter and ponder their future together with the women they love.

Winter's icy weather  is not the only chill to descend upon New York's Fort Revolution in January of 1778. Discontent hangs heavy in the air between Lieutenant Patrick Hamilton and Captain Samuel Taylor during an evening's respite from America's war for independence.

Reminiscing brings a realization of their emotional and physical connection to each other. Will memories be enough to rouse reconciliation?

Winter Interlude: An American Revolutionary Novelette (American Revolutionary Tales Book 2) is a prequel and interquel companion story to The General's Wife: An American Revolutionary Tale, delving into the relationship between Captain Samuel Taylor and Lieutenant Patrick Hamilton. Much of the action of Winter Interlude takes place in the gap between Chapter Twenty-Three and Chapter Twenty-Four of The General's Wife.

This novelette edition includes a bonus story set during the American Revolution, "On the Eighteenth of January, '78; or, A Night At Valley Forge":
During the American Revolution's infamous winter of '77-'78 at Valley Forge, two soldiers fanboy over their charismatic leader, General George Washington.

Preface: An Infamous Winter Inspires Two Stories

In 2013, I had just finished and released the new edition of The General’s Wife: An American Revolutionary Tale and was starting to think about a sequel involving the secondary hero First Lieutenant Patrick Hamilton. But before the sequel would be released, I thought I should release a shorter story, an interlude at Fort Revolution featuring Captain Samuel Taylor—Sam—and Pat, to set up an emotional backstory to the sequel.

This interlude would take place between Chapter Twenty-Three and Chapter Twenty-Four of The General’s Wife, where there’s a chronological gap from November 1777 to May 1778. This time period just happened to include the infamous winter of 1777-1778 during which American soldiers encamped at Valley Forge suffered shortages and hardships.

Before embarking upon my Sam and Pat story, I saw a call for submissions for an American Revolution erotica anthology. Who better than I could write such a thing? I write erotica, and I had just done all that research… So I decided to write a story. Actually, a colleague and I egged each other on to write American Revolution erotica shorts.

The exercise was an interesting detour from writing my Sam and Pat story. I do not know for the life of me where the story I eventually wrote came from. It just happened. I think it was one of the most creative writing moments in my entire life.

The resulting story, On the Eighteenth of January, ’78; or, A Night at Valley Forge, was described by my colleague as super kinky and bizarre and queer. I think I squealed in delight at that response. When I try to describe the story I’m sort of at a loss. The best I can do is to say it’s a male/male George Washington cross-dressing role play historical erotica short.

On the Eighteenth of January was eventually published in the Naughty Literati winter anthology Naughty List. My Sam and Pat story, Winter Interlude, was released the following winter in the Naughty Chances anthology. I’ve always intended for the two stories to be published alongside each other as they take place during the same winter of 1777-1778. And here they are, together at last.

    Chapter One

Fort Revolution, State of New York, mid-January 1778

From the embrace of a wingback, First Lieutenant Patrick Hamilton stretched out his legs, his shoes scraping along the mud-stained planks of the pine floor in the captain’s quarters. He took a draw from his pipe, savoring the spicy warmth briefly before his exhalation swirled and mingled with the cold night air.

The dim glow of an oil lamp framed his view of Captain Samuel Taylor. Sam rocked on his heels in front of the hearth, his hands behind his back, wiggling his fingers into the heat.

A splendid view—when Pat dared to snatch a glance.

Unspoken words clung to the clouds of dissipating smoke rings and puffs from too-wet wood in the fire. Lamplight and shadows played across Sam’s face, his muscles tense under his pale and unshaven skin.
